LexTALE-Korean의 개발과 타당성 검증: 효율적인 한국어 어휘 평가 도구
손옥현,유수린,윤홍옥 한국언어정보학회 2022 언어와 정보 Vol.26 No.2
This study aimed to develop the Korean-version LexTALE and examine its effectiveness in estimating Korean learners’ proficiency. 41 advanced and intermediate Korean learners participated in a web-based lexical decision task in which 120 Korean words and nonwords were tested. They also took part in a reading comprehension task and a cloze task. The results from a series of logistic mixed-effect models revealed that first, the LexTALE-Kr accuracy significantly differed between language groups in a way that Korean natives obtained higher scores than Korean learners, and advanced Korean learners gained higher scores than intermediate Korean learners. Second, the effect of lexical frequency on lexical decision accuracy was significant, and its effect was the biggest in advanced Korean learners. Third, the scores obtained from the reading and cloze tasks significantly accounted for the accuracy variances of Korean learners. Taken together, our results supported the claim that the simple and low-cost online test evaluating learners’ lexical knowledge is adequate to estimate the goodness of learners’ proficiency as much as complex and high-cost comprehensive examinations like TOPIK.

Son, Okhyun & Kim, Youngjoo. 2009. A Study on the connective endings functioning as final endings in Korean spoken language. Korean Semantics, 28. This study aims to analyze the usage of connective endings functioning as final endings in Korean spoken language in order to apply the results in the field of Korean language education. Some connective endings are used as final endings at the end of sentences especially in spoken language. The study made a list of connective endings functioning as final endings according to the condition, semantic reflection, and linguistic environments, and examined their frequency in drama scripts and the spoken language corpus data of 21 Century Sejong project. The data was objectively analyzed in adjacent discourse pairs depending upon variables such as gender, age, and close relationship between interlocutors. In addition, listening comprehension of Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) was examined to see how the usage of connective endings is structured. This study investigated the usage of connective endings functioning as final endings in the perspective of language pedagogy in order to contribute to design Korean textbooks and teaching materials to enhance communicative competence of Korean language learners.

This study investigates the validity of lexical decision times as a measure for estimating learners’ language proficiency. Using LexTALE-Kr (Son et al., 2022), a Korean vocabulary assessment tool, we examined the extent to which lexical decision times can distinguish between Korean learners and native Korean speakers, and how these times relate to accuracy rates. Our findings indicate that lexical decision times are a robust measure of learners’ Korean ability. First, lexical decision times effectively differentiate Korean learners from native speakers, as well as intermediate-level learners from advanced-level learners. Second, lexical decision times decreased linearly as lexical frequency increased, with higher-frequency words being processed more rapidly. This correlation was stronger in the learner groups compared to the native group. Finally, a negative correlation emerged between lexical decision times and accuracy rates, with higher accuracy rates associated with shorter decision times. Overall, our results support the use of lexical decision times as a valid measure for assessing learners’ linguistic proficiency.

As the government of Korea and many companies actively advance into Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, the economic and cultural ramifications of this exchange create a number of challenges. One of the main challenges is the necessity for professional native interpreters for communication between them. This trend has to be reflected in Korean education and we have to be concerned about interpretation education as well as finding an effective way of providing interpretation education to those who plan to enter this field. It is necessary to have not only speaking and listening ability but also good interpretation skills. Therefore, interpretation education has to be focused on the improvement of interpretation skills of students. For this, it is necessary to have a separate curriculum, targeted teaching methods, and evaluation methods. Using this theoretical approach, we researched an example for interpretation education which is being taught in Vietnam. Using Vietnam as an example, in how the theory of interpretation education is applied in the field, we can develop a viable system in Korean education. (Seoul National University․Kyunghee University)
