Although elbows and bends are commonly used in practice, many questions regarding the optimum
arrangement of them still remain unanswered. The effect due to an elbow or bend lasts for a
considerable distance downstream of it and is severe when two of it are in the system. The main
objectives of this study are to computationally simulate flows in curved piping systems with elbows or
bends and to contribute to identifying the optimum pipe length between or after them. Numerical
simulations are based on the finite element method and the penalty method that is the technique in
which the pressure is eliminated by using incompressibility constraint. It is found that the developing
process of the mean velocity in a curved piping is influenced by the inlet shear rates.
