Vol.0 No.56

This article examines the identity transformation of Koreans in Japan who are usually called “Zainichi” from the perspective of transnationalism. As of 2012, the population of Zainichi Koreans as registered foreigners is 530,421 accounted by Japanese government. This number is accounted for 26 percent of total foreign registrants in Japan. The present situation of Zainichi community is much more complex and various under the new environment of transnationalism. Each year nearly 6,000 people are naturalized as Japanese. In addition, the number of people called “daburu (double)”or “hahu (half)” who were born between Zainichi and Japanese are increasing. While other foreigners in Japan increase, the population of Zainichi Koreans has been declining every year for reasons such as naturalization or low birth rate. The percentage of total foreign registrants is also getting lower. Zainichi Koreans and their identities can not be understood and interpreted any longer based on nationalism between Korea and Japan. This concept based on a single national mythology acted as a powerful mechanism against the Japanese colonial rule and still remains as the core discourse to dominate Zainichi Korean community. Although the identity of human beings can be affected by a variety of factors such as education, family, region, home town and so on, the self-identity of Zainichi Koreans is easily perceived only based on their national or ethnic identity.

Vol.2 No.-

The Marshallian firm, which was organized at the factory level and confined its activity to a single industry and a single national economy, gave way to the modern corporation. The modern corporation is far cry from the Marshallian firm in both its vision and sphere of activity. This movement began in the 1920 and gathered its momentum after the Second World War. The characteristics of modern corporation consists in its global outlook and its transformation to the stage of multi-national and multi-industrial (conglomerate) enterprise. Multi-national corporation integrates one industry over many countries as in the automobile industry. On the other hand, conglomerate or multi-industrial enterprise integrates many industries over one country as in the textile industry. In this essary, I intended to examine many points in connection with the multi-national and conglomerate enterprises. These are as follows: the relationship between the rise of multi-national enterprise and the increasing direct investment of U.S.A. in Europe, the true nature of multinational enterprise, the process of multinati-onalisation of enterprise, the rise of C onglomerate mergers and governmental reactions, the reasons that give rise to conglomerate mergers, and their impacts on the modern capitalism.

The history of the Zainichi Korean Community in Japan dates back over 100 year with the start of the Japanese colonial occupation in 1910. During this period the Zainichi Korean community experienced many changes while undergoing various hardships and complications. These changes originated within the Zainichi Korean community with the change in generation and the relationship between the Zainichi Korean community and the motherland. The Zainichi Korean community, however, was most deeply affected by the surrounding Japanese society. Although the Japanese society is known to be a very closed one, Japan is expericencing the phenomenon of globalization. The Zainichi Korean community is directly and indirectly subject to the influence of these changes. For these reasons, we must reconsider relationship between the Zainichi Korean community and the Japanese society that is undergoing blobalization and multiculturalism. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the history of the Zainichi Korean community and its present and future in relation to the rapidly changing multiculture in Japan.

This paper examines the historical background of the formation of ‘Shin-Okubo Korea town’ in Tokyo, Japan, and reviews the social or academic implications of its transformation. The main contents of this paper are as follows. First, the history of the area where Shin-Okubo is located dates back to the Edo period. As a result, it was confirmed that this area was an ‘open’ space that was easy for foreigners to come in and settle down long before the Korea town was formed, and this characteristic became the historical background that facilitated the formation of the Korea town. Second, this paper emphasizes that Shin-Okubo Korea town is becoming an important hub for exchanges between Korea and Japan under the influence of the Korean Wave phenomenon. Amidst Korea-Japan relations, which are prone to crunch due to history and diplomacy, the community called Shin-Okubo plays a role as a barometer to gauge the grassroots cultural exchanges of the citizens of both countries. Third, Shin-Okubo can be pointed out that it is not staying in the ‘Korea town,’ but is changing into an ‘ethnic town’ where various cultures and ethnic groups come together. This paper also emphasizes that this is not a crisis of the disappearance of the Korea town in Shin-Okubo, but a possibility to evolve and be reborn as a new space where cultural ‘hybridity’ and ‘coexistence’ can be practiced.
