        Periocular Myxoma in a Dog

        A 1-year-old castrated male Shih-Tzu dog presented with severe orbital swelling involving the right eye. Physical examination identified a painless swelling of the right periocular tissues and protrusion of the third eyelid. Radiographic examination revealed a well-delineated, spherical (3 × 3 cm) soft tissue mass. Ultrasonography confirmed a hypoechoic, multilobular, tubular cystic structure with hyperechoic foci. Fine needle aspiration was conducted and the cytologic impression revealed copious mucus, increased neutrophilic leucocytes, and foamy macrophages. Th tentative diagnosis was zygomatic sialocele, and the lesion was resected through lateral orbitotomy. Surgical exploration identified a multilobular mass adhering to the zygomatic glands. Both the zygomatic gland and the mass were removed. Histological findings were consistent with those of an inflamed myxoma. No postoperative recurrence occurred within 1 year.

        Growth and changes in the biochemical composition of Isochrysis galbana under different light–emitting diode conditions

        The marine microalgae Isochrysis galbana was cultured under various light–emitting diode (LED) light conditions with different wavelengths to examine changes in growth and in amino acid and fatty acid profiles. The culture conditions for the microalgae were Conway medium, salinity of 33 psu, temperature of 24°C, and a 16/8 h light/dark photoperiod. Six light sources, including 5 units of 180W LED lamps (peak wavelength: blue [LB] 470 nm; green [LG] 525 nm; yellow [LY] 595 nm; red [LR] 636 nm; white [LW] 442 nm) and 1 unit of a 175W metal halide (MH) lamp, were used for the experiment. The dry cell weights (gL–1) of I. galbana under different light conditions were in the order of LW>LB≥MH>LR>LG>LY. Levels of essential amino acids were revealed to be significantly higher under LW, LG, and MH than under the other wavelengths (P<0.05). The fatty acid, unsaturated fatty acid, and DHA contents of I. galbana were higher under MH, LW, and LG. In addition, the carotenoid content was higher under MH, LW, and LG than under the other wavelengths (P<0.05). The fucoxanthin content was highest under MH (0.28%) and lowest under LY (0.2%), and it was 0.26% under LW and LG. The results indicate that the combined use of LW and LG is effective when using LED lamps for I. galbana cultivation.

        Lobeglitazone: A Novel Thiazolidinedione for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

        Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Among available oral antidiabetic agents, only the thiazolidinediones (TZDs) primarily target insulin resistance. TZDs improve insulin sensitivity by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ. Rosiglitazone and pioglitazone have been used widely for T2DM treatment due to their potent glycemic efficacy and low risk of hypoglycemia. However, their use has decreased because of side effects and safety issues, such as cardiovascular concerns and bladder cancer. Lobeglitazone (Chong Kun Dang Pharmaceutical Corporation), a novel TZD, was developed to meet the demands for an effective and safe TZD. Lobeglitazone shows similar glycemic efficacy to pioglitazone, with a lower effective dose, and favorable safety results. It also showed pleiotropic effects in preclinical and clinical studies. In this article, we summarize the pharmacologic, pharmacokinetic, and clinical characteristics of lobeglitazone.

        Use of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitors and Severe COVID-19 Outcomes in Patients with Hypertension: A Nationwide Cohort Study

        Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 facilitates the entry of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 into the human body. We investigated the association of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitor use with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes in hypertensive patients. Methods: We identified hypertensive patients with confirmed COVID-19 from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service from inception to May 15, 2020. The primary outcome was the composite of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and death from COVID-19. The individual components were evaluated as secondary outcomes. Results: Of 1,374 hypertensive patients with COVID-19, 1,076 (78.3%) and 298 (21.7%) were users and never-users of RAAS inhibitors, respectively. The RAAS inhibitor users were not associated with the risk of the primary outcome (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46 to 1.10). The risk of ICU admission was significantly lower in the users than the never-users (aOR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.84). The RAAS inhibitors were beneficial only in ICU admissions that did not require IMV (aOR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.14 to 0.58). The risk of death from COVID-19 was comparable between the groups (aOR, 1.09; 95% CI, 0.64 to 1.85). We could not evaluate the risks of CRRT and ECMO owing to the small number of events. Conclusion: RAAS inhibitor use was not associated with the composite of severe outcomes in the hypertensive patients with COVID- 19 but significantly lowered the risk of ICU admission, particularly in patients who did not require IMV.

        주요 근해어업의 온실가스 배출량 정량적 분석

        The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue from the Paris Climate Change Accord in 2015. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 4.8% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries rarely carried out consistently. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is necessary as a first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major offshore fisheries such as offshore gillnet fishery, offshore longline fishery, offshore jigging fishery and anchovy drag net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emissions from the fisheries using the Life Cycle Assessment method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for the LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas as well.         식중독 유발 세균의 증식에 미치는 느릅나무 뿌리껍질 추출물의 영향

        This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, Ulmus davidiana var. japonica was extracted with methanol at room temperature and the fractionation of the methanol extracts was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica extracts was determined by using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The methanol extracts of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli. Finally, the growth inhibition curves were determined by using methanol extracts of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhimurium. The methanol extract of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica had strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. At this concentration, the growth of Salmonella typhimurium was retarded more than 48 hours and up to 12 hours for Staphylococcus epidermidis. In conclusion, the methanol extracts of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica inhibit efficiently Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhimurium.

        Effects of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors on Hyperglycemia and Blood Cyclosporine Levels in Renal Transplant Patients with Diabetes: A Pilot Study

        Background: The use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors is increasing among renal transplant patients with diabetes. However, the glucose-lowering efficacies of various DPP-4 inhibitors and their effects on blood cyclosporine levels have not been fully investigated. We compared the glucose-lowering efficacies of DPP 4 inhibitors and evaluate their effects on the blood levels of cyclosporine in renal transplant recipients with diabetes. Methods: Sixty-five renal allograft recipients who received treatment with DPP-4 inhibitors (vildagliptin, sitagliptin, or lina gliptin) following kidney transplant were enrolled. The glucose-lowering efficacies of the DPP-4 inhibitors were compared ac cording to the changes in the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels after 3 months of treatment. Changes in the trough levels of the cy closporine were also assessed 2 months after treatment with each DPP-4 inhibitor. Results: HbA1c significantly decreased in the linagliptin group in comparison with other DPP-4 inhibitors (vildagliptin –0.38%± 1.03%, sitagliptin –0.53%± 0.95%, and linagliptin –1.40± 1.34; P= 0.016). Cyclosporine trough levels were signifi cantly increased in the sitagliptin group compared with vildagliptin group (30.62± 81.70 ng/mL vs. –24.22± 53.54 ng/mL, P= 0.036). Cyclosporine trough levels were minimally changed in patients with linagliptin. Conclusion: Linagliptin demonstrates superior glucose-lowering efficacy and minimal effect on cyclosporine trough levels in comparison with other DPP-4 inhibitors in kidney transplant patients with diabetes.
