This paper looks into the middle English Word Variation in Chaucer`s Canterbury Tales. The characteristics of word order in Middle English compared with Modern English are as follows: (1) The word order in the noun phrase appeared in the following way. a. [NP D+A+N] ==> [NP D+N+A] b. [NP D+A+N+PP] ==> [NP PP+D+A+N] c. [NP D+A+N+[AP A+to-inf]] ==> [NP D+A+N+[AP to-inf +A]] d. [NP D+A+N+[AP Part+PP]] ==> [NP [AP PP+Part]+D+A+N] (2) The relative clause modifying its head noun appears as follows. [D+N+PP + RelC +(ther was also)] ==> [D+N+ +(ther was)+PP+(also)+RelC] (3) The numerals modifying its head noun can be separated as follows. [S+MV+Num+N+Ad] → [N+Ad+S+MV+Num] (4) The word order related with objects, complements, and adverb phrases will be as follows in the beginning of the sentence. 1) a. [O+AV+S+MV] b. [O+S+MV] c. [O+MV+S] 2) a. [C+MV+S] (7) Even though many differences in word order between modern English and Canterbury English can be found, the latter obeys the rules and constraints that Chomsky and Ross proposed except coordinate structure constraints. (8) According to the above facts, we can guess that the structure of the Canterbury English will be flat structure, not hierarchical structure. (9) Finally, because Canterbury Tales is a verse and it follows the rules of versification, the word order could be intertwined so drastically that it shows a lot of differences compared with modern English.

There are two treasures in Mireukri, Suanbo. Both treasures are very important cultural heritages managed by Chungju city. One is Five-story Stone Stupa in Mireukri and the other is Stone Buddha’s Statue in Mireukri. The former was nominated as treasure number 95, and the latter as treasure number 96 in 1963. In this paper, the translation of the vocabularies which contain cultural elements is discussed somewhat shortly, and the errors in the two information boards are examined, focusing on the vocabulary errors. In the two information boards, there are too many errors of vocabularies. In examining the full text of the information boards, the failure for the translator of the information boards to understand contents of the source text is found. That failure not only brings unfit vocabularies to the target text but makes the target text difficult to understand. There are also many grammatical errors. The grammatical errors are diverse from the simple misspelling to ungrammatical sentences as well as wrong tenses. There should be taken some methods to make the translation of the information boards free from errors.

A cornerstone is located at the entrance of Yeongneung which was recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List in accordance with the Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 2009. As is well-known Yeongneung is one of the 40 royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Like the cornerstone, all the information boards here were renovated after it was designated as a world heritage. There are more than twenty information boards here including the cornerstone. But in this paper we examined only four information boards, namely the cornerstone “Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty”, “Tomb of King Sejong the Great (Yeongneung)”, “Sejongjeon” and “Yepongneung Monument” (the misspelling of Yeongneung is shown at the title of the information board). The errors are examined in four categories, namely vocabulary errors, errors caused by addition, errors caused by omission and unfaithfulness of translation. Many vocabularies are found to be used wrongly, and the translator added too much useless contents and omitted much more necessary contents. Those errors naturally lead to unfaithfulness of the translation. The source texts themselves seem to be very difficult to understand. They inserted a lot of Chinese characters in the source texts and the source texts contain a lot of culture specific items. The distortion of the contents seems to have been caused by the unfaithfulness to the source texts as examined in this study.
