      • Naturalism and Dreiser

김초훈 단국대학교 영어영문학회 2002 Athenaeum Vol.8 No.-

An investigation of naturalism entails an investigation of its historical moment s the condition of its production and as the source of discourses embedded within the works. It is a way of imagining the world and the relation of the self to the world, a way of making sense and making narrative out of the comforts and discomforts of the historical moment. Characteristic of naturalism, and within literary forms it uniquely distinguishes that genre. Naturalism is not a fashionable genre; the efflorescence of critical publication by American academics has produced only a relatively small body of work dealing with this group of writers. American naturalism was formed in the formative period of our own time. Naturalism in the novel as elsewhere mingles with many other genres, and many of the elements of naturalism are also self-consciously examined within it self.

      • James Joyce 작품『율리시즈』의 해체론적 접근

김초훈 단국대학교 영어영문학회 2000 Athenaeum Vol.6 No.-

Derrida argues that phonocentrism-logocentrism relates to centrism itself-the human desire to posit a 'central' presence at beginning and end. He states that it is this hierarchized oppositions. The superior term in these oppositions belongs to presence and the logos, the inferior serves to define its status and mark, a fall. The oppositions between intelligible and sensible, soul and body seem to have lasted out 'the history of Western philosophy', bequeathing their burden to modern linguistics with its opposition between meaning and word. We say that deconstructive theory it the optimal literary critical method to read the works of James Joyce. We can meet the reality of the structualist and deconstruction concerned with our circumstances and lives through the work of Ulysses. They result in the human's joyfulness and sadness in one's life. It is that Derrida deconstructs the system and the hierarchy of human relations. Therefore, Joyce pursued the equality among religions, citizens, good and devil, strong and week factors of human through this literary works.

      • Feminist Theories

김초훈 단국대학교 영어영문학회 2001 Athenaeum Vol.7 No.-

Women writers and woman readers have always had to work 'against the grain'. Feminist criticism, in all its many and various manifestation, has also attempted to free itself from naturalized patriarchal notions of the literary and the literary-critical. Feminists have been at pains to expose the fraudulent objectivity of male science, such as Freud's theory of female sexual development. Feminism in general, of course, has a long political history. It dates back to 1960s. Feminist criticism of the earlier period is more a reflex of 'first-wave' preoccupations than a fully fledged theoretical discourse of its own. Woolf, Moi argues, rejected only that type of feminism which was simply an inverted male chauvinism, and also showed great awareness of the distinctness of women's writing. A number of French feminists have argued that female sexuality is a subterranean and unknown entity which can nevertheless represent itself in literary writing. What the present theories attempt, then, - while sharply conscious of the charge of ethnocentricity - is an overview of predominantly while, European and North American feminist theories from the pre-1960s so-called 'first-wave' critics through to the substantive achievements of the 'second-wave' theories of the 1960s onwards.
