Vol.10 No.2
The structure of Shakespeare's sonnets gives a progressive movement, repeating, illustrating, reinforcing the theme, and ending with an aphoristical couplet. His poetie development depends upon modesty, good sense and intelligence. His images form a rich carpet of suggestion, a tefxture of reiterated but varied persuasion, although they are plain, clear, and liberal. The main themes of the sonnets are the eternity of beauty and idolatry of love. Donne's sonnets, however, tend to follow the structure of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. His metaphysical attitude still affects his Holy Sonnets. His main theme lies in his true self as a sincere Christian. Molton's sonnet form follows and cultivates the Italian form. The style is plain and direct, but his themes are variant; Milton's love of freedom, his belief in voluntary association, impatience with religious intolerance, and praise of distinguished men in religion and leadership.

The Victorian age was an age of doubt and uncertainty because new scientific knowledges like Darwin's theory of the evolution of species and the doctrine of scientific determinism challenged the tradition of Christian faith and ideas. The Poet laureate of the Victorian age, Tennyson was much influenced by the drift of public opinion and suffered from the conflict between faith and doubt. We, however, might find an optimism in most of his masterpieces, for example, "Ulysses". Enoch Arden", and In Memoriam. "Ulysses" was written by the poet under the sense of loss and that all had gone by, but that still life must be fought out to the end. Therefore the hero in "Ulysses" believes that his meaningful and creative life does not lie in the vanished past but in the bright future full of many adventures and adversities. In the narrative poem of true love, "Enoch Arden", the hero Enoch has the conviction based on his firm faith that God is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. He, therefore, takes a hopeful view of everything before his long voyage and he comes to overcome many adversities during the stay in the lonely island. Finally when he chanced to arrive at his homeland, he could master his great frustration and realize true love toward his wife, Annie by the supreme power of God. In Memoriam, the poet is in lamenting his friend, teased by the hope of immortality and reunion beyond death. He is distressed by the idea of a mechanical universe or determinism. However, this long elegy results in the spiritual record of a deep and genuine transposition of mood from despair to acceptance and hope. His optimism originates from his deep meditation based on his Christian faith that God is almighty and merciful, so that God cannot leave human beings to remain in death. Thus his contemplation leads him to believe in his friend's resurrection and the sorrowful poem turns into a song of victory and life arising out of defeat and death.
