본 연구는 한국의 國語라는 개념이 형성된 배경을 밝히며, 또한 형성된 國語라는 개념이 언어 근대화의 과정 속에서 여러 영향을 받으면서 어떤 변화의 과정을 거쳤는지를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해서 먼저 언어의 근대화에 대한 논의를 2장에서 할 것이다. 國語개념의 형성은 언어 근대화의 과정 속에서 진행된다는 관점으로 왜 國語개념이 필요하였는가를 이론적으로 밝히기 위해서이다. 2장에서는 먼저 ‘근대’라는 개념에 대한 논의를 한 다음에, 언어적 관점에서 근대화가 이루어지는 과정을 본고에서는 2 가지 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 하나는 다이글로시아(diglossia) 현상과 이 현상을 해소하려는 활동이 언어 근대화에 이어진다는 관점, 다른 하나는 nation이라는 개념을 언어와 관련시켜서 보는 관점이다. 3장에서는 본격적으로 한국의 언어 근대화와 國語개념의 형성 과정을 살펴볼 것이다. 2장에서 논의한 언어 근대화에 대한 이론적 논의를 바탕으로 하여 한국의 언어 근대화 과정에서는 구체적으로 어떠한 과정을 겪어서 國語개념을 형성하게 되었는지를 고찰하는 단계이다. 언어 근대화 과정의 중요 요소인 4 가지 문제(문자의 문제, 입말과 글말의 불일치 문제, 언어 규범화의 문제, 표준어의 문제)가 한국의 언어 근대화 과정에서는 어떻게 다루어지고, 해결의 길로 나가는지에 주목하면서 논의를 진행할 것이다. 한국의 경우 일제강점기 이전에 진행되어 왔던 언어의 근대화 과정이 중간에 일제에 의한 식민 지배에 들어감으로써 일시적으로 중단되어, 대신에 일제라는 외부의 권력에 의해서 언어 정책이 진행되었다. 이때 식민 지배의 일환으로 진행된 언어 정책에는 이미 일본에서 형성되었던 일본의 国語개념이 반영되어 있었던 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 일제라는 외부의 힘이 주체가 된 언어 정책도 충분히 살펴볼 것이다. 이렇게 해서 한국의 國語개념이 갖는 내재적 의미를 살피기 위해 이 개념이 생긴 시기의 역사적 배경과 사상적 배경과 같은 사회적 요소를 같이 고찰하면서 아래에 제시한 세 가지 연구 문제의 답을 밝힐 것이다. 1. 한국에서의 언어 근대화의 핵심이 무엇인지. 2. 한국에서의 언어 근대화에 영향을 미친 요소에는 어떤 것들이 있었는지. 3. 한국의 國語개념은 역사적 상황 및 일본의 国語개념의 어떤 영향을 받았으며, 개념적으로 어떤 변화가 있었는지. This study examines the history on which the concept of the Korean 'national language(gugeo, 國語)' was founded by examining what kind of ideology played a role in the modernization of Korean, as well as an analysis of the process of language modernization in Korea. The primary goal of this thesis is to identify the changes in the Korean 'national language' which have occurred over the course of time and their influences. We will first discuss the causation of modernization in language in Chapter 2. The chapter discusses the concept of 'modernity' and analyses the process of modernization in-depth from two different linguistic stand points. The first perspective argues that the concurrent existence of the Diglossia phenomenon and its consequences lead directly to the modernization of language. The second perspective argues the culture and identity related to the formation of an independent 'nation' leads to notable changes in language. In chapter 3, the process of language modernization in Korea and the concept of the Korean 'national language' will be discussed. This chapter will cover four essential elements to language modernization (writing systems, verbal and written discrepancies, language normalization, and language standardization) and how these aforementioned elements played a role in the modernization of Korean language. In the case of Korean, the modernization process of the language was temporarily interrupted by the invasion of the nation state by Japanese imperialism. During this state of colonization, strictly enforced language policies ensured the prohibited use of Korean and the implementation of the Japanese language. For this reason, the concept of the Japanese 'national language(kokugo, 国語)' will be analyzed in the light of their influence over the language policy by Japan in Korea. In order to fully examine and understand the concept of Korean 'national language', this study strives to analyze various social factors such as historical and ideological events of different time periods to answer three research questions: 1. What is the modernization of the Korean language? 2. What were the factors that influenced language modernization in Korea and their consequences on the language? 3. How was Korean 'national language' influenced by key historical events and the concept of Japanese 'national language', and what kind of impact did they have on its development?
