The goal of this study is to illustrate a course in Korean as a foreign culture pedagogy for undergraduate Korean students. In this study I will use the term culture to express the habits of a community and therefore the dynamic habits of a society(Hall, 2002). The main characteristics of this case study are two. The first one is that the course was theoretically based on culture shock theory, social distance theory and identity theory. The second is that the instructor of the course was not a Korean but a foreigner. The main goal of the course was to enable the Korean students to observe and understand Korean culture and society from the perspective of a foreigner. This case study illustrates, through the analysis of the instructor diary and two sets of written open-ended interviews with the students, how this goal was achieved.

Language teachers experience several emotions (Richards, 2020). Emotions, adaptive responses to events in the environment (Moors et al., 2013), influence teaching practices, professional identity, and wellbeing (Gkonou et al., 2020). Following Gregersen (2020), this contribution frames teacher emotions as a Complex Dynamic System (CDS), since emotions exist on different timescales, are part of interconnected systems, exist together with each other, and an indefinite number of variables can affect the system. Considering the challenges of investigating CDSs (MacIntyre et al., 2021), a holistic approach is needed to understand the dynamic and complexity of teacher emotions, which are numerous, vary across individuals, and fluctuate over time (Sulis et al., 2021). This contribution uses Q methodology, an approach well suited for investigating CDSs (MacIntyre et al., 2017), to intensively analyze single cases (Brown, 2019). This design, which has not been used yet in educational research (Lunderberg et al., 2020), allows answering the following questions: How do language teacher emotions fluctuate under the influence of different classroom events and how are emotions interconnected with each other? Five teachers of Korean as a foreign language from South Korean institutions sorted a set of 40 emotions under ten different conditions of instruction, each representing a different language classroom event. Sorts were factor-analyzed all together and by-teacher (Stenner & Stainton Rogers, 2004), and the results showed the dynamic and the complexity of teachers’ emotional responses in their interaction with the classroom environment. The contribution of this study to the field is twofold. From a theoretical perspective, it demonstrates the dynamic and complex relationship among multiple teachers’ emotions and how emotions are affected by classroom events. From a methodological perspective, it shows the applicability of the Q methodology intensive single case design to the study of emotions in language teaching.

Main factors of comprehension failure of a literary text by Korean as a Second Language Learners. Bilingual Research 51, 111-149. This paper aims at showing and analyzing the main factors that cause comprehension failure during the reading of a literary text by Korean as a Second Language Learners. In order to achieve this goal, thinking-out-aloud protocol has been choose as data gathering method. 17 high level Korean as a second foreign language learners verbalized aloud their thoughts while completing the reading task of 4 different literary texts, two poems and two extracts from novels. The data gathering process produced a total of 67 verbalized protocols that have been successively analyzed through a qualitative approach. The researchers coded independently each protocol and then compared the coding results, repeating this independent coding/comparison process until a common coding system was agreed. The coding system was then tested separately by both researchers. Result of the coding system are 6 categories where the main factors of comprehension failure of a literary text can be divided into. Drawing on previous research literature, each factor is analyzed and causes of failure comprehension are investigated. (Korea University, Sogang University)
