The synthetic jet is considered as an effective control device for drag reduction in two-dimensional bluff bodies such as airfoils and circular cylinders. To investigate the effect of the synthetic jet on the flow over a sphere as a representative three-dimensional bluff body, we perform active control of flow over a sphere using a synthetic jet at a subcritical Reynolds number (Re=10,000) based on free-stream velocity and sphere diameter. The forcing frequencies of synthetic jet are 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 based on the sphere diameter and freestream velocity. The synthetic jet issued from the sphere surface near the separation point at ?*=1.0 significantly changes the near wake of the sphere and subsequently reduces the drag.
