The samples of the used direct-bonded magnesia-chrome refractories of a VOD were made into thin sections for the optical and electron microscopic investigations to characterize the failure mechanisms of the lining in the stainless steelmaking conditions. In addition to the extremely hostile conditions imposed on the VOD refractory bricks, the lack of a retardation mechanism of the slag penetration makes them exceptionally more vulnerable compared with those of the carbon-containing MgO-based bricks of LD converters and EAFs. The study on the brick samples using optical microscope, EPMA, X-ray diffraction and EDAX has shown: 1. In the early stage of the process, the matrix of Mag-Chrome brick consisting mainly of MgO fines with M₂ S and CMS bonds is attacked by the low basicity slag and the lime added as a flux, forming low-melting silicates such as CMS and C₃ MS₂ . 2. The alumina foamed as a result of the addition of aluminum to reduce Cr₂ O₃ to Cr is responsible for the formation of no less detrimental low-melting aluminates such as C₄AF, CAS₂, etc. in the later stage.
Effects of Cilostazol on the Drug-Eluting Stent in Native Coronary Arteries

Background and Objectives:Cilostazol is an antiplatelet drug with antiproliferative properties when administered after coronary bare metal stent implantation. However, its effect on clinical and angiographic outcomes after sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation in native coronary arteries has not been established. Subjects and Methods:Two hundred patients who had undergone successful SES implantation were randomly assigned to receive, in addition to aspirin, 75 mg clopidogrel daily or 100 mg cilostazol twice daily after one month of triple oral therapy (aspirin, clopidogrel, and cilostazol). The medications were continued until the follow-up coronary angiography, which was performed after six months. Results:There were no significant differences in the minimal luminal diameters before and immediately after the coronary intervention, and at the follow-up angiography. The late loss of minimal luminal diameter was 0.26±0.40 mm in the cilostazol group and 0.28±0.41 mm in the clopidogrel group (p=0.773). Other quantitative coronary angiography variables were also similar in the two groups. Restenosis, determined by quantitative coronary angiography at six months and defined as ≥30% narrowing, occurred in 11.4% of the clopidogrel group and 8.7% of the cilostazol group (p=0.478). However, in-stent restenosis was focal (100% vs 23.1% in the clopidogrel group, p<0.001), and shorter in the cilostazol group (6.26±2.42 vs 14.5±6.55 mm, p=0.001). Conclusion:Cilostazol was not inferior to clopidogrel in terms of clinical anti-coagulation effect, and had an antiproliferative effect in native coronary arteries after SES implantation. Co40Fe17Si32B11 thin film (150 nm) was deposited by using an RF magnetron co-sputtering system on a Si (100) substrate. A self-designed substrate holder, including various hard magnets arranged around the sub-strates, was utilized so that various external magnetic fields could be applied to the Si substrates during the film deposition. By the effect of this deposition field, the applied field during the sample deposition, the squareness of the CoFeSiB thin film was significantly enhanced. From the angular analysis of the mag-netic hysteresis curves from easy (parallel to external magnetic field) to hard (perpendicular to external magnetic field) direction of magnetization, it can be deduced that Co and Fe atoms were magnetically arranged to the easy magnetization axis by an external magnetic field which was induced during deposition. Also, the compositional cluster size of the CoFeSiB thin film was remarkably reduced by Zr addition,causing a decrease in the value of coercivity. These results suggest that apparent magnetic anisotropy was achieved, and the soft magnetic property of the CoFeSiB thin film was remarkably enhanced by the com-bination of the deposition field and Zr addition.
