Retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 38 cases of bacterial meningitis that were proven by cerebrospinal fluid culture. Each case occurred by GBS (68.4%), Pneumococcus (15.8%), E. coli (5.3%), Streptococcus mitis (5.3%), Streptococcus bovis (2.6%), and Staphylococcus xylosus (2.6%). Compared to 28 cases with normal outcome, 10 cases who died or had adverse outcomes at hospital discharge were more likely to present with coma, seizure (before or within admission, focal, status epilepticus), require pressor or ventilator support, have initial peripheral blood leukocyte count less than 4,000/mm3 or neutrophil count less than 1,000/mm3, and have hydrocephalus or cerebral infarction by brain imaging.

$Eu^{2+}/Dy^{3+}$-doped $Sr_2MgSi_2O_7$ powders were synthesized using a solid-state reaction method with flux ($NH_4Cl$). The broad photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra of $Sr_2MgSi_2O_7:Eu^{2+}$ were assigned to the $4f^7-4f^65d$ transition of the $Eu^{2+}$ ions, showing strong intensities in the range of 375 to 425 nm. A single emission band was observed at 470 nm, which was the result of two overlapping subbands at 468 and 507 nm owing to Eu(I) and Eu(II) sites. The strongest emission intensity of $Sr_2MgSi_2O_7:Eu^{2+}$ was obtained at the Eu concentration of 3 mol%. This concentration quenching mechanism was attributable to dipole-dipole interaction. The $Ba^{2+}$ substitution for $Sr^{2+}$ caused a blue-shift of the emission band; this behavior was discussed by considering the differences in ionic size and covalence between $Ba^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$. The effects of the Eu/Dy ratios on the phosphorescence of $Sr_2MgSi_2O_7:Eu^{2+}/Dy^{3+}$ were investigated by measuring the decay time; the longest afterglow was obtained for $0.01Eu^{2+}/0.03Dy^{3+}$.

Occlusal bite forces are the most critical consideration factor in treatment planning. Measurement methods of occlusal bite forces were developed in a century, and affected factors are studied in many experiments. Gender, age, shapes of facial morphology, teeth position, periodontal states, etc., are revealed affective aspects of the occlusal bite forces. The dental clinician should make a treatment plan by considering occlusal bite forces and would predict the patient's prognosis. In clinical procedures, several specific factors that include endodontic treatment, implant treatment, and complete denture prosthesis cause severe results after treatments. If clinicians do not consider these factors before the treatment procedures, extraction of the tooth, implant, and dismission of the complete denture are struggled by patients. These factors (endodontic treatment, Implant, complete denture prosthesis) cause the changes of occlusal bite forces, and then consideration of these changes makes a great result of treatment. The purpose of this study was to summarize the parts that clinicians can refer to based on reviewing studies on complex factors that affect occlusal bite force.

Although dizziness is common, it is one of the most challenging symptoms in clinical medicine. Defining the type of dizziness has been considered the first step when approaching patients with dizziness. This approach was based on the belief that each type of dizziness reflects a specific underlying mechanism. A more recent approach involves grouping patients into 4 major categories: 1) acute prolonged spontaneous dizziness, 2) recurrent spontaneous dizziness, 3) recurrent positional dizziness, and 4) chronic persistent dizziness and imbalance. Vestibular neuritis and strokes are the most common causes of acute prolonged spontaneous dizziness, and neuro-otologic examination findings play a key role in the differential diagnosis. Careful history-taking is extremely important in diagnosing the disorders that cause recurrent spontaneous dizziness since the findings of the clinical examination and laboratory evaluations are often negative without a confirmatory diagnostic tool. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a predominant cause of recurrent positional vertigo and can easily be treated with canalith-repositioning maneuvers. Chronic persistent dizziness and imbalance occur in various degenerative or psychiatric disorders that frequently require a referral to a specialist. This new approach may be more practical for managing patients with dizziness.
3차원 동적집속모드 체외충격파 기기를 이용한 족저근막염 치료의 유용성

Purpose: This was a pilot study to examine the clinical usefulness of the newly developed three-dimensional sweep mode extracorporeal shockwave treatment (ESWT) in patients with plantar fasciitis. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional sweep mode ESWT was performed once a week for 5 weeks in patients with plantar fasciitis who showed no improvement with the conventional conservative treatment. A 100-mm visual analogue scale (VAS) reading for pain from walking and at rest after walking were collected before the treatment and 8 and 16 weeks after the initial treatment. In addition, the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) and EuroQol-5-dimension (EQ-5D) scores before and 16 weeks after the treatment were evaluated. Results: VAS for pain for walking improved from 50.60±8.38 to 19.80±15.61 at 8 weeks after the initial treatment (p=0.008) and 9.80±9.62 at 16 weeks after the treatment (p<0.001). VAS for pain at rest after walking improved from 36.60±19.55 to 11.80±12.95 at 8 weeks after the initial treatment (p=0.052) and 8.80±8.87 at 16 weeks after the treatment (p=0.024). Preoperative FAOS increased from an average of 74.80±9.73 before the treatment to an average of 81.00±8.86 at week 16 after the procedure (p=0.49) and compared to pre-treatment levels, there was a decrease of one level in the anxiety/depression domain of the EQ-5D, post-treatment. Conclusion: The results of this preliminary study confirmed that the newly developed EWST with the smart forging sweep mode was effective in improving pain and function in plantar fasciitis.
