This study investigated the convergence of the QEEG and mood state changes in healthy females from teens to twenties on the inhalation of jasmine oil in different concentrations (0.01~100%). Brain activity upon stimulation by different concentrations was analyzed based on the RPVs and CVB, representing a rate of change compared with the background QEEG. The emotions elicited through jasmine were evaluated on a 20-point scale. The result of this evaluation showed that jasmine deactivated fast alpha but activated theta. In addition, it provided evidence for changes in the frequency band according to concentration. As concentration increased, the effect of alpha inhibition decreased, while the effect of inhibition of the high frequency band (20~50 Hz) increased. SEF50 and SEF90, which indicate the state of arousal, decreased as the jasmine concentration increased. Furthermore, it was assessed as having a pleasant, feminine, fresh and soft odor. Therefore, this study suggested that the inhalation of jasmine oil affected brain wave activities and mood states.

In this study, we evaluated the scent intensity, emotional response, and EEG response according to the concentration of bergamot scent inhaled by young women whose average age was 18, and analyzed the correlation between these factors. The correlation between bergamot concentration (P, vol %) and odor intensity (I) was [I] = 1.22 + 0.86P (r2 = 0.99). The scent intensity of bergamot was about 3.8. The emotional response to the scent of bergamot was rated as pleasant, fresh, refreshing and feminine. Inhaling bergamot decreased the α waves in the brain and increased the θ, β, and γ waves. Additionally, the edge frequencies of the SEF50 and SEF90 were increased by 0.14 Hz to 0.59 Hz and 0.75Hz to 1.26 Hz respectively by bergamot. The odor intensity (concentration) and emotional response regarding bergamot showed a weak correlation with the amount of change in the edge frequency (ΔSEF50 and ΔSEF90). These results suggest that bergamot is a refreshing, feminine fragrance with an arousing effect that activates the brain.

This study investigated the convergence of the QEEG and mood state changes in healthy females from late teens to twenties in relation to the inhalation of peppermint oil (peppermint) in different concentrations (0.1~100%). Brain activity upon stimulation by different concentrations was analyzed based on the RPVs and CVB (%), representing a rate of change compared with the background QEEG. Peppermint showed the effect of relaxation at low concentrations (0.1 and 1%) with increased θ and α waves and decreased β and γ waves. As the concentration of peppermint increases, the α wave decreases, and the θ, β and w waves increase, and there is an arousal effect. Peppermint was rated as having a refreshing, exhilarating, and intense smell. At a low concentration of 0.1%, peppermint chiefly produced a feeling of pleasantness, freshness and refreshment. However, the increase in peppermint concentration resulted in a masculine, exiting, and hard emotional response. As the concentration of peppermint increased, the odor intensity increased in a linearly. The amount of change (ΔSEF50 and ΔSEF90) in edge frequencies closely related to the activation and stress of the brain showed a positive correlation. Odor intensity has a stronger association with ΔSEF90, a stress-related brain wave indicator than with ΔSEF50, a brain activation-related indicator. In addition, both ΔSEF50 and ΔSEF90 showed a positive correlation with APIGF (feelrefreshing average preference index) and a negative correlation with APIAC (Active-Calm average preference) and APIAll (total average preference index). These findings indicate that (1) the correlation between odor intensity and stress and (2) the relationship between emotional and QEEG can be interpreted in terms of brain wave study.

The purpose of this paper is to identify preferred nail shapes by extension length and preference trends according to demographic characteristics when performing nail extension procedures in nail art. For this purpose, the subjects of the study were people in their 20s to 50s who had experience receiving nail care, and their preferences for hands that had undergone nail extension treatment in four nail shapes (round, square, oval, and arrowhead) were analyzed. In preference for nail shape, round was dominant regardless of extension length, oval and square were similar, and arrowhead shapes were low. However, preferences according to extension length were different depending on gender, age, occupation, and marital status. Women, younger age, unmarried, and regular nail care groups showed less preference for round nails and more diverse preferred nail shapes. These results suggest that preferred nail shapes vary depending on extension length and demographic characteristics, and can be used as very useful information by nail art designers when counseling customers.
Tunable 3D Agarose-Well to enhance the Structural Integrity of a Reconstructed Human Skin Equivalent

Reconstructed human skin equivalents are widely used in various application and their successful uses depend on the structural integrity. In this study, we hypothesized that an Agarose-Well improved structural integrity in reconstructed human skin equivalents. This study examined the effect of Agarose-Well invaded collagen and regulated hydrophobicity. The enhanced structural integrity of the reconstructed dermis layer, which is model skin, was dependent on the penetration of collagen in Agarose-Well. The Agarose-Well that possess various hydrophilic/hydrophobic balances would allow to produce reconstructed dermis layers with elastic modulus (E) between 6.8 ± 0.95 kPa and 20.9 ± 0.54 kPa. Ultimately, the results of this study will be highly useful to develop the reconstructed human skin equivalents.

There is increasing evidence that matrix stiffness and permeability modulates various phenotypic activities of cells surrounded by three-dimensional (3D) matrix in native tissue. This study presents an advanced biomaterial design strategy to introduce the hydrophobic microenvironments in a hydrogel for enhancing the quality of a collagen fiber formation. Hydrogels were made poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) with poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate (PPGMA) acting as hydrophobic polymer chain. The mass fraction of PPGMA increased to fine tune the dependency between elastic modulus (E) and swelling retio (Q) of the hydrogel and also provide the microenvrionments for integrating a dermal fibroblast-encapsulating collagen gel.
Tuning the hydrophobicity of a hydrogel by self-organization of polymer cross-linkers

The hydrogel has been studied for various applications including controlled drug delivery, tissue engineering, micro-scale actuators and microfluidic flow control. This study presents an advanced biomaterial design strategy to introduce the hydrophobic microenvironments in a hydrogel. We hypothesized that self-organization of polymers in a pre-polymer solution would allow us to control the mechanical properties and hydrophobicity of a hydrogel and thus improve the structural integrity of a hydrogel. Self-organization between polymer cross-linkers of varying molecular weight was examined to understand the mechanism by which hydrophobic polymers would be introduced in a hydrogel.

In this study, reconstructed human skin dermis layers with various mechanical stiffness were fabricated using an ‘Alginate-MA (AL-MA)’ as alginate-based cross-linker. Human skin dermis layers were reconstructed with collagen and various concentration of the AL-MA, which synthesized an alginate modified with methacrylate groups. AL-MA would allow to produce reconstructed dermis layers with elastic modulus (E) between 6.8 ± 0.95 kPa and 33.5 ± 1.45 kPa through Michael addition reaction with collagen fibers and ionic cross-linking. Overall, the results of this study will be highly useful to designing advanced reconstructed human skin equivalents.
