This is a case of leukemia which was negative for peroxidase and PAS stain. However the perpheral blood smear showed l%. of hand-mirror ce1ls, bone marrow smear revealed markedly increased blast form leukocytes with the features of hand-mirror, teardrop and tadpole appearances in 50% of them. Based on the above findings, hand-mirror cell leukemia could be diagnosed.

A total of 61 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from various clinical specimens and 5 strains from nose cultures of healthy carriers were compared for relative surface hydrophobicity in the salt aggregation test (SAT). Fifty-two strains (85%) of clinical isolates showed cell clumping in saline or in 0.002 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.8); these were defined as autoaggregating strains. But 5 strains of nose cultures of healthy carriers were not autoaggregating strains and not aggregated in ammonium sulfate buffer of high molarity (1.5 M ammonium sulfate [final concentration]). Cells did not differ in surface hydrophobicity after growth on nutrient agar supplemented with 2% glucose and blood agar. But the SAT value was increased most strains after growth in liquid medium and was more increased when grown in brain heart infusion than nutrient broth. Cells grown in the inedium supplemented with 2% glucose were more hydrophobic than without glucose. Heating washed cell suspensions at 56℃ did not affect the hydrophobicity, whereas heating the cell suspensions at 80℃ and the addition of ethylene glycol caused a decline in hydrophobicity. Treating the cell suspensions with proteolytic enzyme trypsin decreased the surface hydrophobicity significantly.

The b-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) values and increase on functional disorder in the ventricle, and are used as an index to diagnose heart failure and predict the prognosis. BNP values is known to be relevant to dyssystole in congestive heart failure. This study aimed to identify correlation between the BNP values and the items that indicate the diastolic function in echocardiography. The research divided 188 patients who went through the BNP test and echocardiography in the hospital into the groups with the BNP values; <100, 100-300, 301-600, 601-900, and >901 pg/mL. As the BNP values increase, there was relevance with the echocardiography items of ejection fraction, size of left atrium, E velocity, A velocity, Deceleration time, E/A ratio, E`, A`, S` and E/E`. In comparison on the groups divided based on the BNP values, E/E` had the highest relevance. The research also categorized 67 patients who diagnosed with heart failure. In comparison on the groups of the heart failure patients, the BNP values of the three groups of Grade I: 623.0±459.7 pg/mL, Grade II: 1013.2±1155.1 pg/mL and Grade III: 1693.4±1544.0 pg/mL, respectively (p< 0.01). As the grade was higher, there was a higher relevance with the echocardiography items of ejection fraction, size of left atrium, E velocity, A velocity, Deceleration time, E/A ratio, E`, A`, S` and E/E` (p<0.001). Higher BNP values had a higher relevance with the items that indicate the diastolic function in echocardiography and the BNP values of the Restrictive physiology group were the highest in echocardiography. So the BNP values was thought to be valuable to predict diastolic function of heart.

A case of congenital agenesis of left lung of a 19-years-old female is presented in detail with some review of literature. She had been suffered from mild dyspnea on exertion since early childhood but she was been comfatable unti16 months ago, when frequent upper respiratory infection and dyspnea developed. From 10 days earlier, mild fever was associated and dyspnea on exertion was aggravated. Her past history and family history were not contributary. Physical examination revealed asymmetrical development of both thoracic cage and showed limited respiratory movement of left thorax. There were increased percussion dullness and absent breathing sounds over entire left lung field except left upper lung field. The cardiac dullness was shifted to the left and heart sunds were heard over the 4th ICS X MCL. A roentgenogram of the chest revealed shifting to the left of trachea and mediastinum, homosgenou increased density of left lung, hyperlucency of right lung, and T, hemivertebra, Bronchoscopy showed total absence of left main bronchus. Bronchogram revealed above findings too, but right main bronchus was intact. CT scan revealed agenesis of left lung and herniation of right lung to left hemithorax. Intravenous pyelography showed malrotation of kidney. Pulmonary angioram and cardiac catheterization showed unremarkable findings except total absence of left pulmonary artery.
