Prosthetic biomaterials are required to be non-toxic, non-thrombogenic, and non-immunogenic. Bacterial cellulose (BC) synthesized by Gluconacetobacter xylinus has recently been studied as a biocompatible material due to its unique features such as high purity, crystallinity, biodegradability, and tensile strength as compared to plant cellulose. Although BC has high potential to be used as biomaterial, its toxicity and immunoreactivity have not been properly studied yet. In this report, we investigated the immunoreactivity of BC in vitro in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and in vivo using BALB/c mice. We report that BC does not induce apoptosis and necrosis in HUVECs and does not stimulate immune response in both HUVECs and BALB/c mice models. These results suggest that BC may be widely used as a biocompatible biomaterial for tissue engineering and biosensors.

Coronavirus, known as one of the causes of colds including mild upper respiratory tract disease in humans, has mutated into the infectious severe disease, COVID-19 through SARS and MERS. The mortality and symptoms of COVID-19 are related to the ability to regulate innate immunity, which acts as the first barrier against microorganisms and viruses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for food that helps to strengthen immunity is rapidly increasing. Functional foods promote general health and alleviate the risk of disease symptoms by activating multiple biological functions. A recent, there is an interest in discovering functional substances that can induce enhancement of immunity and prevent viral infection as well as relieve disease symptoms. Therefore, this article focus to understand the concept of immune response and highlights the recent status of functional foods and research trends that can help prevent and treat viral infections by inducing the enhancement of immune function.
Comparative mRNA and microRNA expression profiling of methylglyoxal-exposed human endothelial cells

Methylglyoxal (MG) is a highly toxic compound that contributes to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). MG is detected at high concentration in plasma of diabetic patients and is involved in the pathogenesis of several diabetic macro- and microvascular complications, such as atherosclerosis,retinopathy, nephropathy and hypertension. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in the negative regulation of genes in many biologic processes. They are also known to post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression involved in cellular responses to toxicants. In this study, we investigated whether miRNAs play a role in the regulation of gene expressions in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) after the treatment with MG. We performed pair-wise correlation analysis, acquired altered expression levels of 274 miRNAs and 686 mRNA, and observed their anti-correlations. Genes associated with diabetic vascular disease were sorted from miRNAcorrelated genes, and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis on the differential expression of selected genes was carried out. Our results revealed the relationship between miRNAs and mRNA in MGexposed endothelial cells using the expression profiling.

The technology in the automobile field has steadily developed and the number of registered automobiles has also increased explosively, and automobiles have become an essential part of our daily life. An increase in the penetration rate or frequency of use of automobiles can increase the likelihood of accidents, and automobile fires are also occurring frequently. In the case of automobile fires, 458 cases have occurred in the past three years, accounting for 12.3% of the total 3,716 fires in Daegu, and about 50% of them occur inside the engine room of a car while driving or parked. In this study, we conduct various experiments on the starter motor, which is a device that uses a large current, among various causes that occur in the engine room of a car, and prove the electrical singularity and fire potential to identify the exact cause of the fire and suggest countermeasures against the car fire.
Alteration of Gene Expression Profile by Melatonin in Endothelial Cells

Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland and gastrointestinal tract and plays a role in circadian rhythm synchronization. Melatonin is also reported to have various physiological effects on endothelial cells. Endothelial cells are responsible for physiologic homeostasis and maintaining blood vessel permeability in vivo. In this study, using gene expression profiling, we confirmed about 151 up-regulation and 1,023 downregulation expression genes, with an expression level difference of ¤1.5-fold, after exposure to 100 μM and 1 mM melatonin concentrations in endothelial cells. The genes were classified into 16 functional groups based on their functions, including cell adhesion, immune response, lipid metabolism, and response to stress. We analyzed the gene expression profiling data of melatonin- treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs), which indicated a broad spectrum of physiological functions, including anti-oxidative/anti-inflammatory effects and cell-to-cell junction maintenancerelated genes.
오픈소스 소프트웨어 활성화를 위한 성숙도 및 적용성 평가 모델(OSMAAM)의 설계 및 구현에 관한 연구

본 연구는 오픈소스 소프트웨어(OSS, Open Source Software)의 실질적인 활용을 증대시키기 위해 성숙도뿐 아니라 적용성까지 평가하는 모델과 구현 방법을 제시한다. 이 모델은 기존 모델에서 평가될 수 없었던 적용성을 측정하기 때문에, OSS를 신규 도입하거나, 상용 소프트웨어를 OSS로 대체, 또는 OSS를 상용 소프트웨어와 비교 시 활용할 수 있도록 사용자들을 지원한다. 이 모델의 설계 및 구현을 위해 7단계의 방법론을 제시하였고, 설문을 실시하여 모델의 타당성과 신뢰성을 검증하였다. 또한, 이 방법론을 기반으로 인프라 부분에서 OSS에 대한 성숙도와 적용성을 평가하는 실제적인 예를 제공함으로써 이 모델의 실용성을 입증하였다. 향후 일반 사용자뿐만 아니라 정보화 담당자들까지도 산업적인 적용을 위해 최적의 OSS를 이 모델을 활용하여 선정할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과가 OSS 활성화 정책에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다. This study presents a model and its implementation methodology assessing not only maturity but also applicability in order to increase the practical usage of open source software(OSS). Since this model measures applicability which can not be assessed by the previous models, it is able to support users in many ways when they introduce OSS for the first time, replace commercial software with OSS, and compare OSS with commercial software. For the purpose of design and implementation of this model, we presented a methodology with 7 phases and conducted a survey to evaluate the appropriateness and reliability of the model. In addition, we proved the practical usability of the model by providing a practical example assessing maturity and applicability of OSS in the area of the infra category on the basis of the methodology. In the future, not only general users but also officers in charge of informatization will be able to select optimal OSS by using this model for industrial application. Therefore, the result of this research is expected to greatly contribute to OSS promotion policy.
