The autoignition and combustion processes of a diesel spray are numerically studied. To simulate the autoignition and the combustion process in a diesel spray, the wave instability breakup model, the Shell ignition model, and the modified eddy breakup model are implemented in the KIVA-Ⅱ code. The coupling mechanism between fluid mechanics and chemical reaction associated with autoignition is discussed in detail. Numerical results indicate that the mixing process along the edges of spray jet has a crucial role for autoignition and combustion process. We also investigate effects of injection pressure and concentration of O₂ and CO₂ on the autoignition process in the diesel/EGR environment.<br/>

The spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment are numerically investigated. In order to evaluate the predictive capability of the high-pressure vaporization model developed in this study, computations are carried out for two diesel-like test conditions. Numerical results indicate that the present high-pressure vaporization model reasonably well predicts the basic features of the high-pressure evaporating spray dynamics.<br/>

Monolithic three-way catalysts were aged with different mileages on an engine dynamometer. These catalysts were subsequently evaluated on an engine dynamometer to examine the effects of air/fuel ratio set point, temperature, and air/fuel ratio amplitude and frequency on the conversion efficiencies for NOx, CO, and HC. For this test, dual oxygen sensor method, which utilizes a comparison. between an upstream oxygen sensor and oxygen sensor placed downstream of the catalyst. is used under steady state operating conditions. It is found that the amplitude and frequency of air/fuel ratio closed-loop control system affects the NOx. CO, and HC conversion efficiencies greatly. In this study, a new parameter which can be used as a measure of catalyst performance is proposed, and it is found that this parameter qualitatively matches well with the HC conversion efficiency of catalyst.<br/>

In order to improve soil quality of mountainous highland in Gangwon province, green manure cultivation is necessary rather than continuous cultivation of the same crops. One of the difficulties to grow green manure in the region is increase in soil hardness in spring after wintering of rye, the current major green manure. The objectives of the study were to select proper green manure plants suitable to environment of mountainous highland and to compare the application effect of the green manure with rye. Hairy vetch, wheat, and rye showed relatively high survival rate (greater than 35%) and plant height (greater than 45 cm) after winter compared with the other seven green manures. Rye and wheat increased soil penetration resistance to 2.7 and 3.0 MPa, respectively. Although yields of hairy vetch and wheat were less than that of rye, greater contents of nitrogen and calcium for the two green manures than the contents of rye indicated comparable nutrient supply to the following crops. The application effects of hairy vetch and wheat on soil chemical characteristics and Chinese cabbage yield were not significantly different from those of rye. The results obtained in the study implied that hairy vetch and wheat could substitute rye as a green manure for mountainous highland in Gangwon province.

The low NOx burner, 800㎾ thermal capacity, using light oil is designed and tested to investigate the effects of burner operating parameters on the flame and NOx emission characteristics. The burner is designed to be simultaneously staged by air and fuel. This type of burner has a advantage in NOx reduction. As the fuel rich and lean zone are obviously separated, the thermal hot spots are almost diminished, so that the formation of thermal NOx is restrained.
