In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of the evaporative transpiration cooled system is analytically investigated considering the occurrence of the two-phase evaporation zone. Under the condition of the external heat input, analytical solutions of the three regions (i.e., vapor, liquid and two-phase evaporation zone) are respectively obtained using the matching conditions for the steady-state problem where properties are constant. As results, the length of the evaporation zone increases with increasing heat input and with decreasing mass flow rate. It also increases with increasing particle size, system porosity, thermal conductivity of material, inlet temperature and latent heat of coolant. The position of the lower interface of the evaporation zone have a lot of efforts on the evaporation zone length, the position of the upper interface penetrates deeper into the porous layer with lower thermal conductivity of porous material, higher system porosity and larger particle size.

Background/Aims: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a widely used method for providing nutritional support for patients who require prolonged tubal feeding. As survival times of PEG inserted patients increase, PEG related complications are also increasing. For this reason, we decided to review complications related to PEG. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted for patients who received PEG placement between January 2004 and March 2013 in our hospital. Of the total 331 cases of PEG placement, 131 cases of PEG exchanges were excluded and a total of 200 cases were included in our review. We reviewed the baseline characteristics of all PEG inserted patients and complications related to PEG insertion. Results: Complications related to PEG developed in 45 of 200 patients (22.5%). Peristomal infection occurred in 22 patients (11.0%) and buried bumper syndrome occurred in 10 patients (5.0%). Other complications that occurred in 13 patients were hemorrhage (3.0%), leakage (1.0%), aspiration pneumonia (1.0%), ileus (0.5%), necrotizing fasciitis (0.5%) and gastro-colo-cutaneous fistula (0.5%). The characteristics according to age, gender, procedure place and underlying disease were not different between the complication group and non complication group. The onset time to complication was significantly different between the buried bumper syndrome group and the other complication groups (P=0.035). Conclusions: Peristomal infection was the most common complication of PEG in our hospital. Late peristomal infection and buried bumper syndrome occurred more often than previous studies. Buried bumper syndrome was more likely to occur in later time compared with the other complications.

The analysis of the evaporative heat transfer in the inclined porous layer (0.deg.<.theta.<90.deg.) is made by using capillary model. The length of the evaporation zone is obtained numerically by integrating the differential equation using a Runge-Kutta algorithm. As a result, the length of the evaporation zone is inverse proportional to the dimensionless number, E(=Re*.phi./cos.theta.) representing the evaporation intensity, and the relationship of these parameters shows linear in the log graph.

The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of conjugate forced and natural convection in the triple-glazed airflow window, where the outer air passes through a space contrived between the interior and exterior window panes, were studied numerically by a finite volume method for the elliptic form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The investigation focused on the influence of window geometry, ventilastion rate and solar energy on the temperature, velocity distribution and thermal performance of the airflow window. The comparison between the triple-glazed airflow window and the enclosed triple-glazed window was also made to evaluate the effect of buoyancy upon which the thermal performance of the window depended.
