Poly lactic acid is a biobased biodegradable polymer produced as a byproduct from various renewable sources. Monomer lactic acid produced from depolymerized PLA can be used for many industrial applications. The estimation of biodegradability of polymers has been developed. However most of the existing methods require a long term or need harsh conditions such as high temperature and acidic and basic environment. Thus, in this study, we focus on development of feasible testing method and quantitative measurement of biodegradability. The PLA sample with different specific surface area was prepared and anoxic digester sludge was inoculated into each sample. The CO2 and CH4 production were monitored according to time in order to estimate the specific gas production rate based on surface area of polymers.

Electrosynthesis in bioelectrochemical system is the reverse pathway to reduce oxidized carbon form to value added carbon form. Autotrophic bacteria which could use carbon dioxide as carbon source use reductive pathway by utilizing reducing equivalents such as Wood-Ljungdhal pathway and reverse TCA cycle. Reducing equivalents, for example hydrogen, could be replaced by electrode which provide reducing potential for chemical synthesis. Electron and hydrogen ion are supplied through the electrode to microorganism. Then, reduction reaction could be occurred in biological system to produce bio-products of complemental amount of reducing equivalents. To supply these equivalents for reduction, cathodic chamber acquires electron and hydrogen ion from anodic chamber through electrolysis. Further study is improving the rate of biological reaction by giving much more amount of reducing equivalents.
