D. H. 로렌스의 『무지개』 연구 : 상징의 서술형식

My argumentation is that The Rainbow which is hailed as the greatest novel of D.H.Lawrence by the major critics is not only an impressive fictional interpretation of a part of English social and cultural history over three generations, but also a symbolic version of the operation of the unknowable forces of life within the self and within society. This novel can be interpreted in terms of dualism. The motif of light and dark, death and rebirth, consciousness and unconsciousness are constantly used throughout the novel. The main difficulties in the language of The Rainbow lie not so much in the rural dialect words but in the somewhat exaggerated expression of the philosophic thought. To understand the events of the novel on a simple level is generally no problem, but to appreciate the full significance of these events and their influence upon the inner lives of the protagonists requires careful search of the meaning of symbols and ritual scenes originated from biblical and pagan myth. Lawrence's interest in relationships goes beyond what a mere chronicle would require. He is absorbed by the subtle interplay between the fact and imagination that draws people together or allows them to drift apart. For instance, the proposal of marriage to Lydia can hardly happen on the level of ordinary human contact. The scene of proposal is evocative. Anna is elated by the unknown quality within Will, and Ursula tries to live her own self-contained life. And all we need do is to decode symbols and the symbolic ritual scenes.

문학의 영원한 주제인 인간에 대한 인식은, 시대적 상황에 따라 변천되어 왔음은 누구나 시인하는 바다. 문학도 다른 학문분야에서처럼 인간발견의 한 수단으로서 여러 과정을 겪어 왔다는 사실은 문학비평사에서 뚜렷이 들어나 있다. 크게는 고전적 태도와 낭만적 태도로 나눌 수 있으며, 시대적으로는 고전주의, 낭만주의, 자연주의, 또는 사실주의 등의 여러 차윈에서의 인간에 대한 인식의 방법론을 보아왔다. 현대에 이르러서는 절망속에서도, 상실한 인간의 존엄성과 가치를 다시 세우기위한 필사의 의지적 투쟁을 그 특징으로 삼고 있다고 한다면, 르네쌍스 시대에는 중세적 가치규범의 속박에서 해방된, 개인의 자율성과주체성의 확립에서 새로운 인간에 대한 인식이 출발한다고 말 할 수 있다. 르네쌍스의 이와 같은 시대적 정신과 일치하고있는 작가중의 하나가 바로 Christopher Marlowe(1564~1593)이다. 문학사상, 그 예술성이라 극작기술상으로 보아 다소의 결점이 있음에도 불구하고, 그 작품을 쓴 작가의 정신과 사상이 더 중요하게 다루어져야 할 작품을 자주 대할 수가 있거니와, 말로우는 바로 이러한 전통에 속하는 작가이다. 영국의 르네쌍스 시대의 극작가들 중에서 말로우는 특히 시대적 특성이 강한 작가로서 그의 주인공들이 당시의 인간에 대한 인식의 특성을 두드러지게 나타내고 있다는 점은, Harry Levin1)이나 Allardyce Nicoll2)의 공통적인 의견이다. 이 시대의 특성은 바로 중세적 가치 규범에서의 해방이었다. 고귀한 인간의 본성에 대한 자각은 속박으로부터의 인간해방의 과정을 통해서 이루어지거니와, 그 해방의 순서는 먼저 인간행동의 해방에서 시작이 된다. 말로우의 첫번째 작품인 "템버린 대왕(Tamburlaine the Great)"은 바로 해방된 인간행동의 찬미가 그 주제가 된다. 주인공 템버린의 권력에의 무한한 추구는 바로 해방된 행동인의 모습이다. 당시의 엘리자베스 시대 사람들은 인간행동의 무한대한 잠재력을 권력의 추구라는 인간속성에서 찾았던 분명하다. 템버린을 지배욕구(Libido dominandi)3)의 인간형이라고 규정지을수 있는 것은, 그가 이와같은 당시의 시대적특성을 반영하고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 템버린은 해방된 인간의 확대된 모습으로서 그의 진정한 속성은 하나의 완성된 인간형 이라기 보다는, 형성도중에 있는 자연의 힘 그 자체라는 주장이 나올수 있는 인물이다.4) 중세적 전통의 한계성을 뛰어넘어 인간정신을 무한대로 확대시켜 나갈수 있다는 작가에게서, 우리는 극단적인 낭만적 성향을 발견할 수 있거니와, 그가 창조한 주인공 자체도 터무니없이 과장되어 있음이 분명하다. 해리· 레빈은 이와같은 말로우의 주인공들을 오버·리처(over-reacher)5)라고 부른다. 이러한 주인공들은 바로 르네쌍스의 인본주의 정신의 산물이다. 그들은 하나같이 인간의 한계성을 지어 넘고져 시도한다. 해리·레빈의 말 처럼, 르네쌍스인들의 손에는 인간자신의 얼굴이 지나치게 크게 보이는, 확대된 의식의 거울이 있었던게 분명하다.

D.H. Lawrence's Women in Love is his great novel which is analyzing the relationships between two couples, Birkin-Ursula and Gerald-Gudrun in the problem of their marriage. Lawrence can be classed as a Romantic writer whose romantic conviction is that each man must create his own - he no longer talks in term of a transcendent personal God or an after life, but in terms of life, a central Romantic term: "I believe in life." We can recognize virtually anywhere in Lawrence's novels, particularly in the novel of Women in Love, the explanatory statements of his obsessive idea of the opposites and their relation. However, Lawrence is not content with mere recognition of the existence of the opposites. For Lawrence the integration or balance of the opposite forces is the key to the whole vital process. This idea is not the aspect of dualism, but the dynamic element of life which is described by Lawrence as polarity. D.H. Lawrence is the writer who drank deeply at philosophy's fountain, and his vision of life is influenced by Romantic writers' philosophic ideas and has a logic of its own. This paper is searching for influences of the Romantic thinkers, Arthur Schopenhauer, and mainly those of Frederick Nietzsche. Lawrence read greedily and widely, and, as Jessie Chambers observes, the reading was a groping for something that he could lay hold of as a guiding principle in his writing life. Among the many books of philosophy, Schopenhauer's The Metaphysics of Love and Nietzsche's Will to Power remained an abiding influence in Lawrence's philosophical development. As there is an important parallel relation between Lawrence and Nietzsche, it is particularly important to compare Nietzsche's idea of Dionysus and Apollo in The Birth of Tragedy with the polarity principle of life force in Study of Thomas Hardy and Women in Love. Women In Love, Lawrence's greatest novel, is his most successful attempt to combine metaphysic with a living sense of Being, to combine concept and metaphor. Like Nietzsche's masterpiece Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Lawrence's novel participates fully in what we have seen as the central philosophical task of its creator, which is the furthering of the evolution of man into complete individual like an angel.
