This study examines Korean language learners’ performance and strategies when writing translated and direct essays. Forty subjects who have various language and cultural background-China, Japan, Mongol, Vietnam participated in this study. Participants answered strategy questionnaires created by Cohen & Brooks-Carson (2001) and wrote three different essays (an L1 essay, translated essay and direct essay). Linguistic data were measured by various methods (written discourse, error analysis, MLU-m and MLU-w, etc) Research findings are as follows. Participants build more complex structures when writing translated essays than direct essays. Participants show slightly higher numbers of MLU-m and MLU-w with translated essays than direct essays. There exists meaningful differences when utilizing certain writing strategies between advanced levels and non-advanced level learners. (SookMyung Women’s University)

외국어 교육 분야에서는 오랜 기간 동안 다양한 이론과 현장 적용 실험 연구를 토대로 다양한 언어 교수이론을 발표해왔다. 한국어 교육계에서는 1980년대나 되어서야 외국의 교수법에 대한 소개가 몇몇 논문을 토대로 알려지기 시작했다. 단기간 내 수많은 언어 교수 이론들이 국내에 소개되기 시작하였고 부분적으로 한국어 교수법으로 응용, 전환되어 받아들여지기 시작하였다. 본고에서는 발표되어 온 외국의 교수 이론에 대한 소개와 함께 한국어 교수법에 어떻게 전환되고 응용될 수 있는지에 대해 다양한 각도에서 논의해 보고자 한다. 언어교수법 중 문법번역식교수법, 청화식교수법, 침묵식교수법, 전신 반응교수법, 다중지능접근법, 직접식교수법, 협동학습법, 총체적접근법, 내용중심접근법과 의사소통접근법 등에 대한 소개와 더불어 한국어 교수법으로서도 접목 및 응용이 가능한지 등에 대해 분석해보고자 한다. 외국어 교수이론을 무분별하게 수용하기보다 표준적이고 독자적인 한국어 교수 학습 모형이 개발되어야 한다는 점은 학계와 현장에 있는 모든 한국어 교사들이 절실히 느끼는 과제이다. 언어 교수법과 교재 개발, 교과 과정은 상호 보완적으로 밀접한 관계를 이루고 있다. 다양한 학습자 변인에 대한 연구와 특수 목적 한국어 교육을 위한 세분화된 교수법 개발, 효율적으로 교수법이 실행되기 위한 교과 과정 개발 등에 대한 문헌 및 실험 연구들이 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다. This study examines various kinds of language teaching methodology and material development. Various kinds of language teaching methodology which introduced at foreign language education area. Around 1980, these various kinds of teaching methodology begin to introduce and influence to Korean language education area. Some of them worked efficiently while others did not. This study explains various kinds of teaching method or approaches like grammar translation method, audiolingual method, the silent way, total physical response, the direct method, content based instruction, community language learning, Multiple intelligence, whole approach and communicative language teaching. This study examines the applicability for Korean language teaching area with a critical point of view.
