The finite element method is used to simulate propagation of laser-generated ultrasounds and interaction with surface breaking cracks in elastic media. The laser line source focused on the surface of semi-infinite medium is modeled as a transient thermal and elastic finite element using ANSYS code. The thermoelastic finite element model is found to produce correct behavior for generated longitudinal, shear and surface waves. The interaction of surface waves with surface breaking cracks (2-D machined slot) is examined when the laser source is scanned over defected samples. The scanning laser line source(SLLS) is found to cause a large amplitude change of reflected waves near crack, and the crack whose depth is one order lower than the wavelength can be detected from this change.
