Vol.- No.77
This paper investigates the impact of language model artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT and GPT-3, on literature and its potential implications for literary creation, criticism, education, and the cultural industry as a whole. The goal of this research is to explore the future of AI-generated literature. Throughout this study, we employ various AI technologies, providing examples of literature and criticism produced by language model AI, while discussing their significance. In Chapter 2, we examine the technical characteristics and limitations of language model AI, assessing how current AI technology can be utilized in literature through various case studies, and exploring its potential and constraints. In Chapter 3, we extrapolate and predict changes in AI literature through science fiction texts that envision the future of AI-generated literature. We investigate the potential for a new era of co-creation, in which AI and humans collaborate to produce innovative literary forms. This paper presents a comprehensive understanding and critical examination of the current state and future of AI literature. We contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the role of AI in literature and the implications of AI-generated literature for the literary industry and society at large. Furthermore, we provide insights into the potential of AI to revolutionize the way literature is produced, received, understood, critiqued, and taught. Additionally, this paper addresses the ethical and social impacts of AI literature, including the possibility of AI-generated literature replacing human literature and its significance as posthuman literature.
Vol.20 No.2
This research aims to estimate the potential of interdisciplinary education that traverses the discipline of natural science, computer technology, literature and social studies. Besides, it attempts to integrate various technologies of 4th industrial revolution with interdisciplinary studies, and to examine the ways of developing, sharing and spreading educational methods and contents that may be applied to the fields of education. More specifically, this research suggests three models of interdisciplinary education studies, as well as overall framing of connection between the three models. The first model deals with technology based interdisciplinary education where various educational methods integrated with 4th industrial revolution technology can be applied. Meanwhile the second model deals with Jeju local based interdisciplinary education which is focused on educating global citizenship, excavating examples of local based interdisciplinary studies, and applying them to local community. Finally, the third model deals with narrative culture based interdisciplinary education that aims to develop interdisciplinary teaching methods and educational contents that traverse disciplines of ‘science and literature’, ‘literature and social studies’, and ‘local culture and literary/social studies.’

The promise of ChatGPT, a Large Language Model AI, has led to both excitement and concern about its educational applications. In particular, many educators fear that students will use AI to generate and submit written assignments, leading to the coining of the phrase “AIgiarism”. The goal is to build “AI-immunity,” which makes it harder for AI to take over assignments, while still ensuring educational effectiveness. However, it is difficult to distinguish AI use from AI plagiarism. Rather, a shift in education is required through active understanding and utilization of AI. To this end, the design direction of teaching and learning for the redesign of education was presented by overcoming the problem of writing plagiarism using ChatGPT. It is expected that it will be a basic study to minimize risks and maximize potential benefits in the educational use of ChatGPT in the future.
Comparative Korean Studies Vol.30 No.1
Vol.54 No.-
Nick Bostrom is concerned that the “existential risks” of the modern world are also increasing with technological advances. He particularly emphasizes the dangers of superintelligence. Max Tegmark is also working on threats to artificial intelligence. Their AI discourse depends on the speculative imagination and scenarios of science fiction (SF). The apocalyptic narrative of AI is part of a posthuman culture in which the boundary between scientific fact and fictional imagination has become meaningless. This interaction and intersection between science and fiction can be captured with the terms “science/fiction” and “scientifictive texts.” Expectations, optimism, anxiety, and fear about AI are greatly influenced by the dramatic narratives of popular sci-fi. It is highly likely that real-world AI technologies and scenarios will be misled by interesting stories rather than rational reasoning. Due to these “narrative biases,” the actual scenario for AI is highly dependent on SF and at the same time requires a skeptical view. The technological singularity proposed by SF writer Vernor Vinge has prospered the SF subgenre called singularity SF. Furthermore, the singularity has had a great impact on technology and industry, as well as academics and education, as in the case of Ray Kurzweil. Modern technoscience and myth coexist in this discourse. High-tech companies can also be seen as followers of the singularity. AI and singularity narratives operate within the logic of money and power, as well as technological and cultural contexts. Singularity narratives can leave you indifferent to the real problems of AI, so critical analysis is required.
Vol.- No.68
“Posthuman” means a future human being who can no longer be called a human because major abilities exceeds the current standards and limitations. This concept re-adjusts and includes the phases and boundaries of other non-human beings. Thus, the traditional view of the human world and the human image can no longer be maintained. Posthumanism is a variety of humanities / criticism discourses on the future of human beings and human beings after human changed according to the development of science and technology. Critical posthumanism is criticized at the same time as it inherits humanism. It aims to diversify or renew modern human views, to avoid one-sided technology optimism or fear, and to reflect on it. Posthumanism has been embodied through the rapid development of advanced science and technology and the influence of postmodernism. However, posthumanism differs from postmodernism in that it is an ideology of the era that experiences the loss and fall of the modern “human” and humanism as a fact. Posthumanism is also an interdisciplinary discourse in the era when the boundaries between humanities and science have been broken down under new technological and cultural conditions, and today it is also related to 'post-humanities' and the changes of universities. SF(Science Fiction) is a “perfect posthuman genre.” It forms a popular image, emotion, and ideological attitude about science and technology and posthuman. That is why (critical) posthumanist criticism must actively intervene in SF. SF movies and novels are based on the knowledge and expectation of science and technology, and (popular) science writing also expands the image and ideology of posthumanity through narrative imagination, and even finally realizes it. “Since the era itself is regarded as SF,” analysis and criticism of SF are required to understand the posthuman society and culture.
Vol.30 No.1
The severity of the climate crisis has led to the academic proliferation of Anthropocene discourse. The concept of “Anthropocene fiction” has also emerged as a response to climate change. The Anthropocene can be perceived as a nomenclature and a contest of narratives around understanding and responding to reality. In literary studies, the establishment and practice of “anthropocene criticism” is called for. This paper critically analyzes Korean science fiction narratives that address the issues of climate crisis and artificial intelligence together from the perspective of climate fiction (Cli-Fi). James Lovelock, a proponent of the Gaia theory, is optimistic that the climate crisis will be solved by AI and calls it “the Novacene.” Many movies and novels also depict AI solving the climate crisis. So-yeon Kim and Hae-yeon Yoon's science fiction short stories “Gaia's Choice” and “Capsule for One” are narratives that delegate political power to AI as a "Green Leviathan" in the face of climate disaster. Ji-hong Park's sf comic “HOTEL, SINCE 2079” is a retrospective of the restoration process after human extinction by a non-human narrator, AI. Samsung Electronics' web drama Whale Dust is optimistic that AI technology will save the day in an era of gloomy climate disasters. This paper critiques the dangers of such techno-solutionist imaginaries of the climate crisis. Climate crisis and AI narratives have strong narrative and rhetorical power (effect) because they allow us to imagine narratives of global catastrophe and salvation. This paper emphasizes that climate crisis and AI narratives are about the transformation of our future.
