This study has been carried out to determine the effect of fasting on endurance, blood glucose, PH, Hb and Ht in rats. The subjects were 42 male Sprague -Dawley rats weighing 251.22 ± 41.96g (M±SD). The rats were divided into three groups ; control group (C) fed ad libitum, fasting group (F) fasted for four days, and recovery group (R) recovering for seven days after four - day fast. And each group was again divided into rest group and swim group on the last experimental day. There was no significant difference in the mean body weights of the six groups ( p<0.05 ). Blood was drawn from the three groups at rest, front the other swim groups just after swimming to exhaustion. The water temperature was 19℃. One -way ANOVA was availed to analyze the differences of all data reported as means ±SD with significance set at 0.01 or 0.05. The results of this experiment are as follow ; 1) In body weight after four- day fasting, fasting group had a 17.7% reduction and recovery group had a 19.9% reduction. 2) Swimming times to exhaustion were 40.6 ± 13.4 min in C, 129.7±30.8min in F and 59.4±19.8min in R. And there was a significant difference in swimming times of each group.(p<0.01) F-group seemed to use more FFA as fuel during swimming than C-group. So F-group was considered to swim about three times longer than C-group. Since F-group was able to continue swimming even when blood glucose had dropped to levels much lower than those of C-group, it seems unlikely that blood glucose level is a factor in causing exhaustion. 3) Blood glucose concentrations at rest of each group were 139.41±21.6 mg/100㎖ in C, 88.3 ± 7.3 mg/100㎖ in F and 121.0 ±17.0mg/100㎖ in R. So they showed a significant difference ( p< 0.01). But those at swimming to exhaustion were 123.2 ± 42.8mg/100㎖ in C, 80.8± 15.4mg/100㎖ in F and 105.7 ± 27.4mg/100 ㎖ in R, which showed no significant difference (p<0.05). 4) No significant difference in PH values were observed for the three groups at rest, and at exhaustion, (p<0.05). But PH changes of each group between at rest and at exhaustion indicated significant differences (p<0.01). PH changes between at rest and at exhaustion of lasting group were decreased more than those of control group. 5) Hb concentrations at rest showed 13.22 ± 0.70g/100㎖ for C, 15.28 ± 0.048g/100㎖ for F and 13.22 ± 0.78g/100㎖ for R. And those at all - out showed 12.44 ± 0.91g/100㎖ for C, 16.04 ± 1.13g/100㎖ for F and 14.40 ± 1.53g/100㎖ for R. Therefore Hb levels at both rest and all - out showed significant differences (p<0.01). 6) At rest Ht values indicated 39.7 ± 2.1 in C, 46.4 ± 1.5 in F and 38.4 ± 14.3 in R. And at swimming they were 37.4 ±i 4.3 in C, 48.2 ± 3.5 in F and 43.0 ± 4.5 in R. So significant differences were showed in Ht levels at both rest and swimming (p<0.01).
