The migration characteristics of radionuclide in the mixed beds of fly ash and clay were studied to investigate the applicability of fly ash as backfill material in radioactive waste repositories. In this study, the back to back diffusion method was employed in the investigation of the diffusion phenomena of Sr-90. The experimental data showed that the migration of cation took place through pore diffusion in the bed of fly ash, whereas in the bed of clay, it occurred through surface diffusion. Therefore, the diffusivities of cation in the mixed beds of fly ash and clay were calculated in terms of the migration characteristics of each material. The results indicated that the diffusivity of Sr-90 varied from 4.33×10^(-12) to 2.06×10^(-11) ㎡/s in the mixed beds of fly ash and clay in which the fly ash content was in the range of 20 to 100 wt%. Thus, the mixed bed of fly ash and clay was found superior to the clay bed as a backfill material in radioactive waste repositories.

PVC is one of the common thermoplastic polymers well mixed up with other plasticizer, stabilizer, and additive agent. It is also a highly energy efficient material widely used in many industries related with vehicles, accessories, furniture, packaging, pipes, wallpaper, wire coating, and so on. Since it has been reported that VCM, the raw material of PVC, could be related with high of bio-carcinogenicity in human, however, the level of residual VCM not only in the polymer resins but also in the environment have been regulated in many countries. There are several testing methods for the determination of residual VCM in the polymer resins as well as environment samples, including those by ISO, ASTM, EPA, KS, and other governmental guidelines. However, it is still difficult to measure residual VCM because of its high vapor pressure. No suitable commercial reference material for VCM is another problem. To establish and develop more reliable test method for residual VCM, this paper introduces several typical standard methods for residual VCM testing in Korea and other countries.

There are two kinds of hub mechanism on the controllable pitch propeller. One is the collar type and the other is the trunnion type. Pitch variation mechanism of the collar type of CPP is a simpler and cheaper solution, therefore CPP of this type is more applicable for commercial vessels. But the trunnion type of CPP has many advantages compared to the collar type of CPP : There are an ability to install up to 7 blades and a smaller dependency from bolt properties. The blades arrangement of trunnion type does not need bolts and it has a smaller disk factors for the same number of blades compared with the collar type CPP. In this instance, the CPP of trunnion type is an appropriate fit for the naval purposes(explosive shock) and ice breakers.

Various fabrication methods have been used to synthesize sapphire which has qualities of jewelry well beyond the industrial class. Among them, the flux sapphire of Chatham Company which has as high value as jewelry was selected in order to compare natural and synthetic sapphire. First, the WD-XRF (Wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer) was used to analyze the chemical composition of natural and synthetic sapphire. Although natural sapphire had very diverse chemical compositions, flux sapphire had small quantities of Mo, Pt and Pb elements in addition to the similar chemical ingredients to natural one. Pt is decisive proof of flux sapphire. Next, by investigating spectroscopic characteristics using UV-VIS Spectrophotometer after heat treatment at high temperatures of $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$, the variation of 690 nm absorbance related to $Cr^{3+}$ was detected in the natural sapphire while those of the 690 nm absorbance (related to $Cr^{3+}$) as well as absorbance of 376 nm and 388 nm ($Fe^{3+}$) were seen in the flux sapphire. It was found that the difference in the absorbance variation of flux sapphire is greater than that of natural sapphire after heat treatment. The chemical composition and spectrum analysis were utilized to compare the natural sapphire and the flux synthetic sapphire.
