      • Shepard 와 Cowboy

Vol.3 No.-

(Abstract)Sam Shepard is interested in cowboys, and he has written about cowboys in many of his plays. Cowboys in his plays are idealized figures. They are sometimes resistant to evils of society Sometimes they try to solve problems which the society has in which the cowboys fond themselves. They do not always succeed, but when they succeed, they become solvers of problems or the savers of the world. This paper discusses three types of cowboys in Shepard's three plays.

Vol.6 No.-

Quite a few Shepard plays have all male casts. In plays with mixed casts males generally outnumber and overwhelm females. Female characters, on the other hand, are the back ground of the plays, They appear as marginal weak females or powerless mothers. Why Shepard takes such a position about female characters is not certain yet. Shepard is sometimes said to have nostalgia for the 19th century America. His nostalgia is yet to be further studied.

Vol.7 No.-

Comedies written during the fifty years since the restoration of Charles Ⅱ are called either Restoration Comedies or Comedies of Manners. Those are comedies depicting realistically and in a sinister spirit the life of the most dissolute portion of the fashionable society of the city. The hero is ordinarily a man pursuing the pleasures of drink, play, and love, with a complete disregard for the well being of others; and the heroine is a woman whose scruples, if she has any, are based on prudence rather than virtue. In the seventeenth century, three dramatists-Etherege, Wycherley, and Congreve-began to write this kind of plays. At the end of the nineteenth century Oscar Wilde wrote comedies of the sort. This paper discussed Wilde's last play, The Importance of Being Earnest. and found that the play has all the aspects of comedy of manners.

Vol.16 No.1

Edward Albee's The American Dream and Sam Shepard's Buried Child are plays of social criticisms. In the plays, the two playwrights criticize modern American society. To them American society is full of problems. They both attack the American people's wrong ideas and wrong doings. The fact that Grandma in The American Dream calls a crippled young man "the American Dream" tells the whole story. The fact that Dodge's two sons are not sound in body or in mind means the same thing.

Vol.4 No.-

According to the Greek myth Oedipus was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. When they knew of the oracle, those who were concerned tried to escape the curse. However, the oracle came true after all. Sophocles wrote a play (Oedipus the King) based on this myth. After more than 2000 years had passed since Sophocles' play, Freud interpreted this story in his "The Interpretation of Dreams." He said that sons are destined to direct their first sexual impulses toward their mothers, and their first impulses of hatred and violence toward their fathers. The paper analyzed three modern British and American plays in order to find how the Oedipal themes are dealt with in these plays. In Desire Under the Elms, the triangle made up of mother, son and father is modified: mother is not the son's real mother but his step mother. In The Homecoming, the triangle is made up of mother substitute, two sons and their father. In Buried Child, the incest seems to occur between real mother and her real son, but it is not certain whether it really happens or not. It is because of the author's peculiar realistic technique. The writer of this paper argues that these varieties of techniques of modifying the triangle made of the three relatives weaken the impact of Oedipal themes in those plays.

Vol.- No.20

They both write about their country, America. They both criticize the American society of today, but they love their country. They find various problems which America today has. However, they try to find the way to cope with the problems. And they both have found that America can be hopeful again when Americans restore the past of their country.

      • Human Isolation in The Zoo Story

1981 Veritas Vol.- No.2

Vol.8 No.-

The Restoration comedy has another name "comedy of manners." The comedy of manners is a type of drama, which deals mainly with high society manners. It does not simply describe the society, but criticiazes it; it attacks hypocrisy and corruption of the high society. This paper discusses the development of the comedy of manners and analyze two plays of two playwrights of the Restoration period. The writer argues that in Etherege's play there are attacks on the high society and that in Wycherley's attacks on the humanity itself as well as those on the high society are found.
