        Multifunctional antistress effects of standardized aqueous extracts from Hippophae rhamnoides L.

        This study aims to screen and identify the multi-mechanism antistress effects of an extract of Hippophae rhamnoides L. (HR) leaves on corticosterone (CORT)-induced injury, N-methyl-daspartate (NMDA) receptor and serotonin 6 (5-hydroxytryptamine 6, 5-HT6) receptor activity tests (in vitro), electric foot shock and forced swimming tests (FSTs) (in vivo), and tests for hippocampal CORT and monoamine levels (ex vivo), in search of active principles and underlying mechanisms of action. We confirmed that the water extract of HR (HRW) and various ethanol extracts of HR confer protective effects against CORT-induced impairments in SH-SY5Y cells and antagonistic effects on NMDA receptors and the 5-HT6 receptor by using primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons and a stable 5-HT6 receptor-expressing cell line, respectively. In addition, we confirmed the antistress effects of HRW in an electric foot shock stress model in mice and explored the underlying mechanisms of its action. We observed that HRW treatment significantly reversed the reduction in immobility times and increased climbing times in FSTs induced by electric foot shocks in the stress model. The levels of CORT, dopamine, and norepinephrine were increased, and the level of serotonin in the hippocampus was decreased in the electric foot shock stress model. The standardized HRW effectively restored abnormal CORT and monoamine levels in the hippocampus that were induced by stress. The results of the present study demonstrate that the standardized HRW produces novel multifunctional antistress effects.

        국제적인 환경문제의 대비와 점차적으로 심각해지는 미세먼지 데이터를 실시간으로 수집하기 위한 장치를 레이저 다이오드와 광 검출기를 이용하여 구현하였다. 레이저의 특성 중 산란을 이용한 측정법으로, 산란광의 데이터 제어를 위해 아두이노비, 통신장치로 엑스비 프로 60mW를 사용하고, 전체적인 외형을 CATIA 프로그램으로 설계하고 3D 프린터를 이용하여 제작하였다. 무선 송신된 데이터는 지상부에서 자동으로 분석되어 현재 미세먼지의 위험성을 나타낸다.         Neuroprotective effects of Eriobotrya japonica and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge in in vitro and in vivo models

        We previously reported that Eriobotrya japonica (EJ) improves the cognitive dysfunction caused by amyloid-β(Aβ) peptide injection. Here, we further examined the possible neuroprotective effects and the combinedameliorating effects of EJ and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (SM) in various in vitro and in vivo models. Weconfirmed the combined effects of a mixture of 5% ethanol extract from EJ leaves (EJE) and water extract fromSM roots (SMW) on Aβ1–42-induced toxicity in an in vitro model. Treatment with the mixture (1:1) of EJ andSM (Mix) produced significantly better protection of cells from Aβ-induced toxicity and more stronglysuppressed caspase-3 activity compared to treatment with EJE or SMW alone. Additionally, EJE, SMW, andMix attenuated CoCl2-induced hypoxic damage and corticosterone-induced impairment in SH-SY5Y cells. Toexamine the combined effects of EJE and SMW in in vivo models, behavioral performance in the Morris watermaze was tested two days after injection of Aβ1–42. Administration of Mix provided significantly moreprotection of spatial learning and memory against the impairments induced by Aβ1–42 injection than didadministration of EJE or SMW alone. Additionally, the behavioral deficits that accompanied Aβ-inducedmemory impairment were attenuated to a greater extent by the administration of the mixture. Furthermore,acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and neuronal apoptosis were significantly more inhibited in rats treatedwith Aβ and the mixture than in rats treated with Aβ1–42 alone. Thus, the results of this study indicate that themixture of EJ and SM has combined effects that are neuroprotective against Aβ1–42-induced neuronal toxicity.

        Hepatoprotective Effects of Aqueous Extracts from Leaves of Dendropanax morbifera Leveille against Alcohol-induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats and In vitro Anti-oxidant Effects

        Protective effects of Dendropanax morbifera Lev. leaves (DM) against alcohol-induced liver injury in rat hepatocytes, and rats were investigated. Cell viability increased, and normally elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were reduced in cells treated with water extracts of DM (DMW) before ethanol treatment, compared with cells treated with 200 mM ethanol. DMW administration with ethanol resulted in prevention of ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity due to reductions of serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels. DMW supplementation reduced formation of malondialdehyde, and inhibited reductions of hepatic glutathione, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase levels, compared with rats administered ethanol, and suppressed expression of cytochrome P-450 2E1 that was elevated by ethanol administration. DMW reduced blood ethanol concentrations, and enhanced alcohol dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase activities that are typically decreased by ethanol administration, compared with ethanol-administered rats. DM exerted hepatoprotective effects against alcoholinduced hepatocyte injury.

        Scopolamine으로 유도된 기억력 손상 동물모델에서 비파엽 추출물의 학습 및 기억력 개선 효과

        본 연구는 scopolamine으로 유도한 기억력 및 인지기능 감퇴 동물모델에서 비파엽 추출물의 기억력 및 인지기능 개선효과를 평가하기 위해 수행되어졌다. 6주령의 SD-rat(male)을 총 5개 군으로 분리하였으며, 양성대조군으로 donepezil(1 mg/kg b.w.)을 처리하였다. 15일간 24시간 간격으로 EJE를 50, 200 mg/kg b.w. 농도로 전처리(경구투여) 하였으며, 16일째에 농도별로 EJE 및 양성대조군으로서 donepezil을 투여하고 scopolamine을 복강투여(1 mg/kg b.w.) 하였다. Water maze test와 passive avoidance test를 통해 scopolamine으로 유도한 동물모델에서 EJE의 기억력 및 인지능력 개선 효과를 확인한 결과, scopolamine에 의해 감소된 기억력 및 학습능력이 EJE를 투여함으로써 유의적으로 회복 및 증가한 것을 확인할 수 있었다. Scopolamine에 의해 인지능력과 함께 감소된 운동능력의 평가를 위해 수행한 rotarod test 및 vertical pole test에서는 scopolamine의 투여로 감소된 균형감각, 협응력 그리고 grip strength와 같은 운동능력들이 EJE의 투여로 유의적으로 회복된 것을 확인하였다. 또한 scopolamine에 의해 증가한 AchE의 활성과 감소한 Ach의 함량이 EJE의 투여로 각각 개선되었다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 EJE의 scopolamine으로 유도한 동물모델에서 인지능력 개선과 감퇴한 운동능력의 향상 및 cholinergic neurotransmission system의 강화 효과를 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 연구 성과들로 비파엽 추출물이 퇴행성뇌질환인 AD 치료와 학습 및 기억력 개선에 있어 효과적인 대안으로서 보다 더 많은 분야에서 연구되기를 바라는 바이다. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of extract from Eriobotrya japonica leaves (EJE) on cognitive impairment induced by scopolamine, a muscarinic antagonist, in rats. Scopolamine injection (1mg/kg, i.p.) impaired performance in rats in the passive avoidance test as well as in water maze test and severely reduced cholinergic system reactivity, as indicated by reduced acetylcholine levels and increased acetylcholinesterase activity. Daily administration of EJE significantly increased step-through latency in the passive avoidance test, reduced escape latency, and increased time spent in the platform quadrant in the Morris water maze test. EJE protected against scopolamine-induced cholinergic system deficit, including reduced acetylcholine levels and increased acetylcholinesterase activity in whole brain homogenates. These results suggest that EJE provides a significant anti-amnesic effect against scopolamine-induced cholinergic system deficits and cognitive impairment.

        A Basic Study on Implementing Optimal Function of Motion Sensor for Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

        A Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (hereafter 'BNWAS') is to monitor and detect if an officer of watch(hereafter ‘OOW’) keeps a sharp lookout on the bridge. The careless lookout of an OOW could lead to marine accidents. For this reason on June 5th, 2009, IMO decided that a ship is equipped with a BNWAS. However, an existing BNWAS gives the OOW a lot of inconvenience and stress in its operation. It requires that the OOW should press reset buttons to confirm their alert watch on the bridge at every three to twelve minute. Many OOWs have complained that at some circumstances they cannot focus on their bridge activities including watch-keeping due to a lots of resetting inputs of BNWAS. Accordingly, IMO has allowed the use of a motion sensor as a resetting device. The motion sensor detects the movements of human body on the bridge and subsequently sends reset signals directly to BNWAS automatically. As a result, OOWs can work uninterrupted. However, some of classification societies and flag authorities have a slightly different stance on the use of motion sensor as a resetting method for BNWAS. The reason is that the motion sensor may trigger false reset signals caused by the motion of objects on the bridge, especially a slight movement such as toss and turn of human body which can extend the period of careless watch. As a basic study to minimize the false reset signals, this paper proposes a simple configuration of BNWAS, which consists of only three motion sensors associated with ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ logic gates. Additionally, several considerations are also proposed for the implementation of motion sensors. This study found that the proposed configuration which consists of three motion sensors is better than an existing one by reducing false reset signals caused by a slight movement of human body in one’s sleep. The proposed configuration in this paper filters false reset signals and is simple to be implemented on existing vessels. In addition, it can be easily installed just by a basic electrical knowledge.

      • 선교 항해당직 경보시스템용 모션센서의 최적기능 확보에 관한 연구

        해상 물동량의 증가에 따라 선박들이 점차 대형화 되어 가고 있고 선박의 수 또한 지속적으로 늘어나고 있다. 이러한 현상은 곧 해양사고의 증가로 이어지고 있는데 이 중 인적과실에 의한 해양사고가 대부분의 원인으로 밝혀져 있다. 인적과실 중 항해나 당직근무 중 졸음에 의한 사고가 빈번한데 이를 방지하기 위하여 IMO(international maritime organization, 국제해사기구)에서는 선교 항해당직 경보시스템의 의무탑재를 시행하고 있다. 하지만 현행의 선교 항해당직 경보시스템은 재설정 방식에 따른 불편함 때문에 항해사들의 불만이 제기되고 있어 이에 대한 해소책으로 IMO에서는 모션센서를 선교 항해당직 경보시스템에 도입할 것을 권고하고 있다. 그러나 이 모션센서의 탐지기술이나 동작원리는 처음 육상용 화재경보시스템 혹은 보안시스템용으로 개발 및 제작되어진 것이므로 이를 특수한 조건인 선박의 항해당직에 적용할 때 야기될 수 있는 문제점이나 고려사항등을 검토해 볼 필요가 있다. 이 논문에서는 이 모션센서의 선교에서의 이상적인 구성, 필요한 기능, 적확한 작동여부, 모션센서와 압력센서나 음성인식센서와 같은 다른 수단과의 병용 등을 고려하여 모션센서의 최적기능 확보를 위한 성능기준을 제시하고자 한다.
