Effects of acupuncture at Sanyinjiao(SP6) and Yanglingquan(GB34) on bone mineral sensity(BMD) was investigated in ovariectomized(OVX) rats. BMD of OVX rats was measured left femur and tibia 2 and 4 weeks after acupuncture stimulation, respectively. Compared with sham-operated rats, a significant decrease in spine, pelvic and left femoral and tibial BMD was observed 2 and 4 weeks after OVX, respectively. In contrast, a significant increase of spinal, pelvic and left femoral and tibial BMD was elicited 2 and/or 4 weeks after acupuncture stimulation, respectively. These results show the possibility that acupuncture can play a role of ameliorating osteoporosis by elevating serum levels of female hormones related with bone metabolism.
증례(證例) : 한방차의 여성 생리통 완화에 대한 임상체험 평가

Objective: The object of this study was to investigate the efficacy of oriental herb tea in women with dysmenorrhea. Methods: 52 women with dysmenorrhea drank oriental herb tea twice daily for 1 month. The premenstrual symptoms and degree, VAS (Visual Analog Scale) and MVRS (Multidismensional Verbal Rating Scale) of dysmenorrhea was evaluated before and after treatment. And the Affinity of the product was investigated. Results: After treatment, premenstrual mood disorder, degree and duration time of dysmenorrhea and disorder of daily living and sleeping was reduced. And repurchase opinion of the product was 60.4%. Conclusion: These result suggest that drinking oriental herb tea is useful for improvement dysmenorrhea. Also it is needed the various attempts to change formulation, as well as development of herbal tea using medicinal herbs for reducing dysmenorrhea.

Effects of safflower seeds water extract on bone mineral density(BMD) was investigated in ovariectomy- induced postmenopausal osteoporotic rats. BMD of spine, relvis, right femur and tibia were measured in ovariectomized(OVX) rats treated with safflower seeds water extract(1250㎎/㎏ BW) or placebo for 4 weeks. Ovariectomy caused a significant decrease in spinal, right femoral and tibial BMD after 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. Compared with OVX rats, safflower seeds water extract(1250㎎/㎏ BW) caused significant increase in spinal, pelvic, right femoral and tibial BMD at 2 and 4 weeks after treatment, respectively. These findings suggest a possible protective effect of safflower seeds water extract(1250㎎/㎏ BW) against bone loss in OVX rats, associated with increase in serum estradiol level.

Objectives : Plantaginis asiaticae Folium (PA) has been widely used in Korean medicine for treatment of liver disease, stomach troubles and inflammation. We investigated the effect of PA on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 according to extraction conditions. Methods : The MTT assay was employed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of PA extracted by different solvents (water, 50% ethanol, and 95% ethanol) on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Oil red O staining was used to identify intracellular lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1. 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated with PA at concentration ranging in 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 ㎎/㎖. PA was extracted by different extraction conditions such as extraction solvents, extraction time, and extraction temperature. In addition, UPLC analysis was used for determination of candidates of active ingredients in PA. Results : 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were treated with PA extracted by different solvents (water, 50% ethanol, and 95% ethanol) and there was no cytotoxicity. Oil red O staining was employed to identify the effect of PA on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1. In the present study, PA water extraction at 70℃ for 6 hours decreased greatly in lipid accumulation. The range of concentrations was 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 ㎎/㎖. Concentration at 0.2 ㎎/㎖ was the most effective one among them. Candidates of active ingredients in PA were shown plantamajoside and acteoside through UPLC. Conclusions : These results suggest that the effect of PA water extraction at 70℃ on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 is superior to other extraction conditions. We suppose that plantamajoside and acteoside may be candidates of active ingredients in PA.

Objectives : Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) were well known as anti-oxidant, but they were limited to use because of toxicity. So, many studies are being done to develope natural anti-oxidant. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents along with total antioxidant capacity of the ethanolic extract of Plantaginis Herba (PH) were evaluated to explore the reliable and potential sources of novel natural antioxidants. Methods : Total polyphenol contents and total flavonoid contents in PH ethanol extract were determined by colorimetric method. And DPPH(1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS(2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Surfonicacid)) free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power inhibition activities of PH ethanol extract were measured at 100, 500, 1000, 5000 ㎍/㎖ concentrations by spectrometric assay. Results : The total polyphenol contents and total flavonoid contents of the extract were 161.99 ㎎/g, 144.05 ㎎/g, respectively. Also, DPPH, ABTS free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power of PH ethanol extract in treated concentrations (100, 500, 1000, 5000 ㎍/㎖) increased dose dependently. In particular, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity of PH ethanol extract from 500 ㎍/㎖ was significantly increased compared to positive control (BHA). ABTS free radical scavenging capacity of PH ethanol extract from 1000 ㎍/㎖ was significantly higher than BHA. Also, reducing power showed that PH ethanol extract from 500 ㎍/㎖ was significantly increased compared to BHA. Conclusions : These results suggest that PH ethanol extract has effects to scavenge free radicals, thus PH has potential and applicable benefits for development of materials and products to have anti-oxidation functions.
송진 유래 abietic acid가 전립선 비대증 모델 rat에 미치는 영향

Objectives : Currently, the benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common urogenital disorder in old men. We were performed to determine the effects of abietic acid (AC), component of pine resin, in benign prostatic hyperplastic Sprague-Dawley rat (SD rat) induced by testosterone injection (IP). Methods : We monitored body weights in SD rat at start and end date of experiment. After end of experiment, the prostate weights were measured in SD rats. Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) levels was performed in serum. And we determined the 5-alpha reductase Ⅱ activity, testosterone levels, and dihydrotestosterone levels in prostate tissue and serum using ELISA kit. Results : As results, the prostate wights were increased in BPH group compared to normal group and were decreased in fina, AC30, and AC 50 groups, respectively. Serum GOT levels were decreased in AC50 group compared to BPH group. And Serum GPT levels of AC30 and AC50 groups were lower than BPH group. In addition, the 5-alpha reductase Ⅱ activity, testosterone levels, and dihydrotestosterone levels were decreased the fina, AC10, AC30, and AC 50 groups contrast to the BPH group. Furthermore, 5-alpha reductase Ⅱ activity, testosterone levels, and dihydrotestosterone levels were decreased dose dependent in AC groups compared to BPH group. Conclusion : These results suggest that AC could be used as a potential material for the treatment of BPH by decreasing the androgen levels in benign prostatic hyperplasia model rats.
