Discussions on Liberal Arts education in universities are increasing, and related institutions are emerging, but confusion still exists about the basic concepts of Liberal Arts education. The most problematic of these is the misunderstanding and mixing of the English words “liberal” and “general” as they relate to education. The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of the basic concept of Liberal Arts education by tracking the historical changes of liberal education and general education, which are the roots of the Korean Liberal Arts education system. To this end, data mining and visualization is performed through the Google Ngram Viewer. The Google Ngram Viewer is a tool used to search for the frequency of the use of certain words in 8 million Google Books published between 1800 and 2012. During this period, the data within the humanities illustrated the situation of 1915, when “General” education surpassed the use of Liberal Education, and around 1950, when the frequency of the use of General Education peaked. The results of the data analysis are interpreted by a humanistic imagination as follows: Liberal education is a term used to refer to educational activities that are distinguished from professional or technical education, that is, education in which the human mind is freely active, which is relatively far from serving a socially useful purpose. In contrast, in the early 20th century, General education was not used with the same meaning as it is currently used in Liberal Arts education. Rather, it was widely used in a more practical sense, encompassing agriculture, medicine, and vocational education, as well as in the sense of providing guidance in the areas of social services and club activities. The Harvard Liberal Education Reform Report of the 1950s aggravated conceptual confusion by putting forward the value of Liberal Education within the context of the banner of General Education. To be sure, there is still confusion between the two concepts in the United States to this day. This study is clearly an experiment and a new challenge. When human-social-scientific imagination is added to the analysis and visualization work based on information science, big data-based data mining techniques will also give rise to a new wind in Liberal Arts education research. This method will also help to explain the conceptual confusion surrounding the core concepts of Liberal Arts education, such as basic education and character education. 대학에서 교양교육에 대한 논의가 활발해지고 관련 기관이 생겨나고 있지만 교양교육 기본개념에 대한혼란은 여전히 남아 있다. 이 가운데 가장 문제가 되는 것은 영어의 Liberal Education과 General Education에대한 몰이해와 혼용이다. 본 연구의 목적은 우리말 교양교육의 어원이 되는 Liberal Education과 General Education의 역사적 변천을 추적하여 교양교육 기본개념의 의미를 명료화하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 구글 엔그램 뷰어를 통한 데이터마이닝과 시각화 작업을 수행한다. 구글 엔그램 뷰어는1800년부터 2012년까지 출간된 구글 북스 800만 권에서 특정 단어의 사용빈도를 조회하는 도구이다. 이 시기 중에서 General Education이 Liberal Education의 활용 빈도를 추월한 1915년과 General Education 의 활용 빈도가 정점을 보인 1950년 전후 상황 데이터를 인문학적으로 해명하였다. 데이터 분석 결과를 인문학적으로 해석하면 다음과 같다. Liberal Education은 전문교육 혹은 기술교육과는 구별되는 교육활동, 즉 사회적 유용성과는 비교적 거리가 먼 인간의 마음이 자유롭게 활동하는상태에서 이루어지는 교육을 지칭할 때 쓰이는 용어이다. 이와는 달리 20세기 초반 General Education은현재의 교양교육의 의미로 사용되지 않았다. 오히려 농학, 의학, 직업교육은 물론 사회봉사, 동아리활동지도를 포괄하는 실용적 의미로 널리 쓰였다. 1950년대 하버드 교양교육 개혁 보고서는 General Education의 기치를 내걸면서도 내용 면에서는 Liberal Education에서 추구하는 가치를 전면에 내세움으로써 개념상의 혼란을 가중시켰다. 미국 내에서 두 개념 사이의 혼란은 여전히 남아 있다. 본 연구는 분명 하나의 실험이자 새로운 도전이다. 정보과학 기반의 분석 및 시각화 작업에 더해인문학이나 사회과학적 상상력이 더해질 때 빅데이터 기반 데이터마이닝 기법은 교양교육 연구에도새로운 바람을 일으킬 것이다. 이 방법은 교양교육의 핵심개념인 기초교육, 인성교육을 둘러싼 개념상의혼란을 해명하는 데도 도움을 줄 것이다.

대학 인성교육으로서 ‘삶의 치유(Lebenstherapie) 프로그램’ 개발과 적용가능성 탐색

The purpose of this study was to develop a ‘Lebenstherapie’ as students healing program and to apply this program to university character education. In order to attain the goal it was supposed to use two psychological inventories such as the MBI and the KSCL 95. We also developed a students healing program ‘Lebenstherapie’ based on the holistic education, the german ‘Bildungstheory’ and the transpersonal psychology. This program can be conducted to heal stressed and burnout students. We suggested some considerations involved in the application of the healing program. Firstly the time and place of healing students should be considered as one of the most decisive factors. Secondly the teamwork as well as good planning may have a positive effect on the success of the program. Thirdly in making the healing program the physical and emotional components of the program need to be prioritized than the cognitive one. Because these students need help for enhancing their mental health through physical strengthening and learning the value of empathy. This program may help stressed and burnout students restore their physical and mental health and eventually contribute to the improvement of the quality of their lives. 본 연구의 목적은 대학생 삶의 치유(Lebenstherapie) 프로그램을 개발하고 대학의 인성교육에 이 프로그램을 적용하기 위한 가능성을 찾는 데 있다. 이를 위해서 문헌연구로 대학생 소진 현상과 관련 심리검사도구인 MBI와 KSCL95를 검토한 후 전인교육론과 인간도야이론을 기반으로 대학생 치유프로그램을 개발하였다. 이 프로그램은 대학생활에서 스트레스를 받고 소진된 학생들을 치유하기 위해 마련된 것이다. 치유프로그램 적용 시 고려할 사항은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프로그램 적용의 시기와 장소는 최우선적으로 고려되어야 한다. 둘째, 잘 짜여진 운영진의 팀워크는 프로그램의 성공에 결정적이다. 셋째, 치유프로그램 구성 시 인지적 요소보다 신체적·정서적 요소를 우선시할 필요가 있다. 그 이유는 소진 대학생들이 신체적 강화를 통해 자신의 정신 건강을 향상시키고, 공감의 가치를 배울 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서 제안한 프로그램은 궁극적으로 스트레스를 받고 소진된 학생들이 신체적· 정신적 건강을 회복하여 자신의 삶의 질을 향상시키는 데 도움을 줄 것이다.
