A rare case of multiple supratentorial and infratentorial hemangioblastomas in a 50-year old man is presented. There were neither manifestations of visceral tumors nor familial history. The two tumors were totally removed in two sessions and the diagnosis in both tumors were hemangioblastomas.

Sera from 95 infertile males males were assayed for antisperm antibodies using the Tray Agglutination Test(TAT) and indirect Immunobead Test(IBT). The correlation between antisperm antibodies and seminal analysis in infertile men was evaluated, and the TAT was compared with new indirect IBT. The results were obtained as follows. 1. Positive rate for antisperm antibodies was high in azoospermia, oligoasthenospermia, pyo-spermia, in order, Especially in obstructive azoospermia, the rate was the highest in both methods 2. Positive rates for antisperm antibodies in TAT was higher than indirect IBT. 3. Among the isotypes of the immunoglobulins, IgG were most prevalent. IgG and IgA were bound predominantly to the head and IgM predominantly to the tail up.

아산호 습지에서 관속식물의 군집 구조와 생산성 및 영양염류의 흡수

The flora, distribution area, vegetation structure, annual net primary production, and nutrient uptake of the vascular hydrophytes, hygrophytes and mesophytes were investigated in the wetlands of the Asan-Lake, Chungchongnam-do and Kyonggi-do, Korea from March to October in 1997 to reveal the correlation between the plant community and the lake environment. The flora was composed of 38 families, 89 genera, 106 species, 14 varieties or total 120 kinds of the vascular plants. The life from of the hydrophytes were classified as 14 kinds of emergent plants, 5 kinds of submerged plants, and 4 kinds of free-floating plants, respectively. The number of species was various to 4 ∼85 kinds in each site. The dominant species was Zizania latifolia, and the importance values of Zizania latifolia, Typha orientalis, Phragmites communis, and Spirodela polyrhiza were 39.58, 14.90, 13.97, and 7.64, respectively. The distribution area of the emergent hydrophytes, hygrophytes, and mesophytes was 49.3 ㏊ (90.5%), and free-floating plants was 5.2 ㏊ (9.5%), whereas the floating-leaved and submersed plants were rare. Annual net production of the emergent hydrophytes, hygrophytes, and mesophytes was 547.9 ton D.W./yr (98%), and those of the free-floating plants was 10.5 ton D.W./yr (2%), and 558.4 ton D.W./yr in the whole lake ecosystem. The total uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by the vascular plants was 7,099 and 1,891 ㎏/yr in the whole lake ecosystem.

압축코팅법에 의한 3단계 약물방출형 지속성제제의 제조 및 용출특성

A novel oral controlled release tablet which may offer more uniform drug level in the body than simple zero-order was developed. The tablet is composed of three layers; outer film layer, middle part compression-coated hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) matrix layer, and inner core layer. Each layer contains nicardipine HCl as a model drug. In vitro dissolution test showed that the tablet released the drug in clear three steps; a rapid initial release, followed by a constant rate of release, and then a second phase of fast release of drug. The dissolution characteristics could be modified easily by changing the grade of HPMC, thickness of matrix layer, content of methylcellulose in matrix layer, content of active ingredient in each layer. The pH of dissolution medium did not affect the release profile. This three-step release system is expected to raise the blood concentration rapidly to effective level and to maintain effective blood level longer than simple slow-release systems.

This study aims to reread “Araby,” the third story of James Joyce`s Dubliners, in the light of Mikhail Bakhtin`s concept of “Chronotope,” invoked from Einstein`s Theory of Relativity to arrange the development of European novel from the ancient Greek and Medieval chivalric romances, and prose works with polyphony. From the chronotopic viewpoint, the story seems to develop in three stages such as “The end of the monologic epic” presenting the death of a priest, a symbol of authority, corruption and paralysis in Dublin, “The era of romances” focusing on a boy`s clandestine romance following the chronotope of Greek and Medieval romances, and finally “The era of the polyphonic novel,” in which the boy`s discourse, after being transferred from the chronotope of Araby as a fantasy to that of the real world, conflicts with plenty of hostile counterparts around him, manifesting the characteristics of a polyphonic novel, in which the narrator plunges into the narrative, sometimes parodying and ridiculing his young self by means of a disillusioning epiphany. As such, the concept of the chronotope applied to the interpretation of a short story may help the reader find a specific order and significance in the story and make more systematical approaches to the work through diverse themes such as politics, psychology and philosophy.

『율리시스』의 두 개의 도입부와 그 서사적 함의

This study aims to have a comparative analysis on the two beginnings of James Joyce’s Ulysses and examine the narrative implications of the different mornings opened by the two main protagonists. Unlike the novels before modernism that begin their stories in as much detail as possible, the modernist novels mostly start with casual beginnings, presenting the readers with extremely natural daily routines of a protagonist. However, such deceptively casual beginnings actually hide quite a few complicated meanings in them. Thus what ‘Telemachus’ and ‘Calypso’ as the two beginnings of Ulysses hide seems to be the predicament and agony of the Celtic Irish and the diasporic Jew. In short, Joyce has presented the different ways of responding to the predicaments by Stephen, who is surrounded by the ‘usurpers,’ threatening to deprive him of what he has, and by Bloom as a double-other, who is going through ceaseless contempt and alienation in the land of ‘the other.’ Doing so, the author presents the reader with a wide river to cross between the bank of ‘egotism’ and ‘egoism’ based on the worldview of ‘I-It’ relationship and that of ‘dialogue’ and ‘altruism’ based on the spirit of ‘I-You.’

Tuesdays with Morrie, which is composed of fourteen discussions between Mitch Albom, a sports reporter and Morrie Schartz, a retired professor dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a moving novel based on fact, and it helps a reader reconsider the significance of life and death. As a literary text, this book comprises diverse narratives such as everyday conversations, authorial narratives, news reports and broadcasting comments, diary entries and lectures, which are employed to weave dialogical narrative structures expressing the tensions between the past and the present, spirit and material, sense and reason, the interior and the exterior of human consciousness, and the languages and psyche of Morrie, Mitch and other characters. Such characteristics as a literary text also leads a reader to the ethics in the book, which can be compared with some aphorisms of the ancient Chinese ethical philosophy-benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, and virtue, for example. For, as we read the memoirs of an old professor, who has lived in the center of the world culture and history as an intellectual, being reminiscent of his life so far, considering others through the mirror of his own life, and trying to give lessons about the future state of the world and its culture, we can clearly realize that it cannot be confined to a mere personal memoir. In brief, in his aphorisms that he has uttered during the discussions with his former pupil, Mitch Albom for fourteen weeks, Morrie asserts that people in contemporary society should be able to control themselves among all the positive and negative elements in the present world, recover the mutual relationships between Self and Other based on understanding and true love, and then pursue a new world, in which both Self and Other can exist and prosper together. And his lesson is not different from the teachings of ancient Chinese philosophers, emphasizing the self-sacrifice to preserve the virtue complete(殺身成仁)
