As the discourse on modernism expands, non-Western modernism challenges the notion that it is primarily a Western European phenomenon. Korean modernism, developed within the constraints of Japanese imperialism, is being re-evaluated, revealing its unique context and complexities. Due to the historical context of under Japanese rule, Koreans—especially the elite often referred to as “modern boys”—experienced modernity with ambivalent feelings, perceiving it both as a liberation from traditional conventions and as a symbol of oppression. However, while modern boys experienced a “double bind” and faced discrimination and inner conflict, contemporary women, such as “modern girls,” endured an additional layer of oppression—gender inequality—further restricting their engagement with modernity, and thereby, modernism. In this context, Yi Sang’s short story “Wings” presents a perspective on modern girls that differs from that of his contemporaries, especially male authors. The story has been regarded as a reflection of the despair experienced by intellectuals under colonial subjugation, often portraying the narrator as a victim of the times. Consequently, in line with existing analyses, it has been criticized for engaging in self-rationalization and victimization by othering the female character. However, this paper examines the unique but relatively underexplored relationship between the narrator and his wife as a modern boy and a modern girl, the primary consumers of colonial modernity in Korea. Focusing on the enigmatic metaphor “a pair of cripples,” I will analyze Yi Sang’s genuine modernist approach to the relationship under the circumstances of colonized Korea, where previously absolute standards and values collapsed. The model of mutual recognition without rigid logic, as portrayed in Yi Sang’s short story, offers a potential framework for how modern Korean men might engage with contemporary feminist movements in the gender-polarized context of 21st-century Korea.

This study investigated the mediating effect of cyberbullying justification on the relationship between trait anger and cyberbullying perpetration among upper elementary school children. It also examined whether this mechanism differs based on experiences of cyberbullying victimization. A total of 596 fifth- and sixth-grade children (291 boys, 48.8%) from elementary schools in Seoul and GyeongGi-do completed self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.10. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses and a multi-group analysis were conducted to examine differences based on cyberbullying victimization status. Additionally, the bootstrap method was employed to assess mediating effects. The results of the study are as follows. First, the effects of trait anger and cyberbullying justification on cyberbullying perpetration were significant only among children who had experienced cyberbullying victimization. Second, regardless of the presence or absence of cyberbullying victimization, higher levels of trait anger were associated with increased levels of cyberbullying justification. Third, the mediating effect of cyberbullying justification on the relationship between trait anger and cyberbullying perpetration was significant only for the children with a history of cyberbullying victimization. Overall, this study demonstrates that the pathways linking trait anger to cyberbullying perpetration vary depnding on whether children have experienced cyberbullying victimization. It emphasizes the necessity of emotional and cognitive interventions to mitigate cyberbullying justification, particularly for children with prior victimization experiences.

Distress is an unpleasant emotional experience that may interfere with the ability to cope effectively with cancer. Distress can range from normal emotional responses, such as sadness and fear, to psychopathological states that damage psychosocial functioning, such as depression, anxiety, panic, social withdrawal, and existential crisis. It is reported that approximately 35– 45% of cancer patients experience clinically significant levels of distress, and the distress continues after treatment. Currently, about 1.74 million cancer patients and survivors live in Korea. Over the past 10 years, the survival rate has increased by 1.3 times and will most likely continue to increase. Although interest in cancer patients’ psychological difficulties and awareness of the need for psychological interventions are increasing, rarely is distress management provided by clinical psychologists in integrative cancer care systems. This comprehensive review aimed to explore 1) the concept of distress in cancer patients, 2) the basic model and principles of distress management, 3) available distress screening and assessment tools, and 4) current status of distress management and its clinical applications in Korea. Further, we discussed the roles of clinical psychologists and researchers in oncological settings in optimizing distress management in cancer patients.

The purpose of this study is to present the importance of stress in communicative language teaching and to find out how pronunciation and English stress are presented in the English textbooks for Korean middle school students. Six types of middle school English textbooks were used for the research analysis and the results were as follows. First, the pronunciation parts were very limited (less than 2% in a lesson) in the current textbooks. Second, textbooks ignored the general rules of stress―one of which was the standardized transcription method of stress. Third, most textbooks focused only on a single type of stress patterns, such as word stress or sentence stress. Consequently, the frequency of the stress presentation in the textbooks were very limited and the explanations of stress were quite unsystematic. In conclusion, to improve students’ communicative competence in English, 1) textbooks should increase pronunciation sections including stress materials; 2) the transcription method of stress should be more clear and precise in textbooks to reduce students’ confusion; 3) textbooks need to expand the scope of English stress to prepare for various communication situations. Moreover, the communicative value of stress should be widely recognized among teachers and students

Childbearing has been thought of as one of the inevitable and essential human activities. Despite advancements in various areas such as philosophy, science, and technology, the need to procreate has remained an inherent human instinct. According to Hannah Arendt, who defines the three categories of basic human activities as “labor,” “work,” and “action,” procreation belongs to that of “labor” in the way it satiates the basic human needs of humans as animals. However, Foucault’s notion of biopolitics revises and broadens the definition of procreation as “labor”; it is not done as a result of an individual desire but rather biopolitics for a government to expand and maintain its power. Although Virginia Woolf did not use the exact term, she was acutely aware of how biopower operates, as evident in her works such as Mrs. Dalloway. In her short story “A Society,” she imagines what could happen if women realize who has forced them to bear children and how much political power childbearing has. She actively thinks about the possibility of altering procreation from “labor” coerced by “biopolitics” to “action” to fight against the patriarchal society. Although this possibility does not turn out successfully in the narrative, it leaves hope for the next generation. .
