Plume is recognized as a type of pollution. There have been countless efforts to reduce plume, which is caused by cooling towers. Generally, cooling towers use coil air heaters to reduce plume. The saturated moist air is mixed with the ambient air heated by the coil air heater inside of a cooling tower, and the unsaturated moist air is discharged by the fan. However, a new effective and cheap air heater has been required because the coil air heater does not provide a high enough heat transfer rate, which also has an expensive manufacturing price. A plastic air heater was preferred over coil air heater, but there were few cases that practically applied it in cooling towers. In addition, the air heater could not stop the plume by itself. An air mixer was required to mix saturated moist air and heated ambient air to lower overall relative humidity of the air at the fan exit. The plume prevention test was performed with the cooling tower, which is applied with the dimple type plastic plate air heater and the trench type air mixer.

The plume, which is created from the cooling towers, is the water vapor generated by the heat exchange between the industrial water and the outside air. And as the temperature lowers, the air contains lesser amount of vapor, as a result, the plume becomes more visible. Majority ordinary people however, have negative impression on the plume and consider it as the pollutant because plume come from the factories or power plants . Likewise, the importance of developing an effective plume reduction apparatus is increasing and many researches have been conducting the studies. The Effective reduction of plume is being studied continuously and currently, the most widely used plume reduction method is a series heating method using a fin-coil. However, there are problems such as big volume, high cost, corrosion, in-pipe scale, and the like. To solve this problem, a parallel heating type cooling tower equipped with a plastic air heater has been emerging as a solution and in this research, an experimental study has been demonstrated through attaching a damper to the cooling tower inlet, which improves performance of the cooling tower.
A Numerical Approach to Energy Savings in Heat Drying Process of Drilled and Water-Cleaned PCB

The post-drill cleaning process, one of processes to manufacture Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), can be divided into water cleaning and heat drying processes. The various contaminants occurred during the drilling process are removed in the water cleaning process. The remaining moisture after this process is thoroughly removed by vaporization during the heat drying process. In this paper, the heat drying process of PCBs that have been drilled and water-cleaned prior to drying, is modeled and investigated for a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The Human-Machine Interface (HMI) system configured by using the Ubiquitous Sensor Node (USN) and the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) device is proposed in order to measure interior temperatures of the drying system and to define boundary conditions for the CFD analysis. Currently, six heaters are in operation by workers for the heat drying process as customary. However, it was shown through the experimental measurement and numerical analysis that the heat drying process is possible with operating only 4 heaters. The electrical power consumption of the case where 4 heaters are operated shows 33% of decrease from that of the case where 6 heaters are operated. For a near future study, a structural improvement of the drying system will be proposed with research on parameters that are influential on the performance of the system as one of the measures for a further reduction of electrical power consumption.
