Ancient and Modern Dictionary of Chinese Characters is a compilation of 7,353 chinese characters found in earlier rhyme dictionaries, primers, dictionaries of chinese characters. Its format is different from other conventional dictionaries in that it shows sound, meaning and interpretation of each headword at the same time. This dictionary is a valuable material for the study of korean translation of chinese characters, lexical history of korean language and phonetics of chinese characters. It can be utilized as a excellent teaching manual for it registers various examples sino-korean words formed from each chinese character. Also, it can be consulted in establishing language policy for it contains data on chinese characters used in South Korea, North Korea, China and Japan and word formation units of Commonly Used 2000 Chinese Characters in Korea. This dictionary was a ground breaking achievement at the time of its publication but has inevitable limits of being a product of analog era. It is required to succeed and develop its innovative ambition by constructing a database of dictionaries of chinese characters along with efficient search engine in accordance with new environment of digital era. 박병철, 2020, 고금한한자전의 편찬과 역사적 의의, 어문연구, 187 : 7~26 고금한한자전은 우리나라 역대 운서, 한자 학습서 그리고 한자자전에 올라 있는 한자 7,352자를 전재(轉載)하여 편집한 것이다. 기존의 일반적인 자전과는 그 형식과 체제를 달리한 것으로 표제 한자인 개별 한자의 음과 새김 그리고 그 자해(字解)를 한 눈에 볼 수 있도록 엮은 것이다. 그 결과 이 자전은 한자의 새김 연구는 물론 국어 어휘사 연구의 기본 자료이면서 한자음 연구에 활용할 수 있는 자료이다. 더불어 개별 한자를 중심으로 형성된 한자어 용례를 항목마다 다수 제시하여 교습 자료로서의 기능도 갖고 있다. 또한 한국, 중국, 일본, 북한의 한자 자료와 한국 상용한자(2000자)안의 한자 조어수(造語數) 등을 제시하여 어문 정책 수립에도 참고할 수 있는 자료이다. 이 자전은 편찬 당시로 보면 훌륭한 저술이었으나 아날로그적 시대의 한계를 뛰어넘지 못하였다. 디지털 시대의 환경변화에 따른 역대 자전 데이터베이스 구축과 검색 기능을 수반한 웹서비스 등으로 이 자전이 지향했던 의미를 계승, 발전시켜야 할 것이다.
