There are two major phases in facilities planning, the first phase is selecting suitable facilities and the second is determining the layout of the facilities. These two phases should be considered simultaneously because of the interaction between them. Simulation is a useful tool for solving two phases iteratively. However, it is a difficult tool to the user who is not proficient in simulation modeling. This is a report of a development of the user interface that connect the layout simulator developed in SIMPLE++ and the DBMS containing necessary data for facilities planning. The developed system is applied to a shop manufacturing rubber-parts for automobiles.

The major components of an engine are the cylinder block, cylinder head, crankshaft, connecting rod, and camshaft, which are more popularly known as the 5 C's. Thus, the engine shop usually consists of six sub-lines, including five machining lines and one assembly line. The flow line is the typical concept of the layout when the engineer designs the engine shop. This paper introduces a simulation study regarding the new crankshaft machining line in a Korean automotive factory. The major factors for designing the machining line are considered, and their effects on the system performance are evaluated with a three-dimensional(3D) simulation model that is developed with $QUEST^{(R)}$. The initial layout is analyzed using the simulation model, and we suggest some ideas for improvement.

The major components of an engine are engine block (or cylinder block), cylinder head, crank shaft, connecting rod and cam shaft. Thus the engine shop usually consists of six sub-lines, five machining lines and one assembly line. Flow line is the typical concept of layout for machining these parts, especially for engine block. In order to design an engine block machining line, several factors should be considered such as yearly production target, working hours, machines, tools, material handling equipments and so on. If the designers of manufacturing line were unaware of some factors those would be influenced on the system performance, it would make greater problems in the phase of mass production. Therefore the initial design of engine block machining line should be verified carefully. Simulation is the most powerful tool for analyzing the initial layout. This paper introduces the major factors those should be considered for designing the machining line and their effects on the system performance. 3D simulation models are developed with QUEST. Using the simulation model developed the initial layout is analyzed, and we suggest some ideas for improvement.

Virtual Manufacturing is a powerful methodology for developing a new product, new equipment and new production system. It enables the checking errors in design before production. This paper is a case study of virtual manufacturing in an excavator factory. The final welding operations of the boom and the rotating table of upper body are selected for application. 3D models of parts and fixtures are developed with $CATIA^{(R)}$ and 3D simulation models are developed with $IGRIP^{(R)}$. These models are used for verifying the design of fixture and for the motion design of robot. As a result, the manual welding systems are replaced by automatic systems and many design errors are corrected in the design phase, which reduces the developing cost and time.

Virtual manufacturing (VM) is a powerful technology for developing a new product, new equipment and new manufacturing system, and three-dimensional (3D) simulation is a core technology in VM. 3D simulation involves both mechanical simulation and discrete event simulation. This paper introduces a case study of implementing 3D simulation for developing an automatic assembly line in a Korean optical factory. This factory produces a lens module that is the part of a phone-camera. 3D simulation technology is applied from the early stage of development. In the conceptual design and the initial design phases for individual equipment, 3D mechanical simulation using $CATIA^{(R)}$ and $IGRIP^{(R)}$ is conducted. 3D discrete event simulation with $QUEST^{(R)}$ is applied to the detailed design of the equipment and of the whole system. The focus of the simulation is to verify the technical and economical feasibility of the new automatic system. As a result, the takt time is reduced to the quarter of the manual system, and the number of workers in a line is reduced tremendously.

For developing a new Tire Manufacturing Cell, the cooperation between the designer of facilities and the designer of system is very important. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simulation model that can be applied to the system design of Tire Manufacturing Cell. The mechanic characteristics of new facilities are obtained from facility design team and the simulation model is developed with SIMPLE++ using those input data. A model for estimating the number of tire drum required is also suggested and it is verified with numerical examples. The results of simulations can be fed back to the facility design team and used for modifying the structure of the facilities.
