Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subjective sleep problems and various types of traumatic events of patients with depressive disorder. Methods : A total of 411 patients diagnosed with depressive disorders were recruited in this study. The participants filled out Life Time Events Checklist (LEC), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). We used the independent t-test and analysis of covariance to compare each component of PSQI between depressive patients with and without traumatic experiences. Results : The groups of patients who experienced a serious accident at work, home or during recreational activity, sexual assault, other unwanted or uncomfortable sexual experience, life-threatening illness or injury, and sudden, unexpected death of a near and dear one showed lower scores in a few components of PSQI. Sleep disturbance was a common problem in all five groups. Lower subjective sleep quality and longer sleep latency was observed in three groups. There were no differences in the other components of PSQI among groups. Conclusion : This study showed that various types of traumatic events may have different effects on subjective sleep quality as a consequence of the traumatic event which they had experienced.

The effects of extracts from Lentinula edodes (L. edodes) and Aquilariae agallocha (A. agallocha) on the DNA damage response in ultraviolet A (UVA)-exposed HaCaT cells and on the allergic contact dermatitis caused by 2,4-dinitro-chlorobezene (DNCB) were investigated. When UVA-exposed cells were incubated for 24 hours in medium containing L. edodes or A. agallocha extract, the level of 8-OHdG and CPD decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. The combined treatment with both extracts potentiated the decrease in UVA-induced 8-OHdG and CPD levels as compared with those following treatment with a single extract. In addition, the two extracts showed preventive effects against the UVA-induced reduction in collagen levels. Furthermore, the blood levels of IgE, IL-6, and histamine decreased more significantly upon combined treatment with L. edodes and A. agallocha extracts as compared with those following treatment with single extracts in DNCB-induced allergic contact dermatitis in the ICR mouse. The results of the present study suggest that the components with in the extracts of L. edodes and A. agallocha can help to prevent of UVA-induced genomic instability via a decrease in DNA damage, and to decrease the DNCB-induced allergic dermatitis via modulation of relevant proteins including IgE and IL-6. Further study is needed to clarify the purified components related to the preventative effects of the two extracts against UVA- or DNCB-induced genomic damage.

The periodical, 『Hyeondae』, was created by Tokyo Chosun YMCA. The birth of this periodical had very close connections with the social trend during that time. After the February 8th Independence Declaration, the Korean students studying in Tokyo focused their attention more on society, and the relationship between individuals and society. Tokyo Chosun YMCA published their periodical, 『Gidokcheongnyeon』, from November 1917 to December 1919, which mainly claimed individuals should train mentally and physically. However, when publishing 『Hyeondae』 in January 1920, they started insisting that one should sacrifice themselves for society. Seungman Choi was in charge of editing 『Hyeondae』 and he began defining the meaning of ‘society’ more abstractly. According to him, society stood for emotion such as sympathy or compassion based on love. It was translated into the word ‘Lin’ which means social aid. Society was considered to be a massive community beyond a nation or ethnic group. Individual people were considered to be cosmopolites rather than citizens who belonged to one country. In every issue, Heeyong Byeon wrote his article about ‘socialism’ based on Marxism. He believed a labor problem was all human society`s problem. He stressed that there should be mutual help even between the capitalist class and the proletarian class, so-called sympathetic socialism. It`s a well-known fact that socialism was widespread during that time and we can see early socialists such as Heeyong Byeon through 『Hyeondae』. Based on their own interest, Seungman Choi focused more on ‘society’ and Heeyong Byeon on ‘socialism’. However, there was no big difference distinguishing between their views on society. For them, society transcended a nation. It was a massive social community based on mutual aid between all mankind and classes. Both Seungman Choi and Heeyong Byeon were members of <Yeomyeonghoe>, which was created by the Japanese democracy theorist, Yosino Sakujo, and they were influenced by Taisho democracy. At the time, many ‘-isms’ were derived from democracy. Many thoughts were studied and existed at the same time and later offshoots were created. 『Hyeondae』is a good example which reflected the needs of the time.

Bottom-up approaches to control of Microcystis aeruginosa blooms were comparatively investigated through an in situ mesocosm experiment using aquatic plants (Iris pseudoacorus). In the mesocosm experiments, floating I. pseudoacorus, seemed to be effective in controlling massive M. aeruginosa blooms in an agricultural reservoir, exhibiting a close coupling with temporal variations in Chl-a and DO concentration. Shading by floating I. pseudoacorus resulted in a reduced phytoplankton abundance inhibiting light energy availability. Moreover, I. pseudoacorus may suppress phytoplankton growth through the excretion of chemical substances, likes a allelopathy, that inhibit phytoplankton photosynthetic activity The 15N atom % of I. pseudoacorus showed higher values than POM, suggesting that I. pseudoacorus assimilates DIN predominantly compared to phytoplankton, which was mostly M. aeruginosa. This result strongly suggests that the M. aeruginosa bloom should be regulated by aquatic plants, like I. pseudoacorus, this approach can affect zooplankton composition. This is the first study that has used stable isotope tracers to evaluate the biomanipulation efficiency through floating I. pseudoacorus.

Organic carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) were determined at 7 stations (6 stations in Han river and Paldang dam outflow station) from May to October 2013, in order to understand the origin of POM at the Han river. δ13C values of POM in four stations showed significant seasonal changes season, but δ15N values were enriched in around Kyeongan stream (K). POC, PN and Chl-a concentration showed a similar seasonal pattern in Kyeongan stream, with an apparent decrease from July to August. POC and PN concentration has a higher correlation with Chl-a concentration in Kyeongan stream (K). δ13C and δ15N values of POM has a lighter value during lower Chl-a concentration peroid, compared to other seasons. Our results revealed that Kyeongan stream (K) seemed to be influenced by substantial amount of organic manure or fertilizer input in 2013, compared to the previous year (2012). These results suggest that the analysis of stable isotope ratios is a simple but useful tool for the identification of organic matter origin in aquatic environments

Nitrogen (N) loading from domestic, agricultural and industrial sources can lead to excessive growth of macrophytes or phytoplankton in aquatic environment. Many studies have used nitrogen stable isotope ratios to identify anthropogenic nitrogen in aquatic systems as a useful method for studying nitrogen cycle. In this study to evaluate the precision and accuracy of Kjeldahl processes, two reference materials (IAEA-NO-3, N-1) were analyzed repeatedly. Measured the δ15N-NO3 and δ15N-NH4 values of IAEA-NO-3 and IAEA-N-1 were 4.7±0.2‰ and 0.4±0.3‰, respectively, which are within recommended values of analytical uncertainties. Also, we investigated spatial patterns of δ15N-NO3 and δ15N-NH4 in effluent plumes from a waste water treatment plant in Han River, Korea. δ15N-NO3 and δ15N-NH4 values are enriched at downstream areas of water treatment plant suggesting that dissolved nitrogen in effluent plumes should be one of the main N sources in those areas. The current study clarifies the reliability of Kjeldahl analytical method and the usefulness of stable isotopic techniques to trace the contamination source of dissolved nitrogen such as nitrate and ammonia.

This review paper was written to provide background information as well as future application for aquatic ecologists interested in using stable isotope. table isotope techniques has proved to be an extremely useful to elucidate a ot of environmental and ecological problems. Stable isotopes have been used as possible tracers to identify sources, to quantify relative inputs in a system. When utilized carefully, stable isotope tools provides apparent advantages for the scientists to find out the processes of material cycles in various nvironments and energy flows in natural ecosystems.
강우기 후 신구 농업용 저수지 먹이망에 미치는 외부기원 유기물의 영향 -안정동위원소비 활용-

The origin of particulate organic matter (POM) and food web structure were investigated in Shingu reservoir based on stable isotope analysis from pre-monsoon (July) to post-monsoon (September) 2007. According to the depth in Shingu reservoir, the 13C and 15N values of POM for pre-monsoon period were nonsignificant distinction, while it was significant variation after rainfall period. The δ13C values of POM in premonsoon period ranged from -25.1‰ to -26.1‰ in whole water column, but the δ13C values of POM in post-monsoon period showed relatively wide range between -23.2‰ and -27.5‰. The apparently lighter values (average -27.5‰) in near bottom water (7 m water depth) demonstrate that POM in high turbid water in post-monsoon period may be derived from the outside terrestrial plants (allochthonous) through heavy rainfall during the summer monsoon period. After rainfall period, 13C and 15N values of D. brachyurum showed -23.3‰ and 12.2‰, respectively, while B. longirostris showed -27.1% and 8.7%, respectively. It suggested that D. brachyurum mainly feed on POM in autochthonous organic matter pool, but B. longirostris mainly consumed POM in allochthonous organic matter pool after rainfall period. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were markedly different among secondary consumers. The carp (C. carpio) and catfish (S. asotus) were in the higher trophic level and crucian carp (C. auratus) and mudfish (M. mizolepis) were in the lower trophic level. 13C and 15N values of Z. platypus didn’t significantly changed between before and after rainfall period. But P. parva and C. auratus apparently changed the 13C and 15N values after rainfall period. It is suggested that P. parva and C. auratus seem to feed allochthonous food source while Z. platypus depend on autochthonous food source.

In this study, we introduce the method for measuring <sup>15</sup>N-NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> using an ammonium diffusion technique. The advantage of this method is that it is broadly applicable to all types of water and it allows measurements in samples with lower ammonium concentrations than has previously been possible. The NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> is converted to NH<sub>3</sub> with pH〈11 condition and then it is trapped in a filter package with ammonium sulfate. During different incubation time of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12 and 14 days, measured <sup>15</sup>N-NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup> values of samples reacted after 7 days yielded the most consistent results with certified values. To evaluate a success of the method developed in this study, two international standards, IAEA-N1 (δ<sup>15</sup>N = +0.4‰) and IAEA-N2 (δ<sup>15</sup>N = +20.3‰) were used. Measured their δ<sup>15</sup>N values were +0.4 ± 0.3‰ (n=10) for IAEA-N1 and +20.3 ± 0.2‰ (n=10) for IAEA-N2, respectively, in excellent agreement with recommended values within the error. The method developed in this study will be useful tool for the identification of nitrogen source in aquatic ecosystem.
