It is an undeniable that cultural landscape of Korea is centered in Seoul, where all the cultural powers are oriented. From this aspect, a municipal theatre of Daegu (Daegu Municipal Theatre), where is considered an area somewhat isolated from the perspective of culture, has managed to develop theoretical programs serving public purposes through efforts on the diversification of performance programs, development of creative plays, acceptance of open direction, classic, modern and experimental plays, foreign exchange, musicals and non-verbal, development of modern and post-modern history of the region, aggressive exploration of subjects, and characterization of the theater through citizen-participated programs and communication with citizens. With such efforts on diversification of public benefits and communality conforming to its purpose, it has been recognized for its contribution to the recovery of popularity of performance art and plays in Daegu. The Daegu Municipal Theatre, celebrating the 20th anniversary of establishment this year and having Choi Ju-Hwan as its fifth art director, has managed to conduct various experimental attempts to gain popularity and these include the exploration of the region and its historical figures, development and promotion of creative musicals, and promotion of communication between citizens and performance culture and of participation of audiences, in turn having a stabilized operation system. Such changes are seemed to be attributable to the maturity of performance production and roles of senior members. From this aspect, this study aims at investigating the changes in the Daegu Municipal Theatre and ‘roles and popularity of national/public theatre companies.

The first theater play of popular local materials is 《Fairy Tale Laundry》(written by Ahn Hee-cheol, 2003) staged as ‘Local Play Series’ of Daegu City Theater Company. As Artist Ahn Hee-cheol staged 《Herb Road》 (2007), a creative musical about ‘‘Daegu Yakjeon Street[1]’, local contents started to be discovered from the artist perspective. With this productive beginning, local story contents were expanded from local history and figures to general Daegu life landscape, citizens’ lives, and modern lives and urban scenery of the city, along with the increase of subjects. Due to the characteristics of performing art theater play, theaters should be an essential condition, and productively developed works should be supported and cultivated, so the creation environment of Daegu faced the second take-off stage as ‘Daemyeong Performance Culture Street, Daegu Foundation for Art & Culture’ was launched. Daegu Foundation for Art & Culture was founded(2009) and its specific operation plan was established. As Kim Soon-gyu, the 1st president, was appointed, various local contents started to be discovered with support and cultivation policy in theater play, performing art, festival, opera, living arts, culture and pure art. Especially in the theater play field, local subjects became diversified productively thanks to <Local Specialized Contents Development> support project. The spotlight came to living scenery, modern local history, figures, modern alley series of Daegu, 2030 generations’ employment and life, and historical figures, and material borrowing became various. Especially, as Shim Jae-chan(2016, the 4th president) was appointed, there was more support in the theater play field. The ‘introduction period’ of local material development can be viewed as the period of local subject series of Daegu City Theater Company(2003), and the ‘take-off stage’ is the establishment of Daegu Foundation for Art & Culture and the establishment of Daegu Musical Festival environment. The ‘development’ period is the establishment of Daemyeong Performance Art Street, the expansion of small theaters,
Vitamin C Stimulates Epidermal Ceramide Production by Regulating Its Metabolic Enzymes

Ceramide is the most abundant lipid in the epidermis and plays a critical role in maintaining epidermal barrier function. Overall ceramide content in keratinocyte increases in parallel with differentiation, which is initiated by supplementation of calcium and/or vitamin C. However, the role of metabolic enzymes responsible for ceramide generation in response to vitamin C is still unclear. Here, we investigated whether vitamin C alters epidermal ceramide content by regulating the expression and/or activity of its metabolic enzymes. When human keratinocytes were grown in 1.2 mM calcium with vitamin C (50 mg/ml) for 11 days, bulk ceramide content significantly increased in conjunction with terminal differentiation of keratinocytes as compared to vehicle controls (1.2 mM calcium alone). Synthesis of the ceramide fractions was enhanced by increased de novo ceramide synthesis pathway via serine palmitoyltransferase and ceramide synthase activations. Moreover, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) hydrolysis pathway by action of S1P phosphatase was also stimulated by vitamin C supplementation, contributing, in part, to enhanced ceramide production. However, activity of sphingomyelinase, a hydrolase enzyme that converts sphingomyelin to ceramide, remained unaltered. Taken together, we demonstrate that vitamin C stimulates ceramide production in keratinocytes by modulating ceramide metabolicrelated enzymes, and as a result, could improve overall epidermal barrier function.
