We examined correlations of the density of fish farms with the distributions of indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli, fecal streptococci) and a bacterial fish pathogen (Streptococcus parauberis) off the coastline of Jeju Island. Seawater samples were collected at four coastal sites on the Island [Aewol (control), Gujwa, Pyoseon and Daejeong] in June, August and October 2016. The indicator bacteria were generally more frequently isolated from samples taken in August when water temperatures and human activities on nearby beaches were highest. Although fish farms were least common at Daejeong, the numbers of isolated fecal indicator bacteria were highest in the seawater and effluent water collected from this site. Hence, fish farms were not likely major contributors of indicator bacteria at Daejeong. We found discrepancies between the isolated bacterial counts and the predicted bacterial copy numbers deduced from our qPCR results, indicating that this pathogen may exist in a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state in seawater. Thus, livestock wastewater and chemical fertilizer loading off Jeju Island may negatively impact seawater quality more than the effluent released from fish farms does.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear strength of high strength reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and beam section size. A total of twelve specimens were tested and designed concrete compressive strength is 50 MPa. The main variables are shear reinforcement ratio and beam section size fixed with shear span to depth ratio (a/d = 2.5), the tensile reinforcement ratio (ρ = 0.013) and width to depth ratio (h/b = 1.5). The test specimens were divided into three series of H1 (225×338 mm), H2 (270×405 mm) and H3 (315×473mm) respectively. The experimental results show that specimens represent various failure modes such as diagonal tensile failure (DTF), bond failure (BF), shear compression failure (SCF) and flexural compression failure (FCF). In the H1 series, the shear strength increased by 92.0%, 94.1% and 128.4% respectively as the shear reinforcement ratio increased, 103.8%, 138% and 143% respectively in the H2 series, 131.1%, 168.7% and 151.7% respectively in the H3 series. The decreasing rate of shear strength increased as the beam’s effective width increased, which is considered to be due to the size effect. Then, it is shown that the decreasing rate of shear strength increases as d/s increases, and it can be seen that the effect of the size effect increases as the spacing between shear reinforcing bars decreases. As compared to the standard and the proposed equations, theoretical values by proposed equation of Zsutty, Bazant, and Lee has compared relatively well with experimental values.

As an effort to explore fungal diversity, fungal survey was undertaken in 2018 in Jangheung, Korea. For the survey, medicinal plant leaves were sampled from Selaginella tamariscina, Serratula coronata ssp. insularis, Scutellaria baicalensis, Scrophularia buergeriana and subjected to fungal isolation. Four unrecorded fungal species, Paraboeremia selaginellae, Colletotrichum camelliae, Alternaria eichhorniae, and Phomopsis capsici were obtained from the survey. This study described their morphological characteristics including colony features formed on media, light microscopic images and molecular characteristics of nucleotide sequences of the ITS and 28S rDNA regions.

Spasmodic torticollis is a local dystonia of cervical muscles, involuntary hyperkinesia, presenting tonic or clonic movement of head. Pathophysiologic mechanism is not certain. Many managements of spasmodic torticollis have been attempted to solve the problem, but it is thought that there is nothing original except respectively causative treatments. We had experienced a patient of spasmodic torticollis, whose symptom was improved with radio-frequency neurotomy of cervical dorsal ramus. We thought that radio-frequency neurotomy of cervical dorsal ramus might be effective treament for some selective patients with spasmodic torticollis. It was the 1st attempt to treat spasmodic torticollis with radio-frequency neurotomy targeting cervical dorsal ramus.

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of various factors on the outcome of repeated lumbar spine surgery. Forty-three patients were enroled in this study. Mean follow-up duration was 39.5±2.2 months(range 7∼68months). Age,sex,smoking, symptom duration, symptom-free interval after operation,location of principal symptom, operative finding, existence of trauma after first operation, neuropsychiatric disorder and bone marrow density were the suspected prognostic factors of repeated lumbar spine surgery. Fisher's exact test were used for statistical evalution. 77% of the patients were satisfied with the result of reoperation. The number of operation, the existence of trauma after initial operation and location of principal symptom were the factors having significant influence on the result. Investigation of the repeated lumbar spine surgery cases with the knowledge of prognostic factors would be helpful for decision making in failed back surgery syndrome.
