The purpose of this paper is to provide a basis of approach and new possibilities of data in the context of the convergence of science and art by analyzing the aspects of expression in the recent trend of art that utilizes data. To this end, this paper discusses the relationship of science and art and ways and characteristics of their convergence, and suggests various forms and characteristics of data-visualization art and its possibilities and limitations. First of all, this paper deals with ways of relating art and science in terms of the background of data-visualization art, and confirms their resemblance. Formal characteristics of approaching science as the theme of modern art can be categorized in three ways, based on which the four aspects-using images, applying method and tool, applying objective data, and providing experimental data-are analyzed. Through such analysis, it is known that the expressions of data-visualization art reflect the perspective of the contemporary society and culture, expand recognition and sensation, and display its power of persuasion through objective data. Furthermore, it is discovered that as it produces experimental data, the result of art can be transformed into the object of scientific research. After classifying various aspects of the expression of art that utilizes data-visualization in the context of the convergence of science and art and dealing with its artistic characteristics, this paper ascertains open possibilities of data as the materials of art. Based on those possibilities, the aspects of the expression of art can be expanded, and further interdisciplinary researches are expected to be done. 본 연구의 목적은 최근 늘고 있는 데이터를 이용한 예술의 표현양상에 대한 분석을 통해서 과학과 예술의 융합이라는 맥락에서 데이터가 지니는 새로운 가능성과 접근방식의 토대를 제공하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 과학과 예술의 관계와 융합하는 방식 및 특성에 대해 논하고, 데이터 시각화 예술의 다양한 형식과 특징은 물론 한계와 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 먼저 데이터 시각화의 양상의 배경으로서 예술과 과학이 관계 맺는 방식을 살펴보고 서로의 공통점을 확인하였다. 현대 예술의 주제로서 과학에 접근하는 형식적 특징은 세 가지로 정리할 수 있었으며, 이를 바탕으로 데이터 시각화의 표현양상을 이미지의 사용, 방법 및 도구의 활용, 객관적 데이터의 활용, 실험적 데이터 제시의 네 가지 양상으로 나누어 분석하였다. 분석을 통해 데이터 시각화의 예술적 표현이 동시대의 사회 문화적 관점을 반영하는 것은 물론 인식과 감각을 확장하며, 객관적 데이터를 통해 설득력을 발휘한다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 실험적인 데이터의 제시를 통해서 예술적 결과가 과학의 연구 대상으로 발전될 가능성을 발견하였다. 본 연구를 통해 과학과 예술의 융합 맥락에서 데이터 시각화를 이용한 예술의 다채로운 표현양상을 정리함과 동시에 예술적 특징을 고찰한 결과 예술의 재료로서의 데이터의 가능성을 확인하였다. 따라서 향후 이를 기반으로 학제간 협조를 통한 연구와 표현양상의 확장이 기대된다.

텍스타일은 오랫동안 우리의 생활과 밀접하게 관련되어 지속적으로 발전해왔으며, 다양한 예술적 표현의 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 최근에는 과학기술과의 접목을 통한 신소재의 개발과 3D 프린팅, 전자섬유(E-textile) 등에 대한 관심과 연구가 끊이지 않고 있다. 이를 기반으로 의류에서 인테리어에 이르는 다채로운 제품개발은 물론 예술, 건축으로까지 그 표현의 영역을 확장하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 텍스타일 작품들의 공간표현을 연구함으로써 텍스타일을 이용한 다양한 표현의 가능성을 모색하고 발전을 위한 토대를 제공하는 것으로 투명성에 대한 논의를 중심으로 전개하였다. 투명성에 대한 논의는 1940년경 건축분야에서 시작되어 공예나 회화, 디자인으로 파생됐다. 투명성의 개념은 시각적 패러다임의 변화에 따라서 변화되고 확장되었는데, 시지각적으로 경험되는 실제적 투명성의 개념과 공간과 시간의 개념을 포함하는 현상적 투명성, 심리적 인식론적 의미를 담은 관념적인 투명성으로 구분 짓는 것이 일반적이다. 텍스타일은 제직과정에서 나타나는 그 구조적 특징에 의해서 투명성을 지니는데, 이때 빛의 투과와 반사가 함께 이루어지기 때문에 가변적이고, 양면적인 반투명(translucency)에 가까운 특징을 지닌다. 따라서 여러 투명성의 개념과 특징이 복합적으로 나타나게 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 표현양상을 재료의 투명성, 다공성의 구조, 레이어(layer)의 중첩이라는 세 가지 카테고리(category)로 나누어 공간에서 표현되는 투명성을 중심으로 고찰함으로써 텍스타일을 사용한 예술적 표현의 가능성을 탐구하였다. 또한 텍스타일과 과학기술의 접목이 투명성의 표현에 미치는 영향을 확인하고 공간표현의 주된 양상들을 정리함으로써 앞으로의 텍스타일을 이용한 표현의 발전 방향을 모색하고 및 다채로운 논의의 기틀을 마련할 수 있기를 기대한다. Textile has continuously developed in a close relationship to the lives of human beings for a long time, and it contains potentialities for various artistic expressions. Recently, researches on the creation of new materials based on scientific technologies, 3D printings, or E-textile have continued to be done with great interests. In this context, textile has enlarged its realm of expression from various product development such as clothing and interior to art and architect. As it studies the spatial expressions of some works of textile, this paper deals with a possibility of creating artistic expressions by using textile and aims to provide a basis for its development centering on the discussion on transparency. Discussions on transparency started in 1940s from the area of architecture and were extended to the areas of industrial art, fine art, and design. The concept of transparency has developed and extended as visual paradigms change, and going beyond the concept of transparency centered on visual-cognitive experiences, it is widely accepted to divided into the phenomenal transparency that encompasses time and space and the idealistic transparency that includes the meaning of psychological epistemology. Textile has the quality of transparency because of its structural characteristic in the process of production, and since both the penetration and the reflection of light happen at the same time, textile comes to have a property that is almost both-sided translucency. Therefore, various concepts and characteristics of transparency emerge in a complex manner. This paper, centering on the concept of transparency in space, deals with three categories, namely the transparency of materials, the structure of porosity, and the overlap of layers, thereby investigating textile’s potentialities for artistic expressions. As it focuses on the effect of the integration of textile and scientific technologies on the expression of transparency and classifies some key aspects of spatial expression, this paper searches for a direction of development of art using textile and hopes to lay a foundation for further discussions.
