This article aims to examine and analyze the Korean-American writers' works in the 1980's, especially to find out their common themes; 'Korean tradition', 'Korean patriotism', and 'Koreanness'. There were two groups among Korean American writers in the 1980's. The first group consisted of Korean-American novelists and the second group consisted of Korean-American poets. The study attempts to examine the 'Korean tradition' in Clay Walls (1986) by Ronyoung Kim and the Korean patriotism in Dictee (1982) by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and in Man Sei! (1986) by Peter Hyun, and to examine 'Korean identity' through the Korean War in 1950 in Guilt Payment (1983) by Ty Pak. From the second group, the poets' group, the study attempts to examine 'Alienation' out of immigration society in America in Chungmi (1982) by Chung Mi Kim and 'Koreanness' in Picture Bride (1983) by Cathy Song and 'Korean identity' in Under Flag (1991) by Myung Mi Kim. In conclusion, the achievement of the Korean American writers in the 1980's, who mainly were of the first generation, was to help the blooming of what we call the "Korean American Renaissance Period" of the 1990's. It is widely recognized that they introduced Korean tradition, Korean history, and Korean patriotism to American readers, and that they encouraged other Korean-American writers and affected the Korean-American writings in the 1990's.
