Background and Objectives: the nasal cavity and occur on both infectious and noninfectious basis, and genetic etiology is suspected in the development of nasal polyps. 5-Lipoxygenase is the first enzyme committed in the metabolic pathway leading to the intracellular synthesis of leukotrienes. Some studies have shown that leuko-trienes were significantly higher in nasal polyps from aspirin-sensitive asthmatics than in nasal polyps from aspirin-tolerant asthmatics and normal nasal mucosa. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate whether genetic polymorphism of the core promoter region of the 5-lipoxygenase gene contributes to the development of nasal polyps. Subjects and Method:This study was conducted in 97 nasal polyp patients associated with chronic sinusitis and 92 healthy controls. Genetic polymorphisms of 5-lipoxygenase gene promoter were genot Results:There were no significant differences between the 5-lipoxygenase gene promoter polymorphisms in nasal polyp patients with chronic sinusitis and those in healthy controls (p= 0.76). In the nasal polyp patients associated with chronic sinusitis, the frequencies of 6-bp deletion were lower than those of healthy controls (OR, 0.88 95% CI, 0.48- 1.60), but there was no statistical significance (p= 0.67). The frequencies of 6-bp addition were higher than those of healthy controls (OR, 1.96; 95% CI, 0.33- 10.6), but no significant diference was found (p= 0.68). Conclusion:We concluded that 5-lipoxygenase gene promoter polymorphism did not show genetic predisposition with regard to nasal polyps in the Korean population. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2007 ;50 :310-3)

비강과 부비동에서 발생하는 반전성 유두종은 병리조직학적으로는 양성 상피종양이나 재발율이 높고 드물게는 악성 종양으로 변할 수 있어 지속적인 추적관찰이 필요한 질환이다. 저자들은 1982년부터 1996년까지 만 15년간 조직검사상 반전성 유두종으로 확진되어 치료받았으며 추적관찰이 가능하였던 34예의 환자들을 대상으로 성별 및 연령 분포, 악성 변화 동반유무, 임상증상, 비내수술의 과거력, 병소부위, 수술방법 및 재발유무 등에 대하여 후향적 관찰을 시행하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 30대에서 50대 사이에서 가장 호발하였으며 남성과 여성의 비율은 2.2:1로 남성이 더 많았다. 가장 흔한 증상으로는 편측성 비폐색이였으며, 호발부위는 비강과 상악동이었다. 전체 재발율은 7.4%(27예중 3예)로 보존적 치료의 경우 17%(18예중 3예)였고, 광범위 절제를 한 경우 재발은 보이지 않았다. 악성변화는 34예중 7예였다. 30대에서 50대 사이에 편측성 비폐색을 주소로 내원한 환자는 술전 생검이 필요할 것으로 사료되며, 높은 재발율을 보이고 악성화의 경향이 있으므로 오랜 기간의 추적관찰이 필요할 것으로 생각된다. Background: Inverted papilloma is a pathologically benign lesion which occurs in the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. But it carries somewhat malignant behavior. So many clinicians classify the inverted papilloma as a premalignant lesion. Objectives: Aim of this study was to analyze overall characteristics, incidence of malignant transformation, and recurrence of inverted papilloma after surgical treatment. Materials and Methods: Authors analyzed 34 cases of inverted papilloma confirmed by biopsy from 1982 to 1996. Results: The peak incidence was in 4th and 6th decade, and the ratio of males to females was 2.2 : 1. The most common presenting symptom was unilateral nasal obstruction, and duration of symptom was less than 1 year in most cases(44%). Sixteen patients had previous operation history and the most common surgery was nasal polypectomy. The most common origin site was nasal cavity and maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus in descending order. Total recurrence rate was 7.4% (3 cases in 27 cases). After conservative operations, the recurrence rate was 17% (3 case in 18 cases), whereas after radical operations, there was no recurrence. Malignant transformation occurred in 7 out of 34 cases. Conclusion: Inverted papilloma has mostly occurred with unilateral nasal obstruction. So, preoperative biopsy is necessary for the patients with unilateral nasal obstruction at the age from 30s to 50s. The types of surgery should be selected by the location and extent of lesion, past operation history and histological finding. It has a tendency of high recurrence, so we recommend long term follow up period.

This Paper considers the heading and depth control problem for an underactuated AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) HW200. The HW200 is a torpedo-type AUV that is developed from Hanwha corporation R&D Center for military operation such as MCM (Mine Counter Measures). The HW200 controls horizontal and vertical motion with two stern plane and two rudder plane. It is well known that fine control of an AUV motion is not easy because of model uncertainties, highly nonlinear and coupled motions. To overcome those kind of uncertainties, a number of control methods have been presented. In this paper, the motion controllers of the HW200 are designed using PD controller design method based on the linear and perturbed model of the typical 6-DOF equations of an AUV, and confirmed the effectiveness of the controller through simulations and field test.

만성 부비동염환자의 점막을 병리조직학적 분류에 따라 Jones와 Reid법에 의해 당단백질의 분포와 구성성분을 관찰함이 만성 부비동염의 병인을 이해하는데 도움이 되리라 믿고 본 연구를 시행하였다. The various glycoproteins in the mucosa, obtained from 25 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis. were observed histochemically by means of Jones and Reid technique. The purposes of the study are to know the distribution of various glycoproteins in mucosa of each pathological type(edematous, infilterative, fibrous, and mixed) and to find any clues to explain the pathogenesis of chronic maxillary sinusitis. The results were as follows : 1.The order of frequency in various pathological types were edematous type(44.0%), mixed type(32.0%), infiltrative type(12.0%) and fibrous type(12.0%). 2.Distribution of glycoproteins in mucosa. 1) In the colummer cell : i) Acid glycoprotein was demonstrated in 76.0% of the cases, which was composed of sulfomucin(78.9%) and sialomuchin(21.1%), and neutral glycoprotein was in 24.0%. ii) relation between various glycoproteins and pathological types : a. Neutral glycoprotein was observed in mixed type(37.5%) and edematous type(27.3%). b. Among the acid glycoproteins, sialidase sensitive sialomucin was found in infiltrative type(33.3%) and in edematous type(14.2%), while sialidase resistant sialomucin was in edematous(14.2%) and mixed type(20.0%). 2) In the goblet cell : Sulfomucin was only demonstrated. 3) In the basement membrane : i) Acid glycoprotein was observed in 96.6% of cases, which was composed of sulfomucin(91.7%) and sialidase resistant sialomucin(8.3%), while neutral glycoprotein was only in 4.0%. ii) Neutral glycoprotein was observed in mixed type(12.5%) and sialidase resis tent sialomucin was in edematous type(18.2%). 3.Distribution of various glycoproteins in submucosa. 1) In the submucosal stroma : Sulfomucin was only observed. 2) In the gland : The subepithelial glands were mixed(64.0%), serous(28.0%) and mucous glands(8.0%). Glycoproteins in the glands were sulfomucin of acid type(43.9%) and neutral type(56.1%) 3) Around blood vessel : Glycoprotein was acid type, consisted of sulfomucin(92.0%) and sialidase resistant sialomucin(8.0%). Sialidase resistant sialomuchin was only found in the edematous type(18.1%). As the result of this study, acid glycoprotein, especially sulfomucin was more predominant than other types in all tissue of the mucosa of chronic maxillary sinusitis except in the subepithelial gland. It should be studied further to find out the mechanism of acid glycoprotein in chronic maxillary sinusitis.
