The effect of Ni-content(8.3∼12 wt%) on the tensile properties and work hardening behavior between 20℃ and -196℃, formability and weldability was studied on Type 304 stainless steel used for the membrane of LNG storage tank. At room temperature, the hardening and ductility indices (such as tensile strength, strain hardening exponent and elongation) were increased and formability was improved by decreasing the Ni-content. When the Ni-content is less than 10 wt.%, lower yield point is observed at temperatures lower than -60℃. It is due to the dynamic strain softening or transformation plasticity, which accompanies the rapid increase in the amount of strain induced martensite(α') at low strains. Dynamic strain softening or transformation plasticity is not observed when only E-martensitic transformation occurs at low strains. Regardless of the Ni-content in the Type 304 stainless steel, no cracks were observed during the fabrication of the LNG storage tank membrane since the stain level of the maximum deformed area was the half of forming limit curve. During the gas-tungsten-arc welding, the variation of Ni-content did not affect the penetration characteristics of the Type 304 stainless steel.

The microstructure and texture evolution of Fe-16%Cr ferritic stainless steel has been studied with the variation of annealing process. Interrelation between ridging phenomenon and microtexture was investigated. The annealing process was conducted in 4 different types, such as B-C, B-B, C-C and C-B. (B: batch annealing, C: continuous annealing) in both hot band and cold rolled steels. The rolling and recrystallization textures at each process were examined by orientation distribution function(ODF). In order to investigate the orientation of each grain and the existence of grain colonies, microtexture measurements were performed with electron back-scatter diffraction(EBSD) on the TD section. The ridging behavior was surveyed after 15% tensile elongation. It was found that the ridging property was improved remarkably in C-B annealing process due to the disintegration of coarse colonies after full recrystallization. It was clearly found that the ridging phenomenon was closely related with the existence of grain clusters or grain colonies having the {001}$lt;110$gt; orientation.

Tensile tests are used to clarify the basic mechanical properties of tested specimens and the obtained stress-strain relation gives important information for plastic flow under metal forming processes, i.e. formability and anisotropic properties. The specimen size, test procedure and data measurement method are specified under tensile test standards in order to assure reliability of the tested data. However, many various tests are performed in industrised, universities and research institutes for their convenience in reality. In this study we performed tensile tests according to the different test method and compared their results. These finding will contribute the understanding of each test method.
