Control Constructions in Korean Revisited
박홍근 한국생성문법학회 2012 생성문법연구 Vol.22 No.1
The goal of this paper is to examine whether the recent movement approach to control (Hornstein 1999, Boeckx and Hornstein 2004) gains further cross-linguistic support from object control constructions in Korean. I conclude from conceptual and empirical grounds that the movement analysis may not be an adequate framework for Korean. I contend that this is mainly because object control constructions in Korean basically belong to the arena of non-obligatory control. It is shown that certain facts in control constructions such as binding, NPI licensing, and passivization can only be accounted for by treating a controller and its controllee as two distinct arguments. Reverting to the old pro-based semantic analysis, I claim that some objections to it voiced by proponents of the movement analysis can be countered with a version of the Meaning Postulate (Cormack and Smith 2004) and an underlying structure in which a complement CP c-commands/precedes an accusative object. I show that structural and interpretive properties fall into place under the given analysis, suggesting that obligatory control-like interpretations in some cases be considered as preferred readings thereof facilitated by the scrambling of an object NP.

This study intends to understand the meaning and relation of movement generated from architectural space and program, a starting point of architecture proposed by contemporary architects. Movement is engendered by the spatial relationship of space rather than characteristic of individuation space. Spatial relationship of these space consists by the analysis and application of architectural program. Program is expressed by architect's unique style of analysis and application to modern society conceived. The research proposes that movement is intrinsic point of the architectural program and therefore the essence of architecture design procedure.

The overall goal of this study was to characterize and quantify ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in four different full-scale sequence batch reactor (SBR) wastewater treatment plants. Also, this study focused on assessing the occurrence of the alternative ammonia-oxidizing microbes such as anammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation) bacteria (AMX) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in these systems. Based on total AOB numbers and the estimated cell density in the mixed liquor samples, AOB constituted 0.3 - 1.8% of the total bacterial population in the four WWTPs. Based on clone library, Nitrosomonas ureae-like AOB were dominant in plant A and B, while plant C and D had Nitrosomonas nitrosa-like AOB as major AOB group. The four different AMX primer sets targeting AMX 16S rRNA gene produced PCR amplicons distantly related to Chlamydia and Planctomycetales group bacteria. However, it was not clear these groups of bacteria perform anammox reaction in the SBR plants. Also, molecular evidence of AOA was found in one of the SBR plants, with a sequence located in the deep branch of the sediment creanarchaeota group

This paper presents a numerical study for developing the moment magnifier method that is applicable to RC flat plates subject to combined axial compressive and floor load. For the nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. The flat plates to be studied are designed in accordance with the Direct Design Method in Korean Building Code for Structural Concrete. This paper proposes the buckling force and the moment magnification factor for the flat plate under the governing load condition that is the combined vertical and subsequently applied uniaxial compressive load. The buckling force is defined with two ingredients: the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Parametric studies are performed to investigate variations of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Based on the numerical results, this paper provides the design values of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity, and the design procedure for the moment magnifier method.

Large efforts have recently been made on research and development of sustainable and energy-efficient short-cut nitrogenremoval processes owing to strong attention to the energy neutral/positive wastewater treatment system. Anaerobicammonium oxidizing bacteria (anammox bacteria) have been highlighted since 1990’s due to their unique advantagesincluding 60% less energy consumption, nearly 100% reduction for carbon source requirement, and 80% less sludgeproduction. Side-stream short-cut nitrogen removal using anammox bacteria and partial nitritation anammox (PN/A) has beenwell established, whereas substantial challenges remain to be addressed mainly due to undesired main-stream conditions foranammox bacteria. These include low temperature, low concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, free ammonia, free nitrous acid ora combination of those. In addition, an anammox side-stream nitrogen management is insufficient to reduce overall energyconsumption for energy-neutral or energy positive water resource recovery facility (WRRF) and at the same time to complywith nitrogen discharge regulation. This implies the development of the successful main-stream anammox based technologywill accelerate a conversion of current wastewater treatment plants to sustainable water and energy recovery facility. Thisstudy discusses the status of the research, key mechanisms & interactions of the protagonists in the main-stream PN/A, andcontrol parameters and major challenges in process development.
