With an increasing interest and demand forbiotechnology crops in agriculture worldwide, geneticallymodified (GM) breeding stacks produced by conventionalbreeding of previously approved GM single events remainpopular for farmers in GM crop cultivation countries. However, regulations on stacks vary in each country. Currently, Korea requires approval for all breeding stacksintended for cultivation. To determine whether the stack issubject to a full safety assessment as a new GM crop,molecular characterization, protein expression, compositionanalysis, and agronomic characterization data arerequired. Korea’s regulatory policy on stacks has notadopted the high-covers-low concept; therefore, subcombinationsof already approved higher combination eventsare subject to breeding stack review if any subcombinationwas purposefully bred for cultivation use. This review willhelp promote the efficient management of GM breedingstacks in Korea in the future.
16S rRNA와 16S-23S rRNA Gene Sequence Analysis을 이용한 물김치와 동치미 유산균의 분리 동정

This study was carried out to identify lactic acid bacteria in Mul-Kimchi and Dongchimi using by 16S rRNA and 16S-23S gene sequence analysis. Diluted Mul-Kimchi and Dongchimi soup were plated on the MRS agar media and colonies obtained were used for 16S rRNA and 16S-23S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Genomic DNAs were extracted from the isolated lactic acid bacteria and used as a template for PCR amplification. Universal primer sets based on the 16S rRNA and 16S-23S intergenic spacer region genes were used for amplification. From the sequencing of PCR products, Weissella kimchii, Weissella cibaria, Leuconostoc lactis, Leuconostoc citreum and Leuconostoc garlicum were identified.
한국어 쓰기 피드백에 대한 학습자와 교사의 인식 및 선호 차이에 관한 연구

While many studies have examined the efficacy of written corrective feedback provided by teachers, few studies have investigated students' and teachers' perceptions and preferences regarding teacher feedback. This study investigates and compares student and teacher beliefs on teacher feedback. A total of 27 students and 25 teachers participated in this study, and their perceptions and preferences regarding teacher feedback were measured by a questionnaire. Results show that both students and teachers have strong beliefs on teacher feedback. However, some discrepancies were found: (1) students preferred direct metalinguistic feedback, while teachers preferred direct feedback; and (2) students seemed to have consistent beliefs regarding the type of feedback they prefer, but teachers were not very consistent. Suggestions for future research were made.
Anti-oxidant and Hepatoprotective Effect of White Ginsengs in H2O2-Treated HepG2 Cells

The antioxidant activity of white ginseng was not recorded in Korea Functional Food Code, while its activity of red ginsengs was recorded. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and hepato protective effect of different ginsengs in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells. White and red ginseng were prepared from longitudinal section of the same fresh ginseng (4-year old). The whole parts of white and red ginsengs were separately extracted with 70% ethanol and distilled water respectively, at 70 oC to obtain therapeutic ginseng extracts namely, WDH (distilled water extract of white ginseng), WEH (70% ethanol extract of white ginseng), RDH (distilled water extract of red ginseng) and REH (70% ethanol extract of red ginseng). In this work, we have investigated the DPPH, hydroxyl radical, Fe2+-chelating activity, intracellular ROS scavenging capacity and lipid peroxidation of different ginsengs. All these extracts showed a dose dependent free-radical scavenging capacity and a ROS generation as well as lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced by treatment with bioactive extracts of white ginsengs (WDH) than red ginsengs. Additionally, white ginseng extracts (WDH) has dramatically increased intracellular antioxidant enzyme activities like superoxide dismutase and catalase in H2O2-treated HepG2 cells. All these results explain that administration of white ginseng is useful as herbal medicine than red ginseng for chemoprevention of liver damage.
학문 목적을 위한 한국어와 영어의 연구 경향 비교 분석

What are the key research trends in KAP and EAP? With this research question in mind, this article aims to review and compare the research trends in the two disciplines. In doing so, this article performs a qualitative research synthesis of the relevant studies in major domestic journals (e.g., Bilingual Research, Journal of Korean Language Education, Korean Journal of Applied Linguistics) from 2002 to 2011. A total number of 83 research articles in KAP, published during this period, were classified and coded according to an analytic framework in terms of (1) research scope, (2) objects of research, (3) research topics, and (4) research methods. The KAP results were compared with the EAP results based on an analysis of a total number of 166 research articles in EAP published during the same period. The results show that the research trends in KAP and EAP have similarities in some respects including the research scope and research topics addressed. Suggestions for future research were made.
