We analyze stochastically the optimal operation of a service process with a human worker where his or her service rate deteriorates over work period based on queueing models. The worker has multiple states and state?dependent service rates. Stress occurs stochastically and deteriorates the worker`s state gradually. The worker takes a rest if its state reaches a threshold and return refreshed. We present a procedure for calculating the rate of meeting a deadline, the evaluation criteria for a rest policy in this paper. Satisfying deadline is critical to improve service quality. We propose estimation methods for the parameters related to system deterioration such as stress occurrence rate, the number of states, and state?dependent service rates. We show numerical examples and analyze the characteristics of the optimal rest policy.
