This study aims to make clear reasons why the movie The Sword With No Name (2009) failed to turn a profit without continuous attention from viewers even though it had attracted huge attention before its release. To do this, we adopted as a methodology the analysis of the narrative structure and mise-en-scene of it. The Sword With No Name (2009) is a movie where a fictionalized romance was added to the well-known story of the Empress Myeongseong, The movie was expected to achieve a box office success in that it drew more than a million viewers during the 11 days after its release. However, it ended with 1.66 million total audiences. By the semoitic analysis of narrative and image, we investigated the failure of the movie which had fascinated public people before its release. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the movie consists of two narratives (i.e. historical and fictional). These two elements were not successfully harmonize with each other in that a fictional narrative was more greatly emphasized compared to a historical one. Second, it did not appeal to the audience because the main characters romance was developed without causal relationship. Finally, excessive camera techniques and mise-en-scene disturbed audience concentration and made the plot flow unnatural. The results show that this movie succeeded in adding the universally empathetic romance to the well-known story and in putting tragic history and beautiful love in separated images and that it failed to harmonize them in itself. In conclusion, harmonizing the fact and a fiction, keeping the main narrative, and composing the relevant picture properly can enhance the perfection of Faction (i.e. a compound word of fact and fiction used ni Korea) movies.
