Vol.18 No.1

This essay purports to examine Andrew Marvell's Upon Appleton House as a Puritan topographical poem. Ben Jonson's To Penshurst idealizes the figure of a monarch, and makes him a living embodiment of justice and hospitality. In contrast, Marvell wants to attack the absolutist ideology of Jonson's poem and establish the Puritan Nun Appleton house of Thomas Fairfax as a model for an ideal society. Marvell continues the traditional topographical method of praising a lord by praising the style of his house, but recognizes the absolutist assumptions behind Jonson's topographical poetry. Therefore he revises it in a Puritan direction in Upon Appleton House. Marvell views Fairfax's country house as the ideal Puritan world, whereas the royalist poems make the country house embody absolutist ideology. He criticizes the royalist poems by making Nun Appleton embody Puritan virtues and portraying Fairfax as a model of Puritan heroism. The historical facts about Nun Appleton imply that the transformation of England from the Catholic society to the Puritan one is historically necessary. In this context it seems that the principles of ideal community lie not in Roman Catholicism nor the Levellers, but the moderate Puritan world. When the poet makes a visit to the woods around the house, he finds that the tallest oak is felled by an woodpecker. This description suggests that because the oak stands for the Stuart monarchy, an ideal form of government is a republic, not the monarchy with strict hierarchy and kingly prerogative. In the stanzas concerned with the appearance of Mary Fairfax Marvell implies that Mary is a symbol of a figure who can restore the paradise-state from which England has banished itself and hopes that Mary will diffuse Puritan social values outwards through society while transmitting them to the future. In the last stanzas Nun Appleton is seen to be a map to paradise. Yet the world outside the house seems chaotic. In conclusion, Marvell rewrites the topographical poem politically and portrays an ideal society as the Puritan world in which English people carry out Puritan virtues. We can say in this poem that Marvell celebrates Puritan virtues and a republic as his religious and political ideals.

Vol.17 No.1

Soo KimThis article aims to read Pope's "To Augustus" as political satire that attacks George II and Walpole's government. This poem was written to oppose George's pro-Whig policy and Walpole's corrupt government.Pope thought that Walpole backed up the moneyed class, denied the landed class their rights in governing the country, and ruled England by means of bribery and corrupt policy. George II was thought to encourage Walpole's corrupt policies instead of playing the role of a unified monarch. In "To Augustus", therefore, Pope dared to point the rapier of ironic ridicule against the King. Pope employed Horace's Augustus as an example of monarch who became the norm of political leadership and patronized literature wisely, and by means of this example he judged George. The norm of Augustus deepened and validated the irony Pope directed at George. By writing this political satire, Pope wanted to be instrumental to collapsing both George's political power and Walpole's government. In conclusion, Pope played the role of literary arm of Opposition and tried to attack the King in order to expose the corrupt political systems of England. Finally, he wanted to form the Tory government by toppling Walpole's government.(Cheju National University)

PTMSP-NaY Zeolite

Vol.24 No.4

The PTMSP[Poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)]-NaY zeolite composite membranes were prepared by adding 0∼50 wt% NaY zeolite to PTMSP. In order to investigate the characteristics of these membranes, we used the analytical meth-ods such as FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, DSC, TGA, and SEM. Gas permeation experiments were carried out at 23∼26°C, 2 kgf/cm2, and the permselectivity of H2 and N2 gases through the composite membranes was studied as a function of the NaY zeolite contents. According to TGA measurements, when NaY zeolite was inserted within the PTMSP, thermal stability of PTMSP was enhanced. Based on SEM observation, NaY zeolite was dispersed in the PTMSP-NaY zeolite composite membrane with a size of 1.5 µm. The permeability of H2 and N2 through the PTMSP-NaY zeolite composite membranes in-creased as NaY zeolite content increased. On the contrary, the selectivity(H2/N2) of the PTMSP-NaY zeolite composite membranes decreased as zeolite content increased.

Vol.24 No.1

This essay is designed to view The Hind and the Panther as Dryden's political poem. The poem's immediate occasion was the defence of moderate Catholic position Dryden supported, even though he had regarded the Church of England as the ideal religion in Religio Laici. James II, a Catholic king, succeeded to the throne in 1685; Dryden became a Catholic convert. James proclaimed Declaration for Liberty of Conscience and tried to give freedom of faith to both Catholics and Nonconformists. Radical Catholics supported the King's hasty decision, while moderate Catholics didn't support it because it would attract unfavorable reaction from the nation at large. With this poem Dryden tries to find a solution to this difficult religious and political situation that English Catholics are faced with. He hopes to give political counsel to the prince and aim at national reconciliation in the poem by clinging to the two functions of panegyric. The bird fables of the poem's Third Part offer forebodings of the fate which might await theEnglish Catholics in future. The Hind and the Panther each tell a fable. The Hind's fable tells of swallows persuaded to stay beyond the end of summer by a martin, who seems to represent one of James's advisers, Father Petre, and their subsequent suffering when the winter snows return. The winter snows refer to the reign of a Protestant king in future. At this point Dryden gives political counsel to James II that he should work with Anglicans, not Nonconformists. Dryden thinks James II's hasty policy to free Catholics from the restrictions imposed by the Test Act is a political misjudgment, and presents the Anglican-Catholic alliance as the best way. The Hind's fable tells about a farmyard, presided over by “a Plain Good Man” representing James II, into which the pigeons(or Anglicans) invite a buzzard to overawe the poultry(or Roman Catholics). The buzzard stands for William of Orange. In this context this fable seems based on the rumors that William of Orange was then preparing to invade England. The buzzardseems to establish a tyranny that oppresses all of the farmyard. This fable gives political warning to James II by implying that he would be deposed if he did not reconcile with Anglicans. This final fable also seems to emphasize the national reconciliation of the religious sects that the farm lord expects his birds in his farmyard to learn. Inconclusion, Dryden gives political counsel to James II that he should reconsider the rash policies of his advisers, and presents the reconciliation between Catholics and Anglicans as the best way to avoid the political tensions.
