Recently, a lot of surveys and excavations have taken place within the city of Hanyang, which was located within the four main gates of old Seoul. Fortunately, the area has a wealth of maps, photographs, and cadastral maps. When conducting surveys in Seoul, it is very useful to use this material for research prior to investigation, as it can provide much valuable information. Drilling columnar sections into occupation layers can also serve to provide useful information. This paper also discusses a variety of photography techniques. Due to the limitations of the study area being within the four main gates of old Seoul, it is relatively difficult to undertake aerial photography of archaeological sites, compared to other areas. Thus, a variety of ways to overcome these conditions were proposed. In addition, given that many of the archaeological remains consist of large stone buildings, the usefulness of vertical photography which may produce photographs that may be measured are discussed as an alternative to the actual drawing of these stone buildings which take up much of the researcher’s time. Finally, following the above discussions, field survey, preliminary excavation and excavation techniques are briefly examined..
(Anat Biol Anthropol) Vol.36 No.4
The process of recovery and restoration at the archaeological site is excavated by applying the theory and principles of archaeology, but when human bones are discovered, a forensic analysis called “forensic archaeology” should be conducted. Applying archaeological techniques to forensic sites allows all the processes to be carried out systematically and scientifically collected geographical and environmental information around the site to help interpret events. But, so far, even if human bones are found in archeological sites, excavations and field analysis through the forensic archaeology approach have not been conducted yet. The Hanul Cultural Heritage Research Institute excavated in eight areas from 2009 to 2011, including human bones excavated from the well side of the Japanese colonial era at Cheong-Jin district, 12-16 area and human bones excavated under the floor at 150 area. All of the human bones excavated in this study were excavated from the 5th floor (V floor), the mid-Joseon period layer. During the Joseon Dynasty, this area was a commercial and residential area where street vendors and government offices were concentrated. Thus, these were an area that was archaeologically unpredictable to find human bones. Moreover, each bone was found at the well and beneath floors, respectively, and due to its special archeological situation, several distorted interpretations of the burial process were divided on the spot. Therefore, in this study, the human bone under the well and the floor was regarded as the bone placed in the forensic situation, and then the forensic archaeological analysis of the human bone was attempted to correctly explain the burial process of ancient human bones through literature and forensic analysis.
Vol.0 No.5
This study examines the Lime Soil Mixture Burials(L.S.M.B.) excavated due to the large-scale housing developments which took place in Seoul, Korea. A comparative study is undertaken on the L.S.M.B of the Eunpyeong Newtown 2-B site and Sinnae-dong site.In the Early Joseon period, L.S.M.B were generally used by the sadaebu(the ruling class), but this type of burial also came to be used, in some cases, by the wealthy urban class, following a certain time lapse. This paper examines how the large L.S.M.B clusters came to be formed at each site based on the textual records of the Joseon dynasty. It is confirmed that L.S.M.B. could only be used 4 kilometers beyond the perimeter of the capital city(城底十里). The lime-plastered walls of the L.S.M.B were examined in cross-section in order to identify the construction method of the burial. The results of the study indicate that L.S.M.B were made using a variety of methods which have previously been identified. The construction methods were classified into three main types and comparisons were made between the L.S.M.B of Eunpyeong 2-B and Sinnae-dong.

Parasite infection rates estimated by examining ancient coprolites can provide insights into parasitism in Joseon society. Using newly discovered Joseon period cases is essential to regularly update the parasite infection rates and reinforce the reliability of our previous estimations. In the present study, we investigated parasite infections in Joseon coprolites newly isolated from the cities of Euijeongbu, Gumi, and Wonju. We then updated the overall parasite infection rates of Joseon period samples (n=30) as follows: 86.7% (26/30) for Trichuris trichiura, 56.7% (17/30) for Ascaris lumbricoides, 30.0% (9/30) for Clonorchis sinensis, and 30.0% (9/30) for Paragonimus westermani. The parasite infection rates in the Joseon society, estimated through coprolite examination, were very similar to those determined previously despite the addition of new cases to the existing data pool.
