Membrane-based CO2 capture for post combustion
Vol.2015 No.0
Investigating new methods and reliable technologies competing with conventional industrial processes for CO2 capture and recovery such as absorption and adsorption is a great challenge in the current research. Generally conventional separation processes do not meet the present approach of process intensification but still has merit due to their maturity in technology and large-scale implementation. On the other hand, membrane-based gas separation technology is under active development aiming at advancing towards sustainable systems that minimizes CO2 emissions with many promising advantages such as simple design, small foot print and easy scale-up. However, existing polymeric membranes suffer from relatively low CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity, and also the presence of water vapor in the feed streams. This presentation will give a general view of the recent achievements for those systems and the main limitations and challenges to be faced will be presented with addressing the next steps that should be considered to advance as fast as possible towards realistic solutions for CO2 capture.

In this review, surface modification methods of hydrophobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane are introduced and their improved hydrophilicity results are discussed. Fluoropolymer based membranes, represented by PTFE membranes have been used in various membrane separation processes, including membrane distillation, oil separation and gas separation. However, despite excellent physical properties such as chemical resistance, heat resistance and high mechanical strength, the strong hydrophobicity of PTFE membrane surface has become a challenging factor in expanding its membrane separation application. To improve the separation performance of PTFE membranes, wet chemical, hydrophilic coating, plasma, irradiation and atomic layer deposition are applied, modifying the surface property of PTFE membranes while maintaining their inherent properties.

A highiy efficient energy production from renewable sources, without pollutant emission such as CO_2 and NO_x, is no longer a fantastic dream of a far future. This low energy and environment-friendly technology is being realized by recent developments in the fuel cell technology. Among various kinds of the fuel cell, the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) using proton-conducting membrane is the desirable choice in mobile and portable applications, due to its low operating temperature, possibility of using air as the oxidant medium and hydrogen or liquid as the fuel. However, many researches in the last decades have been focused on improving electrode catalyst and optimizing the stack design and operating conditions. That is, the development of membrane materials for PEFC has been overlooked and concerntrated mainly on the perfluorinated polymer, Nafion^ⓖ. Today, Nafion^ⓖ is facing many problems such as decreased proton conductivity, due to the loss of water-uptake ay high temperature, high gas permeability, methanol crossover, and high cost. Therefore, the development of effective and low cost membrane materials for fuel cells is very significant and urgent assignment in this fascinating field of fuel cell technology. In this review, some of the recent developments of proton-conducting polymeric membranes and future direction of the research on membranes for fuel cells are discussed.
