Background: This study was conducted to develop an effective cultivation technique for Pseudo- lysimachion longifolium using plug trays with different cell sizes and light intensities. Methods and Results: To investigate the growth difference according to the plug tray cell size, nursery soil was filled into trays of 34, 21, and 10 ㎖; to observe growth differences according to light intensity, the intensity was set at 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 µmol·m-2·s-1. Further, to deter- mine differences according to the fertilizer concentration, Peters fertilizer was used at concentra- tions of 0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 ㎎·ℓ-1. The overall growth of P. longifolium did not show statistically significant differences according to the cell size or tray volume. However, based on light intensity, higher shoot height, shoot width, leaf area, and above/below ground biomass were found under 200 µmol·m-2·s-1 intensity; further, based on fertilization level, plant growth was higher in all treatment groups than that in the control group; especially, the highest growth was observed at 2,000 ㎎·ℓ-1. Therefore, seeding P. longifolium in a 10 ㎖ plug tray and cultivating under a light intensity of 200 µmol·m-2·s-1 is considered economically beneficial for the mass pro- duction of superior individuals. Conclusions: Overall, these results can facilitate the development of effective cultivation tech- niques for P. longifolium using plug trays.

Background: The medial plantar nerve (MPN) is a distal branch of the posterior tibial nerve, and various methods of nerve conduction study for MPN have been introduced so far. Hemmi et al described a new method (Hemmi's method) for recording medial plantar sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs), which is considered as a simple and reliable method for measuring medial plantar SNAPs. This study was aimed to establish the normal values for the MPN conduction study among Koreans and to compare the sensitivities of three different methods for MPN conduction study (Hemmi, Oh, and Saeed's method) in detecting evidence of peripheral neuropathy among diabetic patients. Methods: In 27 healthy subjects, MPN conduction study using Hemmi’s method was performed and normal values were calculated. In 54 diabetic patients who showed normal routine nerve conduction studies, three different methods for MPN conduction study were performed and diagnostic sensitivity of each method were compared. Results: In normal subjects, the mean medial plantar SNAP amplitude and conduction velocities measured by Hemmi's method were 4.3±1.0 uV and 38.3±6.8 m/s respectively. Among 54 patients with diabetes who showed normal routine nerve conduction studies, medial plantar SNAP was not obtainable in 28, 31, and 6 patients by Hemmi, Oh and Saeed's method respectively. Conclusions: In terms of the diagnostic sensitivity for detecting diabetic neuropathy, there had been no significant statistical difference between three different methods. Our study suggested that MPN conduction study using Hemmi’s method is simple and useful screening test for early diabetic neuropathy, and is comparable with Oh’s method.

Background and objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of NaCl on the growth, antioxidants (superoxidedismutase, proline), maximum quantum yield, and chlorophyll contents of Pseudolysimachion pusanensis. Methods: Five levels of NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 mM) were used for treatment. Results: The growth according to NaCl concentrations was highest at 50 and 100 mM, but root growth declined before thetop from 200 mM or higher. The increase in NaCl concentrations also led to the increase in SOD and proline contentcompared to the control plot, whereas it decreased chlorophyll content. There was no difference in the maximum quantumyield at 0, 50, 100, and 200 mM, but it decreased at 400 mM. Conclusion: The results proved that P. pusanensis showed an increase in SOD and proline content at 50 and 100 mM ofNaCl treatment compared to the control plot, indicating that it receives salt stress, but the growth was excellent at 50 and100 mM. In addition, there was no difference in top growth up to 200 mM compared to the control plot, and there was nosignificant difference in the maximum quantum yield, which proved that P. pusanensis has strong tolerance to salt stress.

Background and objective: This study was conducted to understand the effect of different quality of light-emitting diodes(LED) on the germination characteristics and growth of Pseudolysimachion nakaianum. Methods: The LED light irradiation was divided into white, red, blue, and red:blue (1:1). To investigate the germinationcharacteristics, 30 seeds were placed in a Petri dish in three replicates for 8 days. Average germination rate, germinationspeed, germination uniformity, and average germination time were measured. To investigate the growth of seedlings, plantheight, plant width, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, fresh weight, dry weight and T/R ratio were examined 6 weeksafter sowing, and chlorophyll fluorescence (maximum quantum yield, electron transport rate) was measured. Results: The final germination rate and germination speed were highest at red:blue (1:1) LED irradiation. Regarding growthand chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, red:blue LED showed the best growth results, with no significant differencein Fv/Fm between different types of light quality, and the electron transport rate was the highest under red:blue LEDirradiation. Also, total fresh/dry weight and T/R ratio were highest for red:blue LED, it is presumed to promote the biomassof entire plant. Conclusion: The results proved that Pseudolysimachion nakaianum showed red LED conditions promoted germination, butcultivation under red:blue LED conditions is judged to be suitable for seedling growth and photosynthesis.
