        Monitoring Local Populations and Breeding Migration Patterns of the Gold-spotted Pond Frog, Rana chosenica

        We monitored gold-spotted pond frog (Rana chosenica ) populations near the Korea NationalUniversity of Education in Chungbuk, Korea, from 19 May to 8 August, 2006 to examine the spatial distribution of populations in local areas and to investigate patterns of migration of adult gold-spotted pond frogs from terrestrial hibernation sites to breeding sites, We captured individuals from the largest population using a drift fence with 22 pitfall traps surrounding the breeding site. A total of 2 individuals (19 males and 3 females) were eeding migration was detected, but the onset of the breeding migration may correspond with increased humidity. Male body weights were negatively correlated with sampling dates. Seven of 22 individuals were captured at the 4th pitfall trap, which was placed between two culverts. The capture rate per pitfall trap was higher in traps close to the rice field banks (1.44, traps 1∼9) than in traps facing hilly land (0.33, traps 13∼18). Comparative data from the Korean frog (Rana coreana ), a sympatric species in the study area, were also collected and compared with those of the gold-spotted pond frog.

        Estimating Dection Probabilities and Site Occupancy Rates of three Anuran Species Using Call Surveys in Haenam Gun, Korea

        We investigated the distribution of three anuran species, Three-striped pond frogs (Rananigromaculata), Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana ), and Narow-mouthed toads (Kaloula borealis), in an administrativeveyors were assigned to each 2 2 km2survey plot. Call surveys on whether the species are present or notwere conducted for 5 minutes between 30 minutes after sunset and the midnight on rice fields and ponds from10 April to 28 August in 2005. Depending on species, call surveys were carried out at seven to 28 plots withaverage 8.4 to 10.7 visits per the plot. We calculated the detection probabilities and occupancy rates of the threespecies using four models with three covariates: temperature, humidity, and the amount of water at the habitat.The model average detection probabilities of thre anuran species of R. nigromaculata, R. catesbeiana,and K.borealis were 0.53, 0.74, and 0.41 respectively, and the site occupancy rates of them were 0.93, 0.94, and 0.86respectively. Our results indicate thatR. nigromaculata, R. catesbeiana,and K. borealisare common in HaenamGun.

        Abundance and Breeding Migration of the Asian Toad (Bufo gargarizans)

        We monitored a breeding population of the Asian toad (Bufo gargarizans), in the Wonheunge pond at Sannamdong, Chungju, from 5 March to 11 April, 2006 and 14 February to 31 March, 2007 to investigate their movement patterns, breeding population sizes, and physical characteristics. Terrestrial migration to the pond started on 5 March in 2006 and 14 February in 2007. We captured a total of 266 immigrating individuals (213 males, 53 females) in 2006 and 307 (222 males, 85 females) in 2007, and found 50 adults apparently killed by motor vehicles while migrating to the pond in 2007. Emigration from the pond to terrestrial sites started on 15 March 2006 and 5 March 2007. We captured a total of 245 emigrating toads (181 males, 65 females) in 2006 and 99 (92 males, 7 females) in 2007. An additional 10 emigrating adults were found dead on the road. During both the immigration and emigration periods, two peaks in capture frequency appeared for each sex in each breeding season. The immigration peaks corresponded with higher temperatures, while the emigration peaks corresponded with high humidity. Migrating Asian toads showed sexual size dimorphism and a malebiased sex ratio. Body weights and SVL (snout-vent length) of immigrating and emigrating individuals were negatively related with migration dates.

      • 노랑턱멧새(Emberiza elegans)의 Song에 의한 종 인식

        본 연구는 1992년 3월에서 1993년 5월까지 충북 청원군 강내면 다락리 야산에 서식하는 노랑턱멧새(Emberizo elegans) 집단을 대상으로 이루어졌다. 종 인식을 위한 의미있는 song 특징을 알아보기 위해 같은 과(요)에 속하는 붉은뺨멧새(Emberizo fucata)와 쑥새(Emberiza rustsca)의 'stereotyped song'을 분석하였다 또한 세력권을 형성한 5개체를 대상으로 song에 기초한 playback 실험을 통하여 종 인식 능력을 알아보았다. 스피커에 가장 가까이 날라온 거리와 이 거리에서 머문 시간을 측정한 결과 붉은뺨멧새의 song에는 반응이 없었으나 쑥새의 song에는 의미있는 반응을 보였다. 따라서 노랑턱멧새와 두 종에 대한 song 특징의 분석을 토대로 종간 인식의 가능성에 대하여 논의하였다.

        Entering and Exiting Routes of Hynobius leechii to a Breeding Site and Staying Time within Site

        To study entering and exiting routes of male and female Hynobius leechii to a breeding site andstaying time of them within the breeding site, we monitored a breeding population located in the research forests of Kangwon National University. The breeding site was surrounded by a drift fence associated with nine pitfall males arrived earlier at the breeding pond than females did. The operational sex ratio (OSR), defined as the ratio of males to females which are ready to mate, over a breeding season was female-biased as 0.67 male vs 1 female (57 males vs 87 females), but daily OSRs, OSR in a particular day, within the breeding pond were male-biased with 1.36~7.5 male vs 1 female in six days out of seven investigated days. While breeding males stayed in the breeding pond for about 11 days, breeding females left the pond as soon as they completed oviposition. However, the females stayed at terrestrial areas near the pond for about seven days before completely leaving the breeding site. Entering and exiting routes to the breeding site were different between males and females, and betwen ovulated and oviposited females. Both males and females athe site. Males stayed longer within the breeding site lost more body weight.

        먹이 밀도와 수심에 따른 황새(Ciconia boyciana)의 섭식 행동에 대한 사례연구

        멸종위기종 황새의 야생 방사를 위한 먹이 서식지 조성 시 필요한 정보를 제공하고 야생 황새의 먹이 서식지 보호와 보존을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 연구를 시작하였다. 이를 위하여 충북 청원군 미원면 화원리에 있는 산지형 습지 일부에 울타리를 치고 황새 암수의 한쪽 날개의 첫째날개깃 일부를 잘라 방사하여, 6월 20일부터 8월 16일까지 서식지 먹이 밀도와 수심 변화에 따른 서식지 이용률 및 섭식행동 특성을 파악하였다. 황새는 밀도가 높은 서식지에서 오랫동안 머물며 섭식시도와 섭식량을 증가시켰으며 수심에 따라 암컷은 수심이 얕은 서식지에서 그리고 수컷은 중간 깊이의 서식지에서 섭식시간과 섭식량을 증가시켰다. 그러나 섭식효율성은 밀도와 수심과 관련없이 의미있는 차이가 없었다. 단지 암수 간의 섭식효율성이 밀도에 따라 그리고 수심이 다른 서식지에서 섭식행동에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구를 통하여 반자연적 환경에 방사된 황새가 먹이 밀도에 따라 섭식 지역을 선택할 수 있음을 보여주었고 섭식효율성은 개체에 따라 혹은 섭식 방법에 따라 다르게 나타날 수 있음을 보여주었다. The Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) is an endangered species in Korea as well as in the world. In order to provide information on foraging habitats for releasing storks to the wild, we studied the foraging behavior of the species according to different food densities and water levels. We released two individuals, male and female, after enclosing a study site with a fence and cutting out a part of two or three primary feathers. Research was conducted from 20 June to 16 August 2008 at Whawon-ri, Mewon-myung, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. We investigated habitat patch usage, foraging efficiency, and foraging methods of the feeding individuals in the different food densities and water levels. The storks invested more for foraging time and trials, and they captured more food in a habitat of high food density than others. The female invested more time and captured food most in a habitat of lowest water depth while the male in a habitat of middle water depth. However, foraging efficiency did not differ significantly among habitats of food density and water depth, and only differed between male and female by ways of foraging method. From this study we suggest that the storks select foraging habitats and foraging methods under different conditions of food density and water depth.

        청원군에 소재한 금개구리(Rana plancyi chosenica) 개체군의 번식동태

        환경부지정 멸종위기 II급 종인 금개구리(Rana plancyi chosenica)의 번식생태를 연구하기 위하여 충북 청원군 강내면에 위치하는 묵논형 습지에 있는 금개구리 개체군을 2007년 4월부터 2008년 11월까지 총 207일에 걸쳐서, 모음담장과 주머니함정을 설치하여 모니터링을 실시하였다. 금개구리들은 봄철 4월 20일부터 6월 13일 사이에 번식지로 이동하였으며, 가을철 동면지 이동은 9월 21일부터 11월 16일 사이에 일어났다. 서식지 내·외로의 이동은 2007년과 가을 이동과 2008년 봄 이동 시 공히 강수와 높은 양의 상관을 보였지만, 기온, 수온, 상대습도와는 유의미한 상관관계를 보이지 않았다. 금개구리들은 이동 시 주로 논의 언덕이나 묵논과 연결된 이동경로를 다른 경로보다 선호하여 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 번식지 내·외로의 이동순서와 개체의 신체 요소와는 2007년 봄에는 번식지 내·외로의 이동순서와 개체의 몸길이(snout-vent length)와 양의 상관을 보였으며, 이동순서와 몸무게와는 2008년 봄을 제외한 모든 경우에 양의 상관을 보여, 작은 개체들이 먼저 출현하고 먼저 동면지로 이주하는 경향을 보였다. 금개구리 암컷은 수컷에 비하여 유의미하게 큰 것으로 확인되었으며, 가을철 동면지 이주 시 20 mm SVL 크기 이하의 작은 개체들의 수가 2007년, 2008년 공히 소폭 증가하여, 개체군 내에 성공적인 번식이 일어나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 연구결과는 금개구리 야외 개체군을 보존하는 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다. To study reproductive dynamics of a Gold-spotted pond frog (Rana chosenica) population located at Gangnae, Cheongwon, Chungbuk, Korea, we monitored the population over 207 days between April 17th 2007 and December 18th 2008 using a drift fence accompanied with 20 pitfall traps. The population was located in an agricultural wetland, compromising three small ponds. Gold-spotted pond frogs immigrated into the wetland between April 16th and June 17th and emigrated from the wetland between September 21st and November 12th. Precipitation showed a positive correlation with the number of migrated frogs in Autumn 2007 and Spring 2008, but other environmental factors such as air and water temperatures and relative humidity did not show any significant relationships. In general, small frogs first migrated into and from the wetland, but the trend was not strong. Female gold-spotted pond frogs were bigger than males. During the autumn migration, small frogs of which snout-vent length was smaller than 20 mm were found, indicating that successful breeding occurred in the population. Our results could be useful to conserve this endangered species in Korea.
