Multiculturalism has not been abandoned in Canada and Australia, although some reshaping of policies has occurred also in those countries. It is rather clear that some reconsideration is in order. Countries seem to struggle with the difficulty to reconcile identity and diversity, unity and plurality. The reconsideration cannot be limited to the assessment of the actual implementation of multicultural policies in some states but must be expanded to the social science analysis of the incorporation of migrants and the objective to achieve social cohesion. In this paper I will first present the major different models of migrant incorporation, which respond to the objective of maximizing social cohesion. I will then examine the different types of multiculturalism and their limitations. Finally, I will indicate in what way intercultural dialogue can contribute to social cohesion in a pluralist society, without replicating the multicultural limitations. However, intercultural dialogue is to be considered a frame of mind and pedagogy, rather than a state program with specific policies.
